STC students join reforestation efforts at Sal Del Rey

South Texas College students joined local schools and community members in tree planting efforts to restore over 17 acres of native habitat at Sal Del Rey, one of several natural salt lakes north of the Rio Grande. Fifty-Eight STC students and eight faculty participated in the event organized by the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, which included students from the Student Government Association (SGA), Student Leadership Academy and various clubs including Biology, Social Work, Sociology, and Spanish.

South Texas College Student Government Association (SGA) held its first swear-in ceremony and training for 2019-2020 officers district wide Oct. 4. SGA is the representative organization for STC’s student body. Its provides a forum for a free and open discussion of matters affecting students, and aims to promote the general welfare of the student body by serving as an advocate for student issues and presenting the student perspective to campus administration, faculty and college committees.

The Division of Business, Technology, and Public Safety at South Texas College hosted its “Unmasking Your Super Powers” speaker series featuring professionals in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Oct. 23. At the event, a distinguished panel shared their experiences while encouraging students to explore exciting careers in STEM. Guest speakers included Priscilla Duran, Community Relations Specialist with the Office of Texas Gov. Greg Abbot; Iliana Elizondo, Director of Interpreting Services at Doctors’ Hospital at Renaissance; Luis Figueroa, AIA Principal and owner of ROFA Architects Inc.; Jennifer Venecia, Marketing Director with Chick Fil A; and Monica Guajardo, Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Sergeant.
