Finding confidence in mathematics
Student of the Week: Nancy Garcia Moreno
I used to think I wasn’t capable of stepping out of my shell, but STC helped me. Now, I want to help others see that they can do it too.
Nancy Garcia Moreno is pursuing an associate degree in Mathematics at South Texas College, with plans to specialize in statistics. While many students do not like to deal with numbers, Moreno has embraced them.
“I’ve always been good at math, but I never thought I’d make a career out of it,” Moreno said. “It just felt like the right path, and now I’m aiming to specialize in statistics.”
Her passion for numbers and probability led her to consider a career as an actuary, a profession that assesses risk using mathematics and statistical analysis.
“Math is like an escalator,” she explained. “You must understand one step before moving on to the next. It’s challenging, but also very structured, which I like.”
Now a full-time student expected to graduate next spring, Moreno is actively involved in multiple student organizations. She is a member of the Student Government Association (SGA), the Student Leadership Academy and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.
“I used to be really shy,” she said. “I never imagined myself getting involved, but these organizations helped me break out of my shell. Now, I feel more confident helping new students and guiding them through their own college experiences.”
Her journey into leadership started unexpectedly when she and a friend attended an SGA kickoff event while exploring the campus.
“It was completely random, but I decided to join, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve made,” she said. “I’ve met so many different people and gained leadership skills I never thought I would have.”
Moreno’s biggest motivation comes from her family, as well as faculty and staff at STC. She also credits several mentors on campus for their guidance and support.
“My STC advisors Chantal Lopez and Angela Perez and Javier Garcia have been incredibly motivating,” she said. “Their support has helped me push myself further and stay on track with my goals.”
Her goal for this semesters simple:
“Push myself more,” she said. “I procrastinated last semester, but I’ve been improving. I know I can always do better.”
As she moves closer to graduation, Moreno hopes to continue growing academically and personally, helping others along the way.
