                        <guid>https://news.southtexascollege.edu/stc-fosters-curiosity-by-empowering-tomorrows-scientists/</guid><pp:caseid>650485</pp:caseid><pp:summary><![CDATA[<p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>At STC's Biology summer camp, young scientists dive into a variety of activities that encourage curiosity like learning the basics of lab safety, examining their cells under a microscope and seeing the inner workings of an ecosystem through plant and bacteria growth.&nbsp;</span></p>]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>The South Texas College Biology and Continuing Education departments, combined efforts to successfully launch their annual Biology Explorers youth summer camp, attracting a full house.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>With its kickoff event at the college’s Pecan campus, the week-long camp was designed for elementary and middle-school aged children to embark on a hands-on exploration through the field of biology in a laboratory setting.&nbsp;</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>Maribel Sanchez, a parent from McAllen, Texas, said she learned about the summer camp through its popularity among other parents, which prompted her to get her children involved in a new and exciting experience.&nbsp;</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>"My biggest motivation was exposing my kids to a college setting while they also get to learn and develop new skills in topics that they like. This is our first time participating at STC’s camps, but we’re excited to continue enrolling them in these camps in the future," said Sanchez.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>At the Biology summer camp, young scientists dive into a variety of activities that encourage curiosity like learning the basics of lab safety, examining their cells under a microscope and seeing the inner workings of an ecosystem through plant and bacteria growth.&nbsp;</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>STC Associate Professor of Biology JeanMarie Fors, Ph.D., shares her excitement for the turnout and remarkable growth of the summer camp.&nbsp;</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>“This is the third summer that I help facilitate the biology camp, and it’s a pleasure to see how much it has grown over the years. This year we have a full roster of new and returning children,” said Fors. “Knowing the kids are eager to learn about science within a college setting is exciting.”</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>Biology Explorer Elise Cantu, 12, said she was skeptical about trying something new until the first day opened up a new world of ideas and exciting opportunities that she gets to share with her fellow campers.&nbsp;</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>“At first, I didn’t know what to expect with the camp, but I am loving what we are getting to learn so far and working with the other kids,” Cantu said. “I would love to be a doctor or work in a lab someday, so I am looking forward to all of the lessons they have planned for us, but I might be most excited to take my cool lab coat home.”</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>Upcoming Biology Explorers summer camps will also be held July 8 - 11 at STC’s Starr County and Mid-Valley campuses.&nbsp;</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>For more information on all the camps being offered this summer at STC, visit </span><a href="https://www.southtexascollege.edu/youth-camps/"><span>https://www.southtexascollege.edu/youth-camps/</span></a><span>&nbsp;</span></p>]]></description><pp:quotes><pp:quote>

]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p>The first Friday of October has been celebrated as Manufacturing Day (MFG). This year, South Texas&nbsp;College&nbsp;Tech Campus&nbsp;held&nbsp;its annual event inviting local high school students and engineers to promote&nbsp;careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM).&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>As associate professor&nbsp;Dr.&nbsp;Esmeralda&nbsp;Adame&nbsp;puts it, &ldquo;manufacturing is all around us&rdquo; she said speaking to students&nbsp;from&nbsp;Mission Veterans Memorial High School and Hidalgo ISD.&nbsp;</p><p>&ldquo;It&rsquo;s in the chairs you&rsquo;re sitting on, the&nbsp;TV, your iPhones, the bus you rode&nbsp;on&nbsp;this morning, the list goes on and on because it takes a lot to become&nbsp;an engineer and designer,"&nbsp;said Adame.&nbsp;&ldquo;We have so many&nbsp;things&nbsp;happening and with the collaboration with other companies, we&nbsp;are&nbsp;celebrating&nbsp;this as&nbsp;a&nbsp;manufacturing&nbsp;month.&rdquo;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>Local&nbsp;companies&nbsp;like&nbsp;Cinch&nbsp;Connectivity Solutions&nbsp;and IHC Suspension&nbsp;attended MFG&nbsp;Day&nbsp;where one STC alumni shared his&nbsp;experience as an&nbsp;IHC&nbsp;engineer for&nbsp;automotive&nbsp;drop&nbsp;kits&nbsp;and lift kits.