Breaking Barriers at STC's Fire Academy

Citlaly Garcia, 17, is on her way to completing the South Texas College Fire Academy, a path she chose for its promising benefits and the opportunity to build a secure future.

Garcia, a dual credit student from Mission Collegiate High School, first learned about the academy through her school counselors, whose discussions about the program grabbed her interest. Now, more than ever, with nearly 10 months left until her high school graduation, Garcia is focused on her goals.

She said her drive and dedication come from her desire to make her mother proud.

“Seeing how proud my mom was of me when I got into the program made me decide to dedicate myself to this, for her and I,” she shared.

Garcia’s plans for next semester include working harder and hitting the books, with a primary focus on her studies.

“Study, study, study,” she emphasized.

Reflecting on her time at STC, Garcia expressed gratitude for the college’s unwavering support. As the only woman in her firefighting class, she has faced unique challenges.

“STC has provided me with a positive college experience, offering a safe environment where I don't feel the pressure of being the only girl,” Garcia said. “They've always made me feel secure and supported with resources like tutors, books, uniforms, Wi-Fi, desktops and snacks,” said Garcia.

Choosing STC was an easy decision for Garcia, given its proximity to her home.

“I chose STC because it’s right next to my house and I want to stay close to my family,” she said.

Her ultimate goal is to have a stable and safe future, and she believes the fire academy will help her achieve that.

Outside of her academic pursuits, Garcia plays soccer and has recently been certified as a medical assistant through her high school. Also, for more than two years, she has balanced a job in addition to her and extracurricular activities.

With all the support from STC and her family, Garcia said she is determined to keep pushing forward.

“My experiences this semester are so special to me, she said. “I am excited for graduation and to begin my career.”
