STC Accounting Department provides VITA assistance

During the month of February and March, the Accounting Department through the VITA program has completed over 300 tax returns, saving the taxpayers roughly $30,000, with total taxpayer refunds of over $700,000. All this is done with 6 student volunteers, 1 lead faculty, and 3 faculty volunteers.

Since 2011, the Accounting Department at South Texas College has been providing Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) to the community. This free Income Tax service is facilitated by South Texas College Accounting faculty and students.

The program is led by the United Way organization and the Internal Revenue Service and ran by the Accounting Instructors. The IRS provides training for all participants and certifies that faculty and students have completed the necessary requirements to provide this service to the community.