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>&ldquo;We&rsquo;re one of the leaders in lifted trucks,&rdquo; shares Horacio Salinas, IHC manufacturing engineer.&nbsp;&ldquo;As an engineer,&nbsp;I&nbsp;usually&nbsp;bring the&nbsp;concepts&nbsp;to life,&nbsp;so&nbsp;every time&nbsp;a product is&nbsp;changing,&nbsp;I know of&nbsp;it&nbsp;because my department receives the blueprints from GM, Ford or Dodge.&rdquo;&nbsp;</p><p>Salinas credits STC for his path&nbsp;into&nbsp;the STEAM field when&nbsp;beginning his enrollment as a dual credit&nbsp;student in 2015,&nbsp;then&nbsp;graduating from high school in 2017&nbsp;and earning&nbsp;his certificate&nbsp;in&nbsp;Advanced Manufacturing. He&nbsp;then&nbsp;earned&nbsp;his associate&nbsp;and graduated&nbsp;from&nbsp;STC&nbsp;in 2019.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>&ldquo;STC is very helpful because they work with you while you get the experience, and I actually left a university&nbsp;and came back because they&nbsp;were&nbsp;just not as helpful and I&rsquo;m very big on two-year technical schools before you go anywhere else,&rdquo;&nbsp;he shares.&nbsp;</p><p>The event also held a lab tour where students&nbsp;were able to get hands-on experience with manufacturing&nbsp;machines and ask questions from STC professors.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>&ldquo;We want to&nbsp;teach and expose&nbsp;students&nbsp;to&nbsp;the amazing world of manufacturing that exists here in the&nbsp;Valley,&rdquo; said Adame. &ldquo;There are plenty of job opportunities&nbsp;here and a lot of the time students&nbsp;are not aware&nbsp;of&nbsp;[DA1] plastic, metal stamping, CNC&nbsp;(computer numerical control)&nbsp;machining, quality control&nbsp;manufacturing.&nbsp;There&rsquo;s even a local manufacturing company making stick-shifts for&nbsp;Camaros.&rdquo;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>Encouraging&nbsp;the STEAM field&rsquo;s importance also comes with the&nbsp;importance of&nbsp;encouraging&nbsp;women&nbsp;to&nbsp;enter&nbsp;the field.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>&ldquo;Women are&nbsp;multitaskers,&nbsp;and those same skills are needed in the workplace here,&rdquo;&nbsp;said&nbsp;Erika Guerra, STC advanced&nbsp;manufacturing&nbsp;tech instructor.&nbsp;&ldquo;Their interests lie within some of these STEAM and STEM fields.&rdquo;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>While&nbsp;all&nbsp;STC&rsquo;s manufacturing technology professors have&nbsp;made their contributions in the early start of their careers&nbsp;ranging&nbsp;from&nbsp;petroleum to mechanical&nbsp;engineering,&nbsp;Dr. Adame shares&nbsp;her&nbsp;early&nbsp;contributions to the community.&nbsp;</p><p>&ldquo;I contributed to the baseball stadium in&nbsp;Edinburg&nbsp;which&nbsp;used to be home to the Roadrunners but now is a&nbsp;part of UTRGV and I was able to work on floorplans that built&nbsp;the locker&nbsp;rooms,&nbsp;and&nbsp;I was a&nbsp;draftsperson for&nbsp;some time&nbsp;designing buildings&nbsp;with another company,&rdquo; she said.&nbsp;</p><p>Other STC Advanced Manufacturing&nbsp;Technology&nbsp;professors&nbsp;in attendance were&nbsp;Mario&nbsp;A. Olivera&nbsp;and Alberto&nbsp;"Bert&rdquo;&nbsp;Farias&nbsp;and&nbsp;Cinch Connectivity Manager, Rubi Cantu.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>The Tech Campus will hold its next manufacturing event, Wednesday, Oct. 20.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>]]></description><category><![CDATA[news,STEM,stc-homepage,STEM-News]]></category>

                        <guid>https://news.southtexascollege.edu/myth-vs-facts-on-vaccinations/</guid><pp:caseid>450969</pp:caseid><pp:subtitle>Biology Department hosts talk with Dr. Emilie Prot</pp:subtitle><description><![CDATA[<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>The Biology Department held a live stream event called &ldquo;Myth vs Fact: COVID Vaccination&rdquo; on February 11 by Dr. Emilie Prot.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Dr. Emilie Prot is the Regional Medical Director at the Texas Department of Health. Dr. Prot is board certified in public health and general Preventive Medicine. She serves as a committee member on the Task Force of Border Health Officials, mandated by statute (S.B. No. 1680), and a committee member of the Public Health Funding and Policy Committee. She is a faculty member for the residency program in preventive medicine and public health at the Texas State Department of Health and is faculty member for UT Rio Grande Valley Medical School. She is passionate about global health, advocacy, health equity and strives to care for populations in Texas in particular Texas Mexico border region.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>During our seminar, students and community members learned how vaccines work with our immune system to fight and prevent diseases. Dr. Prot described how a vaccine is developed and the phases of clinical trials that it must go through to be approved by the FDA. She described and compared the COVID vaccine candidates and at what phase in clinical trials are they currently in. Dr. Prot explained the technology behind the first two COVID vaccine approved by the FDA for emergency use and listed the reported and expected side effects. She explained who is at risk of getting COVID-19 and therefore are candidates for the COVID-19 vaccines. She shared a National Strategy to Reinforce Confidence in COVID-19 Vaccines. Dr. Prot&rsquo;s final take home message was &ldquo;Vaccine confidence starts with you. Building defenses against COVID-19 is a team effort. Share your reasons for getting vaccinated and encourage others. Do not to forget to wear a facemask. Stay 6ft physical distancing. Wash your hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Stay home when you are sick.                         <title>&#039;Biology of Stress&#039;</title>

