Starr County’s Got Talent 10 Showcase of Champions was a rousing success. The event, hosted by the Starr County Campus Psychology Club at South Texas College was held on Thursday, Dec. 8, 2016, and was completely sold out.
More than 240 people attended, and raised over $900 from admission fees to benefit the annual $1,000 Starr Psych Club Scholarship. The champions from the previous 9 editions of Starr County Got Talent shows were also invited to showcase their talent, and included singers, dancers, dance groups, duets, and musicians.
There were 15 performances from all over Starr County and each participant / group received a certificate of appreciation for their performance. Judges present included Yolanda De La Cruz (TV/Radio Host), Lily Ollervides (TV/Radio Host), Emilio Santos Zermeno (Singer/Owner of Mariachi 7 Leguas), Eduardo Alanis (Singer/Vocalist of Super Odisea), Christian Mata (Radio Host of Digital 101.5 FM) and Santiago Rodriguez (General Manager of Estrella 95.1 FM).
There were a few opening performances from local renowned singers who have participated in national TV reality shows and who have won national championships including La Voz Kids of Telemundo, Clyde Guerra, Jacky Barrera, Alexa Posas, Shanty Zumaya, Francisco Garcia Jr.).
Alex Sarabia, STC Psychological Science Instructor, served as Master of Ceremonies. Both Dr. Arturo Montiel (STC Starr County Campus Administrator) and Ms. Rose Benavidez (STC Board Member) attended and delivered opening remarks.
Alex and Eli Sarabia would like to thank everyone who helped make this talent show a huge success—psychology club members, STC custodial/media staff, DJ Chivo, judges, special performers, participants, and the audience. Also thanks to Roma High School Choir for their rendition of national anthem and the two mariachis who participated, Roma Middle School Mariachi Escandon and Veterans Middle School Mariachi Juvenil de America.
