DEMSA announced as a 20th Anniversary Bellwether Legacy Award Finalist

Bellwether 1The South Texas College (STC) Dual Enrollment Medical Science Academy (DEMSA) was honored on December 11 as one of ten finalists, with a nomination for the 20th Anniversary Bellwether Legacy Award,  a special award created to commemorate the Community College Futures Assembly’s 20th Anniversary.

DEMSA is a two year-round dual enrollment program developed for high school juniors and seniors of the Starr County, Pecan and Mid-Valley Campus area who are seriously interested in pursuing a career in health care. The purpose of the program is to increase the number of rural area students committed to careers and service in medicine, pharmacy dentistry, nursing, allied health, and others.

Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) President and CEO J. Noah Brown served on a panel to announce the 2014 Community College Futures Assembly Bellwether Awards and Legacy Award nominees during a live online announcement.

“The Bellwether Award is among the most prestigious recognition given to those within the community college sector,” Brown said. “ACCT is proud and honored to be able to support the first-ever Legacy Award, and I am excited to be personally involved in the announcement of the awards.”

For 20 years, the Community College Futures Assembly has not only been a national policy summit, but also has recognized and promoted cutting-edge, trendsetting programs that other colleges might find worthy of replicating. Since 1995, the Assembly, sponsored by the Institute of Higher Education at the University of Florida, has recognized exemplary and effective programs through the awarding of the coveted Bellwether Award.

“This recognition simply affirms the exemplary status of the Dual Enrollment in Medical Science Academy.  The program has already helped prepare physicians for both Hidalgo and Starr counties, and is a model for recruiting future medical students for the new UT-Rio Grande Valley Medical School.”

Selected through a national panel of expert judges, 30 Bellwether Finalists in the three categories of Instructional Programs & Services, Planning, Governance & Finance, and Workforce Development, and ten finalists for the coveted Legacy Award will present their nominated programs at the 2014 Community College Futures Assembly this January 25-28 in Orlando, Florida has recognized exemplary and effective programs through the awarding of the coveted Bellwether Award.  For more information visit www.bellwethercc.org/.
