Pursuing a Career in Criminal Justice
Student of the Week: Joellia Hernandez
Attending STC made me feel welcomed and gave me the tools to pursue my goals.
Joellia Hernandez, 20, is working toward her associate degree in criminal justice at STC with the ultimate goal of becoming a state trooper. Inspired by childhood memories and a drive to help others, Hernandez is determined to make her dream a reality.
“From a young age, I loved watching shows like The First 48 and Cops because they showed the realities of criminal justice,” Hernandez said. “Since then, I knew I wanted a career in this field.”
Her interest in law enforcement began in elementary school at a career fair.
“It was the way state troopers presented their role. That moment solidified my decision to pursue this career. “Hernandez said.
While she has no direct family connections to law enforcement, Hernandez sees her own life experiences as a way to connect with others.
“I’ve faced challenges that gave me a unique perspective,” she said. “I want to use that knowledge to help others through hard times.”
Hernandez credits her family and a strong support network for her success.
“My parents and my sister have been my biggest supporters,” she said. “I’m also grateful for a former JROTC sergeant and his wife, who have motivated me to never give up. Achieving my goals takes persistence and perseverance, and they’ve reminded me of that every step of the way.”
One of Hernandez’s proudest accomplishments is being inducted into the Beta Epsilon Mu Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, STC’s honor society.
“Being introduced to PTK was a special moment for me,” she said. “I never imagined myself coming this far.”
Hernandez is in her final semester at STC, with three classes left before graduation. She plans to focus entirely on finishing her degree and preparing for the next steps in her career.
Hernandez credits South Texas College for fostering her confidence and helping her succeed.
“Attending STC made me feel welcomed and gave me the tools to pursue my goals,” she said.
Her advice for herself and others is straightforward: “Don’t stop until you can say, ‘I did it.’”
