Making an impact through Respiratory Therapy

Alexa Bravo, 19, has found her calling as a student in the Respiratory Therapy program at South Texas College, where she is determined to make a difference, especially in helping newborns who experience breathing problems.

“I love babies,” Bravo said. “I know that some of them have trouble breathing when they’re born, and I would love to help them.”

Bravo’s passion for respiratory therapy started during the pandemic, when lung health became a global focus. Witnessing the struggles of those affected by respiratory illnesses inspired her to pursue this career path.

“They started announcing the program, and it caught my attention,” Bravo said. “That’s something I didn’t know affected so many people.”

Now well into her studies, Bravo aims to complete her degree in two years and looks forward to a future where she can help those in need—especially newborns fighting for their first breaths.

“I want to be part of the solution for babies who have respiratory issues,” Bravo said. “To help them live is my ultimate goal.”

Bravo’s journey at STC has been more than just academic. Thanks to her involvement with Student Activities, particularly in intramural sports, she has found a community of friends and mentors who motivate her to stay on track.

“I’ve met a lot of people, thanks to our flag football team,” Bravo said. “Playing sports has helped me build relationships and stay active.”

Bravo’s experience at STC has not only shaped her future career but also helped her grow personally. She credits the friendly environment and supportive staff for making her feel welcomed since day one.

“STC has made me more social,” Bravo said. “Everyone here is so friendly, and the staff treats you so well. They really make you feel like family.”

As a first-generation college student, Bravo is proud to be paving the way for her family and hopes her journey will inspire others.

“I chose STC because it has so many options, and it’s close to my house,” she said. “I’m excited to keep doing what I love and always have fun.”
