I've always believed I could reach success easily if I pursue to expand and polish my passion: music. STC has provided me with invaluable opportunities to grow.

STC Student of the Week Joaquin Barrera

Joaquin Barrera is making harmonious strides toward his dreams at South Texas College, where he is pursuing an Associate of Arts degree in Music with a focus on guitar.

For the 22-year-old, the journey toward a career in music wasn't always clear-cut. Initially, he ventured into Computer Science, believing it was his path toward success. However, when he enrolled in a music appreciation class, it all changed.

"I've always believed I could reach success easily if I pursue to expand and polish my passion: music," Barrera reflects.

The class helped sparked an inner interest in music that surpassed his interest in cybersecurity.

"It was like a light bulb moment," Barrera explains. "I realized I can do more with music than I could with cybersecurity."

Inspired by this revelation, Barrera set his sights on STC's music program, driven by the prospect of honing his musical talents. Barrera’s journey in music truly began when he met his guitar instructor Jaime Garcia.

Since then, Barrera has immersed himself in STC's musical community. He is an active member of the Sound of Spain, the college's esteemed guitar ensemble, and the Modern Rock Band.

"STC has provided me with invaluable opportunities to grow as a musician. Being part of the Sound of Spain and the Modern Rock Band has been both fulfilling and enriching," said Barrera.

Looking toward the future, Barrera aspires to soar to new heights. Next semester, he plans to broaden his horizons by taking classes at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in addition to his studies at STC.

"I'm working toward a doctorate degree in music," Barrera shares. "My ultimate goal is to teach at the college level, inspiring and nurturing the next generation of musicians."

Throughout his journey, Barrera remains grateful for the unwavering support of his family and friends.

"I'm grateful for my family and all the friends I've made at STC for supporting my goals and ambitions.”

As Barrera strums his way toward success, his passion for music continues to grow in his journey at South Texas College.
