Office Administration going strong in preparing workers

One of the longest standing departments at South Texas College is Office Administration. Department Chair Iris Jasso explained why the program has been effective for so long.

“I believe this program is very successful because of the faculty and staff’s unity and working closely together with the students from the point of entry into our program until graduation,” Jasso said, “Our faculty advise and register students, we are committed to the success of students in the program.”

The department offers three pathways: Legal Office Specialist certificate, Office specialist certificate, and Administrative Office Assistant which is an Associate of Applied Science.

The Office Administration program has been developed and reviewed in consultation with an Advisory Committee selected from representative business, institutional, and industrial employers. This helps to ensure that the curriculum addresses the industry needs of today and the near future.

That commitment has proven successful with many students landing employment around the region. To name a few alumni are working at law firms like Atlas, Hall and Rodriguez; David Cazares Law Firm and inside of education offices such as Mission CISD and McAllen ISD.

Some have even stayed “in-house” to work for the college.

Jasso said the skills taught in tailored classes that are valuable and practical to the career’s students will hold after completing their degree. Courses such as spreadsheets and professional communication will turn students into competent team members.

“Students learn office procedures, customer services, workplace skills, computer technical skills, business English, keyboarding, etiquette, professionalism, strong work ethic, and much more.” She said.

Jasso also said that the department has a strong relationship with local employers and companies in need of interns. This relationship grows as more well-equipped students go through the program and represent STC in the field.

“I believe this program is very successful because of the faculty and staff’s unity and working closely together with the students from the point of entry into our program until graduation,” Jasso said, “Our faculty advise and register students, we are committed to the success of students in the program.”

“This department has a relationship with employers especially when interns are placed at companies. Other employers learn that we have an internship so they begin calling our office for more interns.” Jasso said.

Another benefit to the Office Admin program is being able to complete a certificate without taking the TSI placement exam. Upon completing the certificate students have the option to begin working in an office setting or continuing their education to the Associate of Applied Science level.
