From patient to purpose: STC ADN graduate answers a calling shaped by faith, family and compassion

For Sandra Gloria, 23, graduating from South Texas College’s Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) Program is more than just completing coursework, it is the fulfillment of a calling shaped by personal experience, faith and the unwavering support of her family.

From an early age, Gloria felt naturally drawn to health care. What inspired her most about nursing was the opportunity to build meaningful patient relationships and care for individuals not just physically, but holistically.

As a former patient herself, she remembers the nurses whose kindness made her feel seen and supported. Those moments left a lasting impression.

“I realized I wanted to offer that same level of care to others,” she said. “Those nurses made a difference in my life, and I wanted to become that kind of nurse.”

Gloria entered the program with an open mind, but she discovered her true calling during her final semester while completing a preceptorship in her dream unit, Labor and Delivery. The very first birth she witnessed confirmed everything for her.

“Seeing life come into the world reminded me of the beauty and purpose within nursing,” she said. “Not all nursing is about illness or loss; there are also incredible moments of joy. That experience showed me that I chose the right profession.”

Her journey, however, was far from easy. When she entered the program, her daughter was only 3 months old. Gloria found herself navigating the demands of nursing school while also learning how to be a new mother.

“There were times when I felt guilty for not spending enough time with her,” she said. “But over time, I learned to give myself grace and trust that everything I was doing was for her future.”

Her success would not have been possible without the love and support of her family. Her parents, siblings, husband and in-laws stepped in to care for her daughter so she could study, attend clinicals and complete her coursework.

“My family is the reason I got through this program,” she said. “Their support meant everything to me.”

Hands-on patient care strengthened Gloria’s confidence. Every clinical shift taught her something new, helping her grow both professionally and personally. Her proudest moments came from patients and families who expressed gratitude during clinicals.

“Even as a student, being told that I made someone feel comfortable or supported meant the world to me,” she said. “It reminded me that nursing is just as much about human connection as it is about skill.”

Gloria credits her instructors for shaping her success in the program. From instructors who checked in on her during stressful weeks to those who made complex concepts simple, she says their dedication helped her grow into a confident future Registered Nurse (RN).

As a first-generation daughter of immigrant parents, earning this degree carries profound meaning.

“My parents sacrificed so much to give me opportunities they never had,” she said. “This degree is proof that their struggles and dreams were not in vain.”

Gloria hopes her journey inspires others who may be doubting themselves.

“Nursing school is challenging and at times it can be overwhelming, but don’t give up,” she said. If you stay committed, believe in yourself and keep pushing, you will achieve your goals.”

Gloria plans to pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), begin her nursing career in Labor and Delivery and later enroll in STC’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program to continue advancing her education.
