The Information Technology Program at South Texas College will be hosting its 6th annual IT Career Expo on April 20 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at its Technology Campus Atrium.
The Expo has been created to promote the program and career choices available within the IT industry in the Rio Grande Valley. Various professionals will be on-hand to inform prospective students about a career path in IT, and will include possible internships or even job opportunities from the companies in attendance.
The Expo will be free to the public, and comprised of informational booths as well as presentations on cybersecurity, networking and computers specialists for anyone interested in learning more.
“Basically, what we are trying to do is allow students the opportunity to speak to local IT professionals so they can get an idea of what their career consists of, what education they need, and the opportunities that are available,” said STC Information Technology Instructor, Angelita Teniente. “We invite a variety of local IT professionals. This includes IT departments from school districts, from hospitals, and even local IT businesses.”
The Information Technology Program at STC, formerly Business Computer Systems, offers Associate degrees for Computer Specialists, Networking and Digital Forensics, which will be changing to Cybersecurity starting fall of 2017. The program also offers the prestigious Cisco Networking Academy, offering students the skills they need to thrive in an increasing digital economy.
“Sometimes people may think that there are no IT jobs here and feel they have to leave to Austin or further up north, but there are a lot of opportunities if you know where to look,” Teniente said. “In our program, the students have to complete a Capstone, which is equivalent to an internship, so a lot of these companies already know there will be potential interns or potential employees attending our event.
“These are companies that are ready and actively looking for interns. The main purpose is just to expose these opportunities, and give students the chance to talk to these companies in person,” she said.
