Pursuing a future in forensics

At just 18 years old, Leticia Reyes Orozco is working toward her associate degree in Criminal Justice at South Texas College, and expects to graduate in the fall. .  

She hopes to continue her education and earn a bachelor's degree in the future. 

“My end goal is to become part of a forensics team or work within that field,” Orozco said.  

“It’s something that interests me, and I’m excited to see where it takes me.” 

She first learned about STC’s programs through her high school, Sharyland Pioneer High School, and chose to enroll at STC partly because it’s close to home and the influence of her older sister, Selena Orozco, who is an STC alumna. 

“My sister was the first in my family to graduate, and I’m next in line,” she said. “Having that example to follow has helped me stay motivated.” 

Orozco credits her time at STC with helping her grow both personally and socially. One of her favorite experiences has been the connections she made in her art class. 

“I met so many cool people, and I still talk to them today,” she said. “They helped me become more confident in myself.” 

Support from her family and loved ones has also played a significant role in helping her push forward. 

“My biggest supporters and inspiration are my boyfriend and my sister,” she said. “They always encourage me to keep going, and that pushes me to do better.” 

Looking ahead to her final semester, Orozco’s focus is to stay disciplined and avoid procrastination. 

“My advice is to always be prepared for the unexpected. It’s important not to fall behind.” 

She also appreciates the sense of community STC provides, particularly through its campus events. 

“STC has shown me that there are a lot of cool people out there and that you’re never really alone,” she said. “It’s a good place to go to school.” 

Beyond academics, Orozco holds deep gratitude for her grandmother, who played a major role in shaping the person she is today. 

“My grandma took care of me and helped me become who I am,” she said. “I’m forever grateful to her.” 

With graduation approaching and her passion for forensics driving her forward, Orozco is determined to make the most of her education and take the next steps toward a meaningful career in criminal justice.
