A call to help

Student of the Week: Lucero Andrea Garcia

“Whenever I help people and see them smile or be happy about what we’re hosting or giving out, it makes me happy. They don't look as stressed as they look in class. I know these events make them feel good. I just like putting smiles on people's faces.”

South Texas College freshmen Lucero Andrea Garcia may have just started her college career this summer, but she has already immersed herself in the Mid-Valley campus student life.

Garcia, a Criminal Justice major, is a member of the Student Government Association and volunteers with Student Activities and Wellness.

“I decided to join Student Activities because I like helping people,” Garcia said. “That's just how I am. I enjoy helping people.”

Her helping nature is what led Garcia to pursue an associate degree in Criminal Justice. Criminal Justice careers can encompass a variety of jobs. From police officers to private detectives, youth care workers to security guards, graduates can find employment opportunities in law enforcement at federal, state and local levels.

Garcia said attending STC is her first step toward answering her call to serve. She intends to become a police officer with the ambition of one day training to become a special weapons and tactics (SWAT) officer.

“It's always been a life dream of mine,” Garcia said. “I've always liked helping people and I’ve been into the detective aspect of it. I feel like once I’m further along in the program, I’ll see where I can go and build myself up from there.”

Originally from Florida, Garcia said she first considered enrolling at STC after her sisters told her about their experience at the campus.

“We were home schooled most of our lives, and STC was the main college we'd hear about,” Garcia said. “We thought it sounded like a really good college and we also heard it was very connected with the community, so we decided to attend. Overall, the instructors are on point and if we ever need help, we can always find someone to help us. It’s been a great experience.”

Garcia said she loves meeting with her fellow classmates and finding ways to give back to the campus community. Every day she discovers more aspects of what the college has to offer, and encourages students to take advantage of the different services provided by STC.

“We have events here every week and tutors and many other services,” Garcia said. “We also have sports and gyms on campus. That’s something not a lot of people know about.”

Garcia said the more she participates in volunteering, the more she wants to contribute.

“Whenever I help people and see them smile or be happy about what we’re hosting or giving out, it makes me happy,” Garcia said. “They don't look as stressed as they look in class. I know these events make them feel good. I just like putting smiles on people's faces.”
