A global journey toward a medical career

Marie-Louise Cros, 20, is pursuing an associate degree in Biology at South Texas College as the first step toward her dream of becoming a doctor. 

Born into a culturally diverse family with roots in France, Brazil and Mexico, Cros’ international background has deeply influenced her journey. Her father’s career brought the family to the U.S., while her brothers remain in France, pursuing their own studies in computer science. 

“My story is one of adaptation and perseverance,” Cros said. “I’m grateful for the opportunities STC has given me, and I’m determined to keep moving forward.” 

Inspired by a lifelong passion for science and the complexity of the human body, Cros envisions a future in biomedicine and medicine. 

“Since middle school, I’ve been fascinated by how sophisticated the human body is,” Cros said. 

This fascination motivated her decision to pursue her degree in biology. Cros discovered STC’s program through her research, both online and on campus. She is on track to graduate in spring 2025, with only two semesters left. 

Her commitment extends beyond academics, as she prepares to run for vice president of the Student Government Association and president of the International Student Club, while remaining an active member of the Student Ambassador Program. 

“This past semester, I ran for vice president of the Student Ambassador Program without expecting much,” she shared. “But winning that position taught me that even small steps and a bit of audacity can lead to big achievements,” said Cros. 

Cros said she also draws motivation from her family. 

“The people I admire the most are my parents. They’re role models of success for me,” she said. 

Her parents’ fearless approach to living abroad and taking opportunities inspired her to build her own path. 

“They taught me to be open to the world and that nothing happens by itself; you have to work for it,” said Cros. 

She admits she’s often faced challenges due to shyness, but strives to overcome them. STC has played a significant role in reshaping Cros’s relationship with academics. After a challenging year at a university in France, where she experienced burnout and self-doubt, STC offered a fresh start. 

“Before coming here, the thought of studying would trigger panic attacks, and I doubted my ability to succeed, but at STC, my instructors and peers changed my perspective. I’ve learned that with hard work, anything is possible, and now I actually enjoy studying,” said Cross. 

Her ultimate goal is to become a doctor, a passion she developed while observing surgeons.

“Seeing doctors in action made me realize that healing people is more than just a job, it’s a calling,” she said.
