Jon Herrin.

By: Jon Herrin, STC developmental English instructor As a developmental English instructor at STC, I have been using my skills teaching on weekends, but not at the college. It is part of service work I perform in Monterrey, Mexico, helping to train and develop bilingual teachers there one weekend a month. My family and I lived and worked for more than three years in Monterrey before coming to the Rio Grande Valley in June 2011 and that’s how I became involved with this work. I love the passion and energy of these student-teachers in Mexico who want so much to do well in their work. And … Read More …

Encouraging others to think about the possibilities of change

STC student Mirenda Jones hopes to become an adoption and family lawyer to help children navigate the foster care system.

It is never too late for change, and the person you were yesterday is not necessary the person you are today. Those simple words of wisdom have inspired me to take the best possible path in my life. And in doing so, I have not only changed my prospects for the future, but I also hope to transform the lives of my community by earning my degree from South Texas College. I grew up in Ontario, Canada, and I dropped out of high school my last semester to open a successful tanning salon. However, realizing the importance of an education, I returned two years later to earn my high school diploma. … Read More …

This semester, a group of 31 STC students, faculty and staff traveled out to Isla Blanca with the purpose to beautify this area. The area is made of huge boulders that outline the coast, in which trash is easily accumulated among the cracks. We had to hop and wedge ourselves down and between the rocks to pull out the trash,” said … Read More …
