Determined to grow in leadership

Karen Leon, a 22-year-old student at South Texas College, is working toward her bachelor’s degree in Organizational Leadership. 

While balancing a full-time job at Target and a full course load, Leon is focused on building a future where she can thrive in business and eventually lead others.  

Leon originally began her college journey pursuing nursing, but after some reflection, she realized her heart wasn’t in it. She took a break from school, leading her to full-time work, where she discovered her passion for leadership and business.  

Therefore, when she returned to STC, she visited with her advisor, who helped guide her into the right program. 

Now, Leon says she feels more grounded. She plans to graduate with her associate degree within a year and then continue to get her bachelor’s degree, all at her own pace.  

She said, that as a full-time student and employee, time management has become her biggest strength. 

“I try not to overload myself,” Leon said. “But I always make sure I pass and give it my best.” 

One of her most meaningful college memories comes from overcoming a challenging math class. After failing it once, she came back stronger the next semester with the support of STC’s tutoring center. 

“I took it online so I could go to tutoring and do everything at my own pace,” Leon said. “Robert at the CLE was a huge help. He motivated me. I ended up getting an A.” 

For Leon, staying motivated is about believing in herself, but she also draws inspiration from others, especially young professionals at her job who are already in leadership positions. 

“If they can do it, I can do it too,” she said. “I see that and tell myself not to give up.” 

Despite the challenges of living away from family, she and her brother have pushed through together. Both work and go to school, and her brother is set to begin his journey at STC this fall. 

“It's hard, but nothing is impossible,” Leon said. “We’ve been able to stay focused and work toward better opportunities.” 

Her long-term goal is to continue moving up in her job or explore other career paths in business. She’s open to new opportunities and believes her education will give her the foundation to grow. 

Outside of work and school, Leon hopes to make more time for herself. She’s interested in returning to the gym and possibly starting Pilates to relax and recharge. 

Above all, she credits her strength and perseverance to her faith. 

“There’s a verse I love in Spanish: ‘Dios Por Adelante.’ If you put God first, everything will fall into place,” she said.
