Focused and motivated to always try to do the best at whatever he does, Herman Larumbe believes in being competitive to reach his goals.

With a passion for soccer and teaching, Herman draws upon his experience teaching small children the skills of the game as a coach. In the future however, he hopes to coach soccer to adults while working towards his ultimate goal to one day coach semi-pro and professional soccer athletes.

Entering South Texas College in 2017, Herman is currently pursuing his associate degree in Kinesiology.“I chose to attend STC because it was the college that met my needs,” Herman said. “It has been a fantastic experience since all the professors are well prepared to teach, and help each student learn every day.”Currently a soccer coach at Plaza Sport Center, a soccer academy in Pharr, Herman says he would like to be a soccer coach in high school, but his biggest dream remains to be a professional coach in Major League Soccer.

Faculty with the Kinesiology Department at South Texas College seek to prepare their majors to continue along an educational path to meet their goals as advocates for healthy lifestyles.

The department offers a variety of courses in the areas of physical education teaching, fitness, health education, and specialized certification courses. Kinesiology added its much anticipated personal trainer certificate in 2019.

The certificate includes an introduction to personal training that enables students to explore all areas of the personal training occupation including marketing, legal aspects, and psychology while emphasizing one-on-one or group training situations.

The vast majority of Kinesiology lecture courses are transferable toward a B.S. degree in Kinesiology at 4-year institutions.

“Some advice that I would give to my colleagues and peers is to be clear about what you want in life and always do you best to be able to stand out from others,” he said. “In addition, to be successful in college you need to try to work or volunteer in an area of your studies to gain experience.”
