South Texas College Theatre & Dance Department Announces the Return of The South Texas Theatre Auditions in November

Summary

South Texas Theatre Auditions (STTA) has announced that auditions will be held Nov. 15. There are currently 21 university and conservatory theatre programs participating in this year’s event, which has been organized for students pursuing a degree in theatre with an opportunity to present their skills and portfolios for the consideration of college admissions representatives.

Theatre departments from colleges across the nation will begin scouting exceptional talent from the Rio Grande Valley beginning in November.

In collaboration with the University of Texas at Austin, PSJA ISD, and South Texas College’s Drama Department, South Texas Theatre Auditions (STTA) will offer high school seniors and graduating college students from the Valley who intend to pursue a degree in theatre, an opportunity to present monologues, musical theatre selections, and technical theatre portfolios for the consideration of college admissions representatives.

Auditions will be held Nov. 15, 2021 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the South Texas College Cooper Center for Communication Arts, located at 3200 W. Pecan Blvd. in McAllen.

There are currently 21 university and conservatory theatre programs participating in this year’s event. Seven out of the 21 universities are participating in-person event, and all are taking advantage of the virtual platform in one way or another, according to coordinators.

Universities attending South Texas Theatre Auditions as of press time include the University of Texas at Austin, Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, DePaul University, Southwestern University, Stephen F. Austin University, Sam Houston State University, Southern Methodist University, Carnegie Mellon University, Baylor University, Abilene Christian University, University of Houston, and many more from across the nation.

“We are excited to be hosting this event for a fifth year and to do so in-person and virtually, as well,” said Theatre & Dance Department Chair Joel Jason Rodriguez.

“Last year was a challenge for everyone and we found a way for students to participate virtually,” Rodriguez said. “This year, students and universities have the option to participate in-person, virtually, or both.

What began as a pilot program between the University of Texas at Austin and local theatre educators from across the Rio Grande Valley has now grown to include South Texas College as a major link for students seeking an opportunity to audition and present their work to university representatives from elite theatre programs statewide and across the nation.

Students interested in attending the auditions can learn more regarding registration and auditions at https://sites.utexas.edu/stta. Online registration closes by 12 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2021.

“For students, they have a lot of opportunities available to them. The partnership with PSJA ISD and the University of Texas at Austin on this project is invaluable and it is great to see how STTA made pursuing a theatre degree accessible to everyone,” Rodriguez said. “We believe education makes a world of difference in people’s lives. Students across the Rio Grande Valley will have an opportunity to audition and present their work to university representatives from some incredible theatre programs across Texas and the nation.”