                        <guid>https://news.southtexascollege.edu/biology-of-stress/</guid><pp:caseid>450968</pp:caseid><pp:subtitle>Biology, Counseling &amp; Disability Departments partner for live stream event</pp:subtitle><description><![CDATA[<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>The Biology Department partnered with the Counseling and Accessibility Department to bring a live stream event&nbsp;called &ldquo;The Biology of Stress&rdquo; on March 11 by Ms. Sonia Rivera.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Sonia Rivera is native of the Rio Grande Valley and a licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Texas and nationally Certified Rehabilitation Counselor. She has worked as a counselor for South Texas College since February of 2000.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>During our seminar, students and community members learned that stress is a state of mental or emotional tension resulting from very demanding or adverse circumstances. Ms. Rivera explained the biology of stress and explained that stress is a normal response of the body&rsquo;s way of reacting to a condition such as a threat, challenge or physical and psychological barrier.                         <title>Biology Department hosts Impacts of Climate Change</title>

                        <guid>https://news.southtexascollege.edu/impacts-of-climate-change/</guid><pp:caseid>448455</pp:caseid><description><![CDATA[<p><span><span>The Biology Department held a live stream event called "Impacts of Climate Change in the Lower Rio Grande Valley" on April 8 by Dr. Christopher Gabler.</span></span></p><p><span><span>Dr. Gabler leads the Plant Ecology and Sustainability Lab at UTRGV and focuses on global change and finding practical ways to reverse the current rapid decline in biodiversity and ecosystem function. He received his Ph.D. from Rice University in 2012 and held postdoctoral positions at the University of Houston and the USGS National Wetlands Research Center. Dr. Gabler joined the faculty at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in 2016. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the School of Earth, Environmental, and Marine Sciences with a joint appointment in the Department of Biology. Dr. Gabler is also the Program Coordinator for UTRGV's B.S. program in Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems. His research focuses mainly on ecological restoration, climate change, invasive species, and sustainable agriculture, and he works most frequently in coastal habitats, wetlands, forests, and urban agroecosystems.</span></span></p><p><span><span>Students and community members learned about the critical ecological, economic, and social impacts of climate change on the U.S. Gulf Coast people and ecosystems, focusing on the Lower Rio Grande Valley. After an enlightening and reality check that climate change is already affecting our planet and it will get worse, Dr. Gabler spoke about ways to reduce our carbon footprint and otherwise act to help mitigate climate change in the coming decades. He explained that the significant components of carbon footprints are transportation, energy use, food, goods, and services.</span></span></p><p><span><span>Dr. Gabler listed recommendations on what each of us can change in our daily lives that will help reduce our carbon footprint.</span></span></p><ul><li><span><span>Drive less, walk, or bike when feasible. Plan and take fewer trips by minimizing connecting flights or teleconference when possible.</span></span></li><li><span><span>Reduce home energy consumption by setting your thermostat higher in the summer and lower in the winter</span></span></li><li><span><span>Reduce appliance use by hanging your clothes to dry, hand wash dishes, and disconnect devices when they are on standby.</span></span></li><li><span><span>Transition to cleaner energy sources by incorporating on-site generation-solar roofs and choosing cleaner fuels when selecting appliances and energy providers.</span></span></li><li><span><span>Eat less meat by minimizing beef and lamb or eat lower on the food chain.                         <title>Biology Series Creates Awareness on World AIDS Day</title>

