Discovering a true calling in Business

Javier Flores is set to graduate this summer with an associate degree in Business Administration, with a specialization in Management, from South Texas College.

His path to this degree was not a straight one, but through trial and self-discovery, he found his passion in business.

Originally, Flores pursued a degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, influenced by his parents’ encouragement to enter the medical field. After researching career options, he chose the program at STC because of its affordability and strong academic offerings. However, once he started taking anatomy courses, he realized it wasn’t the right fit.

“I wasn’t a big fan of anatomy,” Flores admitted. “Halfway through the program, I started spending more time with my dad’s business connections, and I realized I was more interested in business than in the medical field.”

One of the most influential figures in his decision to change majors was was a family friend, who successfully started his own business after earning his associate degree from STC.

“He built his own company selling wood at lower prices than big retailers like Home Depot,”

Flores said. “That really inspired me to change my major.”

With graduation quickly approaching, Flores has a clear plan for his future. He plans to earn additional certifications and eventually open his own trucking company, expanding on his father’s business.

“My dad has been a truck driver for years, and I asked him, ‘Why don’t you expand and get more truck drivers,’” Flores said. “My goal is to eventually build up the business. and establish a few other businesses so that by the time I’m older, I can focus on my family and not have to work so much.”

Beyond academics, Flores has made the most of his college experience through extracurricular activities, including intramural sports and student leadership.

“This past semester, I competed in intramural flag football, and we became national champions,” he said. “We traveled to Texas A&M for regionals and then to Florida, where we played in the Jacksonville Jaguars’ stadium. It was an amazing experience.”

In addition to sports, Flores is also a dedicated member of STC’s Student Ambassadors program, where he serves as a tour guide, introducing new students to the campus. His involvement in student leadership started through his job search, which led him to STC’s work-study program. Through this role, Flores has had the opportunity to connect with students of all ages, but his favorite moments are with elementary school students.

“They’re always so excited and full of questions,” he said. “I still wear a bracelet a student gifted me during one of my first tours. It’s a great reminder of how meaningful these interactions are.”

Flores credits his family, especially his father, as his biggest source of motivation.

“My dad has always pushed me to give 100% in everything I do,” he said. “I want to build a future where I can provide for my family and have time to enjoy life with them.”

With his degree almost complete and his goals firmly set, Flores is ready to take on the next chapter of his journey, one that leads to entrepreneurship, leadership and success.
