BAT student Edgar Castillo hopes to become an educator in the future to show others the importance of a college degree.
Going to college is about learning how we fit into the world. It is also a time to learn more about our strengths and how we can use them to contribute to society. As a student at South Texas College, I’ve not only been able to gain the skills and knowledge to enter the workforce, but am getting a glimpse into what the real world has in store for me.
I am currently a student in STC’s Bachelors Program and being at the college has allowed me to follow my dreams, and learn more about myself in the process. These days, technology is part of everything we do. It has become an essential element in life, especially when it comes to communicating and learning. I hope to use all of the skills I acquire to create a successful business.
I also plan to continue my education all the way to the doctoral level and become an educator. I hope to serve as a source of encouragement and support, always reminding students how technology can have a beneficial influence in their lives and how important it is to earn a college degree.
I couldn’t have chosen a better place to start my college career. STC has provided opportunities I never thought possible at a two-year college. I have also had a variety of invaluable learning opportunities, both inside and outside the classroom, that have greatly contributed to my personal growth and development as a future leader. It is a wonderful school offering students a real shot at success. The faculty is very accessible and professional, there are myriad student organizations, and the administration is profoundly committed to improving the community.
The lessons I’ve learned from being involved in student organizations have enhanced my college experience, and opened my eyes to the importance of community service. I am the president of the Pecan Campus Student Government Association and the National Association for Chicana and Chicano Studies, and a member of Students in Free Enterprise, the STC Media Club and Phi Theta Kappa, a national honor society. I am also a graduate of the Student Leadership Academy, which is a group of STC’s most dedicated student ambassadors. All these opportunities allow me to participate in service learning projects, and giving back to the community has been one of the highlights of my academic career.
My biggest dream in life is to be a well-educated person that helps others to challenge their circumstances and change their lives and communities. I have always believed that a person’s legacy is measured by the people they have helped along the way. And it’s what you do with the talents you’ve been granted that really makes the ultimate difference. I know I will make something great out of my life and help contribute to the well-being of the community—the best rewards I can hope for.
What’s something that not too many people know about me? I am the owner and CEO of On the Spot Automotive and Home Solutions. I actually worked in the automotive aftermarket industry in Chicago for 15 years before moving to South Texas. During that time I worked on the vehicles of many professional athletes in Chicago.
What or who inspires me the most? My family, my past and the people I meet inspire me. My mother has been my biggest advocate and she helped me trust in the power of my own ability and place faith in humanity. My faith also guides me and motivates me.
