STC Board of Trustees appoints Paul Rodriguez to District 3 seat

Paul R. Rodriguez was appointed to the vacant District 3 seat by the South Texas College Board of Trustees following a unanimous vote during the Board Meeting held on July 24, 2012 at the college’s Pecan Campus in McAllen. Rodriguez will represent the constituents of South McAllen, Southwest Pharr, Hidalgo, Sharyland, Southeast Mission, and Granjeno.

South Texas College’s Board of Trustees unanimously voted to appoint Paul R. Rodriguez to the vacant District 3 seat during the Board Meeting held on July 24, 2012 at the college’s Pecan Campus in McAllen.

Rodriguez, 58, fills the District 3 seat left vacant by Mike Allen, who passed away in August 2010, and will represent the constituents of South McAllen, Southwest Pharr, Hidalgo, Sharyland, Southeast Mission, and Granjeno.

The District 3 seat was vacant for almost two years, and Rodriguez was one of two finalists from a pool of 13 nominees. The six-member Board of Trustees selected Rodriguez, who is President and CEO of Valley Land Title Company, over Dr. Ofelia Averack, the Executive Director of KAAMDPA Professional Medical Association.

“I take this assignment with some regret because Michael Allen was a tremendous asset to the state, city, and the college, but I am very humbled and flattered that I was selected among the distinguished list of candidates,” Rodriguez said. “I am looking forward to working with my fellow board members, administrators, staff and students at STC to continue the momentum of progress it has made.”

Rodriguez, a graduate of Princeton University in economics, brings over 35 years of financial experience to STC. He also served a nine-year tenure on the Sharyland School Board, and is currently a Director of Valley Alliance of Mentors for Opportunities and Scholarships, President of Affordable Homes of South Texas, Inc., and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Juan Diego Regional Catholic High School in Mission.

“I would like to thank my colleagues for their dedication and commitment while we worked diligently to fill the vacancy created by Mike Allen, an unwavering advocate and friend of South Texas College, whose devotion will not be forgotten,” said STC Board of Trustees Chair Rose Benavidez. “We were fortunate to have a diverse and talented pool to choose from, and the board unanimously agreed that Paul Rodriguez demonstrated wonderful attributes coupled with a wealth of experience, making him the ideal candidate. I am pleased to welcome Paul to our board, and look forward to working closely with him in championing our mission.”

Rodriguez will serve out the remainder of Allen’s term on the board as the District 3 representative that expires in May 2016.
