Mechanical engineering prodigy at STC

At only 16 years old, Jose Rodriguez is already making waves in the field of mechanical engineering at South Texas College. With a passion for problem solving and a drive to make a positive impact on the world, Rodriguez's journey into engineering was inspired by his father who has always pushed him to be the best he can be. 

“I decided to pursue this degree because I like the idea of using my problem-solving skills and at the same time helping the world,” Rodriguez said. 

Rodriguez first learned about the mechanical engineering program at STC through a dual credit partnership between his high school and STC, which has been a huge help in providing him with an amazing opportunity. He is on track to complete his associate degree before graduating from high school. 

“STC has given me an opportunity to get my associate degree, while still being in high school. This is a great way to stay on track with my goals,” he said, grateful for the head start on his academic journey. 

Motivation comes from those closest to him. “I get motivated by all of my friends and family who have helped me not get discouraged when I do not have the motivation to study,” he shared. 

Aside from his engineering pursuits, Rodriguez is actively involved in extracurricular activities. “I participated in volleyball, soccer in the last tournament with STC,” he said. Some of his fondest memories this semester has come from participating in soccer and volleyball tournaments. “We were so close to winning both sports we were a closed second ,and the experience brought us all closer together,” Rodriguez recalled. 

Looking ahead, Rodriguez has ambitious goals. “My end goal is to be a successful engineer, and my dream would be to work as a mechanical engineer at SpaceX,” he shared.
