From family roots to future business leader

South Texas College student Carlos Vazquez Flores is currently pursuing an associate degree in Business, inspired by watching his mother run her own stationary business and his dad work as a strategic sourcing manager. With influence from his family, Flores developed an interest in the field at a young age. That interest has motivated him to pursue a career in the industry, with long term goals of opening up his own solar electric business.

“I’ve been working with my mom since I was little, so I’ve always been around it,” he said. “That’s what made me want to go into this field.”

In addition to his studies, Flores is actively involved on campus. He currently serves as the Vice President of the Student Government Association (SGA), is part of the leadership program and works as a student ambassador. Through these roles, he has attended numerous meetings, events and galas that have helped him grow as a leader.

Flores is also an international student from Mexico who commutes daily from Reynosa to McAllen. Each day he wakes up before dawn to make the drive and arrive on campus by 10 a.m. He says his motivation comes from his passion and desire to succeed.

Flores credits STC for providing him with countless opportunities to grow both professionally and personally. He expresses gratitude for the doors that have opened up through his involvement on campus.

“I’m a student now with a lot of professional and social experiences,” he said. “So far, it has been amazing. I’ve been really involved and it has helped me grow a lot.”

Flores encourages future students to stay focused, remain determined and avoid procrastination to achieve their goals.
