STC and TSC sign agreement benefiting students with Associate of Applied Science Degree

South Texas College together with Texas Southmost College in Brownsville on Monday signed an articulation agreement allowing students who have an earned an Associate of Applied Science Degree from TSC to transfer into bachelor’s degree programs at STC.

In attendance at the event included STC President Dr. Shirley A. Reed and TSC Interim President Mike Shannon, who provided remarks at the ceremony.

“We were among the pioneers to launch Baccalaureate degrees. We are very proud to offer four right now, and we had over 1,300 graduates, and the most positive thing that has come from this is the large number of Baccalaureate graduates who are now in graduate programs,” said President Reed. “We are rounding out future managers, supervisors, corporate leaders. This is where the action is, and I do believe this will be part of the transformation of community colleges across the country.”

The articulation agreement is designed to facilitate the transfer of students from Texas Southmost College’s (TSC) Associate of Applied Science Degree programs to South Texas College’s (STC) Bachelor Degree programs. The agreement has been put in place in order to enable the student’s progression to the next level of course work leading to a Baccalaureate degree.

“This agreement between TSC and STC will allow us to build a bridge to higher education across the Valley, from Cameron and Willacy Counties to Hidalgo and Starr Counties,” said TSC President Shannon. “The partnership and this articulation agreement are the first steps of many TSC is taking in response to the Texas legislature’s call for community colleges around the state to offer Bachelor’s degrees.”

All TSC courses completed in the Associate of Applied Science Degree are transferable to STC, and will satisfy the indicated course requirements leading to the first two years of course work in STC’s various Baccalaureate degree programs.

TSC students wishing to transfer must apply for admission with STC and meet all of STC’s entrance requirements. All courses considered for transfer must be completed with a “C” or better for acceptance into any one of STC’s Baccalaureate degrees.