                        <guid>https://news.southtexascollege.edu/biology-series-creates-awareness-on-world-aids-day/</guid><pp:caseid>436320</pp:caseid><description><![CDATA[<p>On World AIDS Day, December 1st, the South Texas College Biology Department held a live stream event called &ldquo;Find Your Voice in the Battle for Health on the Border&rdquo; led by Oscar Lopez and Armando Molina.</p><p>Students and community members learned about HIV, how it affects Latinos on the Texas-Mexico border, the stigmas attached to HIV, and where to seek medical attention. Towards the end of the discussion, an HIV test was performed during the live stream for awareness of the process. Additionally, the event was also featured in the local news on December 2nd by KRGV.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p><img alt="" src="https://content.presspage.com/uploads/2206/500_oscarlopez.jpg?x=1614102990371" style="margin: 1px 7px; float: left; width: 200px; height: 200px;" />Oscar Lopez is the CEO and National Policy Director for&nbsp;Poderosos, a national Advocacy and Capacity Building Organization based on the U.S- Mexican border focusing on improving the wellness of the Latinx community.</p><p>Armando Molina serves marginalized populations through education, testing, and counseling. The program is supported by a $2 million National Institute of Health (NIH)&nbsp;funded grant for 5 years (08/01/2020 to 07/31/2025).</p><p>The program will provide support to STC students enrolled in Associate Biology programs to research in biomedical sciences. It provides stipends, tuition, and research and academic advising support to the students. Megan Zamora, Karina Cantu, Natasha Garcia Rodriguez, Viviana Villalobos, and Elias Martinez were selected as the first cohort of students through a competitive selection process. This grant offers STC biology students opportunities to engage in research and a smooth transition to the UTRGV biomedical sciences program.</p><p>The NIH-funded grant is a multi-institutional collaborative effort written by Dr. Sue Anne Chew (PI-UTRGV), Dr. Saraswathy Nair (Co-PI UTRGV), Ruben Reyes (PI-TSC), and Dr. Shima Chaudhary (PI-STC). Imagine an online course that&rsquo;s <i>anything</i> but death by PowerPoint.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>Not only is the video crystal clear, recorded by television-studio-quality cameras. But your professors can demonstrate science experiments up close and in high definition. And, they can solve math problems in real-time, writing on a white board while facing the camera as easy-to-follow notes appear on your screen.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>It&rsquo;s not science fiction. It&rsquo;s South Texas College&rsquo;s new high-tech recording studio &ndash;turning online lectures into an interactive experience that feels almost like sitting in a classroom.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>&ldquo;The student has the same, or, in some cases, even better visuals than they would in a face-to-face course,&rdquo; explains Biology Instructor Dr. Maria Cervantes.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>An 11-year South Texas College vet, Cervantes is known for helping biology faculty land the competitive</span> <a href="https://news.southtexascollege.edu/dr-maria-y-cervantes--/"><span>SEA PHAGE research grant in 2019</span></a><span>. While conducting real research on beating antibiotic-resistant bacteria, STC students discovered a phage with unique DNA, and their work is being featured by two scientific journals.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>The professor&rsquo;s dream for a recording studio started as far back as 2017 when she became chair of the Biology department. Cervantes uses the board a lot when she teaches and is committed to hands-on learning and classroom connection &mdash; especially in her virtual sections.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>&ldquo;So much research shows that students do much, much better in a course where they can see the instructor,&rdquo; says Cervantes, who believes that a fuzzy head floating over a PowerPoint presentation is just not enough.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>Enter STC&rsquo;s brand-new &ldquo;Jag Studio,&rdquo; a state-of-the-art recording facility located on the Pecan campus. The studio opened last November after years of researching, planning and building, employing high-tech equipment to maximize online learning interaction across all disciplines.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>&ldquo;When you see it in action, it&rsquo;s hard to believe,&rdquo; says Dr. Rachel Sale, Dean of Distance Learning. The studio can fit about five people inside with social distancing, and its two large, high-definition screens allow instructors to see both their notes and the participants&rsquo; view simultaneously. With star-quality lighting in the modern, distraction-free studio, the end product is both powerful and professional.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>According to the dean, &ldquo;The cameras are all 4K, like you would expect in a regular television studio.