First-gen student sets sights on shaping young minds
Student of the Week: Yarileth Escobedo
Teaching has always stood out to me as a career where I can make a real difference. I want to help students believe in themselves.
Yarileth Escobedo, 19, is currently pursuing an associate degree in Education at South Texas College. A proud Starr County Campus student, Escobedo has her sights set on a future as an elementary school teacher, a dream rooted in her belief that every child deserves a person who sees their potential and encourages their growth.
“Teaching has always stood out to me as a career where I can make a real difference,” Escobedo said. “I want to help students believe in themselves.”
Her passion for education started early, shaped by the positive influence of her own teachers who made lasting impressions on her life.
“There were several teachers who really supported me, especially during difficult times,” she said. “Their kindness and encouragement inspired me to want to do the same for others,” said Escobedo.
Escobedo is a first-generation college student, making this journey even more meaningful. She credits her grandma and aunt as the driving forces behind her dedication and success.
“They’ve always supported me no matter what and want the best for me,” she said. “Their belief in me pushes me forward.”
She first learned about STC’s Education program through her high school counselor and quickly realized the college was the right choice for her.
“The affordable tuition, and the fact that it’s close to home, made STC the perfect fit,” Escobedo said. “It’s helped me grow not just academically, but personally too.”
On top of her studies, Escobedo stays active on campus. She volunteers with STC Student Activities and Wellness on the Starr County Campus and participates in various leadership events.
One of her most memorable experiences this semester was traveling to Austin with the Student Government Association to represent and advocate for the college and volunteering at local tree-planting and campus cleanup events.
“Being involved has helped me build confidence and find community here,” she said. “But the best part has been meeting one of my closest friends.”
She expects to graduate next spring and plans to continue her academic core classes in the upcoming semester. While the path hasn’t always been easy, she remains focused and motivated by her long-term goal of becoming a teacher who makes a positive impact.
