Chasing a nursing career inspired by her father’s legacy
Student of the Week: Nichole Luna
STC has impacted me in a lot of positive way. It has offered me a lot of opportunities that I didn’t even know I could have.
Nichole Luna, 20, is working toward an associate degree in Nursing at South Texas College and expects to graduate within the next couple of years, with hopes of pursuing a career in pediatrics or labor and delivery, with the goal to return to school and become a nurse practitioner.
Luna’s passion for nursing began at a young age. She grew up watching her father work as a nurse, realizing early on that she enjoyed helping people and that this was the right career path for her.
“I got inspired by my dad,” Luna said. “I got to see what he does, and I quickly became interested in it.”
In addition to her studies, Luna is part of STC’s work-study program, where she works in the Student Activities department at the Health Science Professions campus. Within this role, she helps organize student events that allow them to relax and make friends.
Aside from her work-study job, she is involved in Student Government Association (SGA), Student Leadership Academy and the Jag Unit, Social Media Club, where she enjoys connecting with others and building a safe community.
“I like putting myself out there and being able create new friendships through these organizations,” she said.
Her biggest motivation comes from her mother, who didn’t grow up with these educational opportunities.
“My mom didn’t have the chance to go to school,” she said. “So, I try to push myself, because I know how lucky I am for the opportunities that I do have.”
She credits STC for pushing her outside of her comfort zone and helping her grow while creating new experiences.
“STC has impacted me in a lot of positive ways,” Luna said. “It has offered me a lot of opportunities that I didn’t even know I could have.”