&rdquo;</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>Jag Studio gives instructors a secure, private area to record their lessons. It&rsquo;s designed to be easily sanitized between uses and contains a completely ADA-compliant podium so that professors can stand, sit, or have a wheelchair accommodated.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>There&rsquo;s also an employee at hand in the nearby Distance Learning office to help instructors set up and record. It&rsquo;s touches like these that Cervantes says makes the studio exceptionally user-friendly: &ldquo;They basically press a button, the camera and everything turn on, and it&rsquo;s ready to go.&rdquo;</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>The instructor feels humbled that the idea came to life through the hard work of so many. Fundamental to the project&rsquo;s vision and creation were Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Anahid Petrosian, Interim President Dr. Plummer, and Director of Educational Technologies Dr. Marie Evans. The Educational Technology department provided funding and took care of equipment specs and studio installation. Now supported by Dr. Sale and the Distance Learning department, Jag Studio is a celebration of innovative collaboration.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>&ldquo;It is a true testament of how much all these different departments want to work together to build something that is going to be helpful for the students,&rdquo; beams Cervantes.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>And the best part of all? Location, location, location.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>The studio is right in the middle of campus, which Cervantes believes will encourage broader engagement: &ldquo;It opens up to the idea that it&rsquo;s available to all faculty.&rdquo;</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>So far, about 25 instructors across disciplines have employed the studio to create course lectures, with many more in line for the Spring semester. Meanwhile, the College itself has used the studio to produce professional conference presentations and is currently developing open educational resource videos. From high-quality production to transcription and ADA services, the studio will allow the school to create top-of-the-line learning resources at no cost to students.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>Once the ball gets rolling with recordings, students will be invited to participate in a survey to give feedback on virtual classroom interaction, including ideas on how the school can improve. In the future, students may also be able to access the studio themselves to film class presentations, panels and even debates. And that&rsquo;s only the beginning.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>&ldquo;It&rsquo;s not just about teaching, but reaching out to our community as well,&rdquo; says Cervantes. Community collaborations include a Saturday morning children&rsquo;s program with Pharr Library. Using adorable puppets, STC faculty will produce segments to showcase STEM opportunities to young learners.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>&ldquo;There&rsquo;s a lot of potential with the studio,&rdquo; says the professor. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s just a matter of using our creativity and initiative to put some of these ideas into motion.&rdquo;</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>In the coming semester, Cervantes will be a part of Distance Learning&rsquo;s workshops to train faculty to use the equipment. And once the studio gets going, the professor knows that interest will take off. Case in point: as part of their research for the project, Cervantes and the team visited Texas A&M University, which recently created a recording space of its own.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>&ldquo;When they started the studio, they had about 50 faculty use it,&rdquo; recalls Cervantes. &ldquo;By the end of their first year, after word got out... they had over 1,200 people sign up!&rdquo;</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>The professor is awed that the dream to help online learners has been championed by so many colleagues. She confides that the studio has turned out even better than her initial idea, thanks to the College&rsquo;s unbeatable teamwork.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>&ldquo;It took the specialties and the funding capabilities of several different departments for this to happen,&rdquo; says Sale. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s just another example of what STC is known for&hellip; [and] why we were able to adapt with COVID. Everybody works together.&rdquo;</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>Plus, the timing for Jag Studio&rsquo;s first full semester couldn&rsquo;t be more perfect.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>According to Cervantes, &ldquo;Now, because of the pandemic and having most of our courses online, this tool is coming to play right at a time when we need it most.&rdquo;</span></span></span></p>]]></content:encoded><pp:quotes><pp:quote>

