I want to be a motivator instead of a boss. It's been a long road, but it's all been worth it.

STC Student of the Week Pedro Salinas

At 32 years old, Pedro Alfonso Salinas is on a mission to make a difference through a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Leadership from South Texas College.

His decision to pursue this degree started from a desire to lead by example and be an authentic leader, focusing on motivating others rather than simply occupying a higher position.

Salinas first obtained an associate degree in May of 2023 from STC. "I want to be a motivator instead of a boss," Salinas said.

Discovering the Organizational Leadership program at STC was a pivotal moment for Salinas. He stumbled upon it while exploring the college's website and a recommendation from a close friend who completed the program further solidified his decision. . As he nears graduation in December, Salinas reflects on his journey with anticipation.

His unwavering motivation stems from his mother, a resilient breast cancer survivor.

"Without her, I wouldn't be where I am today," Salinas shared, highlighting her profound influence on his journey.

As Salinas prepares for the final stretch, his advice to himself is simple yet powerful: "Finish strong."

He added that he will remain focused on his goal of obtaining his bachelor’s degree.

"Graduation is just around the corner, and I can't wait to cross that stage. It's been a long road, but it's all been worth it," he shared with a sense of pride.

Salinas’ journey is also a testament to the importance of family and setting an example for future generations. As a first-generation college graduate, he is determined to show his children and family the value of hard work and dedication.

"My family has always been my biggest supporters. They inspire me to keep pushing forward," Salinas said.

Beyond the classroom, Salinas stays active through sports, participating in football, basketball and volleyball as part of STC's Intramural Sports program. He aspires to become a teacher and coach to help guide and inspire others.

In retrospect, Salinas acknowledges the invaluable support and guidance he has received at STC, crediting the college for helping him overcome challenges and achieve his goals.
