STC and UTRGV sign 2+2 articulation agreement for transferring students
On Monday Dec. 12, South Texas College and the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley formalized 26 2+2 articulation agreements to provide a seamless transition for students in the Rio Grande Valley.
Recently signed articulation agreements between STC and UTRGV are a testimony to the confidence both institutions have to provide the best education possible for students in the region, according to STC President Dr. Shirley A. Reed.
The institutions have joined together to provide students with a smooth transition between the college and the university. The 26 agreements were signed to create pathways for enrolled students to transfer, and further their educational opportunities at UTRGV. The signing encompassed all four divisions at South Texas College and all seven colleges at UTRGV.
“The genesis of these agreements goes back to the two legacy institutions, we had a great relationship with UT-Pan American and UT-Brownsville,” said President Dr. Shirley A. Reed. “We had 50 different articulation agreements to facilitate transfer for our students, and when UTRGV emerged as a new institution, we signed a general agreement so we could continue the transfer process.”
A year in the making, the agreement creates a seamless pathway that will allow students to move from an associate degree to a bachelor’s degree due in part to the special collaboration between STC and UTRGV. A 2+2 agreement means that students will take two years at South Texas College and finish their remaining two years at UTRGV.
“In June 2015, STC made the commitment to develop articulation agreements program by program,” Dr. Reed continued. “Our concern was the students don’t take the wrong courses, don’t waste time or money; and unless you have been directly involved in developing these agreements, you don’t realize the type of dedication and hard work that went to putting in these agreements together.”
UTRGV is STC’s largest transfer partner. Overall, more than 75 percent of UTRGV graduates in 2015 attended South Texas College. Of incoming students attending the university in the fall, more than 65 percent will have attended STC.
“Today is a momentous day and a historic day for both South Texas College and UTRGV, but most importantly for our community here in the Rio Grande Valley,” said UTRGV Provost Dr. Rodriguez. “We come together as two institutions of higher education to better serve the needs of our students.. Our focus is student success, and expanding their educational opportunities. That is what we are doing today at this very important ceremony.”
