Pursuing Dreams and Inspiring Others

Jose Soto, 20, is a first-generation college student currently working towards his associate degree in Interdisciplinary Studies at South Texas College.

 "I decided to pursue this degree to explore different areas of study," Soto said. “It doesn't restrict me to a single area and gives me the option to explore new opportunities.”

Soto was introduced to the Interdisciplinary Studies program by an advisor at STC.

"The advisor suggested that I major in Interdisciplinary Studies because I plan to transfer to a four-year university," he explained. “This program makes it easier for me to transfer my credits.”

Soto said he chose STC for its convenient location close to home and its affordable tuition.

"STC is a steppingstone," he explained. “And its affordability has been a huge help for me to achieve my degree.”

Soto is expected to graduate in the fall of 2024, and, and as an active student on campus, he plans to stay involved in extracurricular activities, such as STC’s  Student Government Association (SGA) and the Criminal Justice Club.

He also works part-time at the Student Activities & Wellness Department.

 "College doesn't stop at the classroom door. We want students to experience college life to its fullest by joining these organizations," Soto stated.

Reflecting on last semester, Soto fondly recalls a trip he took with the Criminal Justice Club.

"Traveling to Huntsville, Texas, with the Criminal Justice Club was a special memory. We got the opportunity to take a deeper look into the criminal justice system and its history," said Soto.

Soto said he draws motivation to succeed from several sources.

“My family, especially my mother, grandmother and aunt, are my biggest supporters,” he shared.

As the first person in his family to attend college, Soto takes pride in his accomplishments. He is grateful that he gets to make his family proud.

Looking ahead to his final semester, Soto shares advice with other students.

“Be proactive with your studies and never hesitate to ask for help,” he said.

Soto's goal is to become an architect.

"I dream to inspire creativity, craftsmanship and emotion through my work," he shared. “I want to make a difference in the world for others to be inspired and make a difference in their community. And with this next semester being my last, I want to give it my all to achieve greatness.”

He expressed gratitude for the opportunities STC has provided.

"I would like to give a big thanks to STC for the opportunities it has given me to demonstrate leadership and for helping me overcome challenges while supporting and guiding me to achieve my goals," he said. I deeply believe that STC is the place to find success.”
