Dr. Maria Y. Cervantes - 2019 NISOD Award Recipient

"As an instructor, Dr. Cervantes continues to dedicate time and energy to get to know her students, set high expectations, and make material relevant."

Dr. Cervantes earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Pharmacology from Indiana University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from Our Lady of the Lake University. As Program Chair for the Department of Biology, she has demonstrated excellent leadership capabilities and a strong commitment to serving the students at South Texas College. She has created a positive work environment for faculty which has translated to faculty involvement with student clubs, community service activities, and expanding research opportunities for students.

Most recently she led faculty in the application and successful attainment of the SEA PHAGE research grant program sponsored by Howard Hughes Medical Institute. STC became one of two institutions to be granted this prestigious award in the state of Texas. As an instructor, Dr. Cervantes continues to dedicate time and energy to get to know her students, set high expectations, and make material relevant.
