From childhood dream to career goal

For South Texas College student Robert Little, protecting and serving his community is more than just a career goal it’s a lifelong ambition.

At 26 years old, he is taking a significant step toward becoming a Texas state trooper through STC’s Police Academy.

“I’ve wanted to be a state trooper since I was 6,” Little said. “This program puts me ahead in the application process, making me a stronger candidate when I apply to the Department of Public Safety (DPS).”

The six-month academy at STC provides structured, hands-on training for aspiring officers. Students complete a series of modules and exams, covering everything from Texas penal codes to tactical procedures. With graduation set for June, Little is pushing through the rigorous coursework, which requires cadets to maintain an 80% or higher to pass.

Although law enforcement has always been his calling, Little originally planned to apply directly to DPS’s training academy. However, after not being selected in his first attempt, he sought out STC’s Police Academy to refine his skills and strengthen his qualifications.

“This program gives me an edge,” he said. “It shows my dedication and persistence, which are crucial in this field.”

Beyond the classroom, Little finds motivation through his wife, a recent graduate of STC’s Nursing program, who now works as a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) nurse at Rio Grande Regional Hospital.

“She worked incredibly hard to get where she is, and that pushes me to do the same,” he said.

Little credits STC’s Law Enforcement program for providing him with the tools, experience and confidence to pursue his dream. Whether students are seeking careers as patrol officers, investigators, special agents or state troopers, the program prepares them to serve and protect with integrity.

For anyone considering a career in law enforcement, Little has one piece of advice.

“Setbacks aren’t failures,” he said. “If you truly want something, keep pushing forward. Hard work pays off.”

With his persistence, discipline and unwavering commitment to public service, Little is well on his way to earning his peace officer’s license and securing a future as a Texas state trooper.
