Deborah Grimaldo says that her time spent at STC has given her a newfound enthusiasm for her studies.
As a mother of three little girls, you could say that I have my work cut out for me. And add a full load of class work to the mix and it gets interesting. Despite the demands of being a full-time mother and student, I juggle it all and now, I am closer than ever before to making my lifelong goals a reality.
I started taking classes at South Texas College in 2008, and my time spent at the college has given me a newfound enthusiasm for my studies and my education. I remember my first day of classes; I was so nervous because I didn’t think that I would ever make it through school, but I soon realized that college life was better than I had ever expected. So far, all of the classes are small enough that every student receives the personalized attention they need to help them master the subject at hand.
It was in one of these classes that I received some of the best advice I have ever been given. An instructor told me that mediocrity is never better and one should always strive to do our best in anything we set out to do. The words rang so true to me that I still keep them in the back of my mind when I feel like giving up. Somehow, they always have a way of motivating me to forge ahead, despite any obstacles in my way.
I am currently in the education program at STC, and I plan to transfer to The University of Texas-Pan American to earn a bachelor’s degree. I hope to become a bilingual teacher, sharing my knowledge with others and helping them reach their academic goals. Ultimately, my biggest dream is to finish college and to be able to say that I completed something I set out to do.
Receiving my degree is the most important thing for me because it will not only allow me to enrich the quality of life that my three daughters and I will enjoy in the future. It will also show them earning an education is very important and that doing well in school does pay off in the end. I want them to know that there are many opportunities out there for them and through leading by example I hope to show them that having a college degree is one of the best lifelong investments a person could ever make.
Why do I think a college degree is important? Earning a degree is very important because it is something that no one can take away from you. It can also bring you many opportunities and new experiences so that you are able to pursue the career of your dreams.
What advice would I offer someone thinking about attending STC? STC is the right choice to start off your college career and you will learn many new things that will help you throughout your entire life.
