From STC Interdisciplinary Studies to Aspiring Engineer

South Texas College student Santiago Garcia is on a journey toward engineering, propelled by a love for math and a curiosity for new challenges.

"My sister sparked my interest in this field. She also pursued engineering and is now working in the field," said Garcia.

The 21-year-old said he is eager to dive back into his studies after a short break last semester.

His goal for the upcoming semester is simple yet profound - navigate through classes, excel academically and make his parents happy.

Garcia, having already earned his associate in interdisciplinary studies in 2023, anticipates further academic achievements and firmly believes in the power of small steps, regardless of the hurdles, for the upcoming years.

He added that dreaming of securing a bachelor's degree in engineering and later venturing into law, motivates him.

"Never give up on your dreams because they're uniquely yours; find joy in the journey, even amidst the challenges," said Garcia.

Reflecting on his academic journey, Santiago extends gratitude to STC for its affordability and proximity to home providing a comfortable haven for him to plan his academic pursuits without the added weight of financial strain.

In introducing his close-knit family, Garcia proudly mentions his twin sister, Samantha Garcia the engineer, and his younger brothers, Sebastian  and Samuel. He said he hopes to set a positive example.

And although Garcia is not a first-generation college student, he said he draws inspiration from his mother, the family's educational pioneer and who earned the first bachelor's degree in the family, instilling in him a deep appreciation for the value of education.

Garcia’s aspirations extend beyond personal success; he aims to take pride in his achievements, contribute meaningfully to his chosen field, and, above all, make his parents beam with pride.
