Discovering the formula of success

John Montalbo hopes to launch a career in astrophysics to find out more about the physical properties of the universe.

Writer Christopher Hitchens once said that we “must establish our own paths in this most diverse and interesting of conceivable universes—one indifferent to our suffering, and therefore offering us maximum freedom to thrive, or to fail, in our own chosen way.” I can relate to these words of wisdom. And my story serves as a proof that forging your own path and truly believing in what you to have to offer is the only way to fully experience what it means to be alive. I believe there’s always more we can do to help others and humanity as a whole. These grand aspirations serve as a … Read More …

Student turns tragedy into opportunity

Edward Flores is pursuing a degree in secondary education in hopes of becoming an assistant principal or principal at a high school.

Life is full of wonderful prospects that often pass us by. And in the last few years, I have learned that in order to succeed, one must take advantage of all the options available to us and never let opportunities go unnoticed, even if they are disguised as tragic circumstances. In 2008, I was involved in a bad car accident, fracturing my pelvis at the hip socket, which is one of the worst injuries a person can sustain. After going through several surgeries to repair it, I knew my road to recovery would be tough and riddled with many setbacks. But instead of wallowing in my own self pity, I … Read More …

Taking the risk worth the reward for one STC student

STC student Hugo Olivera hopes to become a middle school teacher one day.

My family is my source of inspiration for everything I do. When I initially decided to attend college, I remember thinking that it would be difficult to juggle my role as head of the household and as a student at the same time. My wife reassured me that I could handle it all and that going to college is a very small price to pay compared to what I would get in return, and this reinforced my decision to continue my studies. After serving in the Army for four years in places like Korea and Iraq, I was medically retired and I came back home with the notion that my life would never be the same. … Read More …
