Educating the next generation of workers, scholars and leaders is often a challenging task. Instructors must find new and interesting activities to hold their students’ attention and provide them with the tools they need for their continued success. At South Texas College, faculty members are always coming up with new ways to help facilitate student learning. A select few were recently honored for their exemplary and innovative teaching strategies with STC’s Distinguished Teaching and Learning Awards (DTLA).

DTLA recipients and their respective subject areas are Rachael Freyman Brown, art; Laura De La Vina, developmental English; Elizabeth Dietz, accounting; Isabel Garcia, physical therapy; Betty M. Garner, vocational nursing; Gloria J. Garza, vocational nursing; Grace Little developmental reading; Jose Perez, developmental English; Kelly E. Peterson, criminal justice; Jaime Rodriguez, biology; Reynaldo Sanchez, computer aided drafting and design; Vicente Sauceda, computer aided drafting and design; Elvie Trevino, college success; and Saiyid Fazal Wahid, physics.

“All of these educators were recognized for using creative and effective teaching practices in their classrooms, and for going above and beyond in helping students grasp key concepts they need for their future careers,” said Anahid Petrosian, STC assistant to the vice president of academic affairs. “At STC, we are committed to providing our students with a world-class education, and we couldn’t do this without the tremendous contributions of our instructors. We congratulate all of the award recipients for their outstanding efforts.”

The DLTA recognition program was established to honor full-time or part-time STC faculty members for teaching excellence. In order to reach its decision regarding the nominees, a committee considers several factors including the transferability of the practice to other courses and disciplines; whether the activity motivates and engages students; and whether it addresses specific objectives and different levels of learning and skill development.
