On the path to a brighter future

Jose Manuel Guerra, 19, is pursuing an associate degree in Interdisciplinary Studies at South Texas College.

Despite not initially planning to attend college, Guerra was encouraged by his high school counselor to apply to STC.

"Truthfully, I didn't apply to any colleges before graduating. It wasn't my priority at the time, but my counselor recommended STC, so I did, and I am glad I made the decision," he said. "I decided to pursue a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies because it fit my goals and makes transferring to a university easier.”

Guerra's decision came after a recommendation from Kelli Davis, Ph.D., director of STC’s Transfer and Educational Advancement Center. Now, with a more focused path, he estimates he will be ready to graduate by fall 2025.

Ready for next semester, Guerra plans to keep his grades up and run for president of the Student Government Association.

"My fellow classmates and friends are my motivation. It’s inspiring watching them work hard and accomplish their goals," he shared.

Some of Guerra's special college memories, he said, are from this past semester.

“Spending time with my friends at the Student Activity Center and working with the SGA has been really memorable," he said.

He added that STC has had a huge impact on his life, both academically and personally.

"South Texas College has changed my view on education and its importance, and it has helped me develop as a person," he said.

Guerra comes from a family that values education. Although he is not a first-generation college student, his mother attended Pan American University, he feels a strong sense of responsibility to continue his education.

Currently focused on his studies and involvement with the SGA, Guerra's ultimate goal is to become a doctor.

"I'm studying to become a doctor. I haven't decided what kind yet, but I am excited to explore my options here at STC," he shared.
