First step into a medical career

Kevin Ortiz, 17, is on his way to achieving his dream of becoming a doctor, and his first step is pursuing an associate degree in Biology as a dual credit student at South Texas College. 

It has not always been an easy journey, but Ortiz said he looks to his mother for motivation. “She is a very hardworking woman and always accomplishes what she sets her mind to,” he said. ““My mom has always believed in me, and I want to do something that makes her proud.” 

Ortiz first learned about the dual credit program at STC through an email he received upon graduating from middle school, and now, with just one more year until his high school and college graduation, he is eager to share his journey. 

He added, that STC has significantly impacted his life, particularly his instructors and their guidance.

 “They showed me that I need to stop underestimating myself and keep pushing. This has helped me not only in school, but also in my everyday life,” he said. “I am also especially thankful that this opportunity has allowed me, and many students, to achieve a significant accomplishment at such a young age. It gives us a huge jumpstart to our careers.” 

In fact, one of his instructors, Reynaldo Jope, gave Ortiz some words of encouragement last semester that have helps him keep pushing forward. 

“He said I was a very smart young man and that he believed in me,” Ortiz recalled. “It’s words like this that make all the difference.” 

Ortiz is a second-generation student, following in the footsteps of his mother who graduated from National Pedagogic University in Mexico City. As an only child, he said he feels a powerful sense of responsibility to make his mother proud. His goal is to open his own pediatric clinic and help children live healthy and strong lives. 

“I want to make a difference in children’s lives,” Ortiz said. “I want to ensure that everyone, including children, have access to dependable health care.” 

Outside of his academic pursuits, Ortiz enjoys playing various sports and has participated in intramural sports and early college tournaments held at STC. He loves meeting other students and has made many friendships through these activities. 

While he has not made a final decision on which college or university to transfer to, Ortiz said he sees the potential of continuing as an STC Jaguar. 

“STC has given me an opportunity to get my associate degree while still in high school. This has been a great way to stay on track with my goals,” he said.