                        <title>STC Biology Department SEA-PHAGES Students and Faculty Publication Contributions</title>

The first fourteen authors are also students that worked on the annotation as part of the Spring 2020 Biology 1407 HHMI SEA PHAGES bioinformatics&nbsp;course2.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>The first year of SEA-PHAGES course at STC was very engaging as the faculty&nbsp;were&nbsp;busy not only teaching and guiding students but also publishing scholarly work. SEA-PHAGE faculty across the country collaborated in the annotation and publication of&nbsp;Mycobacterium&nbsp;phage BodEinwohner17, Complete Genome in the&nbsp;Genbank. (Accession number MN945900)1.&nbsp;</p><p>SEA-PHAGES Administration&nbsp;organized a summer workshop and invited SEA -PHAGES&nbsp;faculty to develop online teaching resources&nbsp;for&nbsp;teaching&nbsp;bioinformatics&nbsp;in&nbsp;Fall 2020. The&nbsp;necessity for&nbsp;this workshop was driven by&nbsp;the&nbsp;current&nbsp;COVID-19 pandemic. The teaching resources&nbsp;developed by&nbsp;the&nbsp;faculty team&nbsp;were&nbsp;published in QUBES&nbsp;(Quantitative Undergraduate Biology Education and Synthesis), a resource for education, research, and collaboration in quantitative biology.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>Two SEA-PHAGES faculty from the STC Biology department,&nbsp;Dr. Thomas Ndolo and Dr. Shima Chaudhary,&nbsp;volunteered&nbsp;to&nbsp;collaboratively develop online teaching materials over&nbsp;the summer 2020&nbsp;session.&nbsp;The completed&nbsp;resources were&nbsp;then&nbsp;made available to all&nbsp;faculty&nbsp;for use in their courses. The SEA-PHAGES&nbsp;team&nbsp;showcased&nbsp;these resources prominently on the program website to facilitate peer-review and&nbsp;promote&nbsp;recognition&nbsp;to those individuals that aided in the development of these&nbsp;materials.&nbsp;&nbsp;The workshop focused on&nbsp;the&nbsp;following areas of the SEA-PHAGE course:&nbsp;</p><p>1. Develop Teaching Resources&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>SEA-PHAGE faculty&nbsp;expressed interest&nbsp;in&nbsp;developing&nbsp;shared teaching resources,&nbsp;particularly for the Phage Genomics/Bioinformatics component.&nbsp;Such shared resources&nbsp;are&nbsp;invaluable&nbsp;given that Phage Genomics&nbsp;was&nbsp;likely to feature prominently&nbsp;during the&nbsp;upcoming academic year.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>2. ]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span><span><span><span>Above all else, self-motivation and perseverance are the key elements that have enabled Yanely Moreno to succeed as she looks ahead to a future medical career.</span></span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span><span>Yanely started her education at South Texas College in fall 2019. She is currently pursuing a degree in Biology with the hopes of one day entering a career as a Physician Assistant (PA).</span></span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span><span>STC provided her with a dual enrollment program that helped her get a head start on a college education while still enrolled as a student at Roma High School, Yanely said.</span></span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span><span>&ldquo;Because of this, the beginning my college experience was a smooth transition into higher education,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;Approaching college with organizational skills is what helps me maintain order. Becoming a PA has been a goal of mine for years now, and keeping that final goal in mind is what keeps me going every day.&rdquo;</span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span>The Associate of Science Degree with a field of study in Biology offers students the opportunity for many exciting career opportunities available in the biological sciences. Most of the career areas listed require training beyond the Associate of Science degree, and some will require a post-graduate degree, and include careers in Agriculture, Dentistry, Health Sciences, Medicine, and many more.</span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span>As a student at STC, Yanely says she has stayed active while employed as a direct wage employee with Student Activities, as well as an officer with Student Government Association (SGA). She is also a recent graduate with the Student Leadership Academy.</span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span>&ldquo;My peers should keep in mind that perseverance will help them succeed, as well has help them focus on their ultimate goal in life to improve persistence,&rdquo; Yanely said. &ldquo;New college students should have self-discipline because as we grow older, and more independence is given, self-motivation is required to get things done. Prioritization is also a very mature skill that is needed for college, and life in general.&rdquo;</span></span></span></span></p>]]></content:encoded><pp:quotes><pp:quote>

]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span><span><span>Despite a change in career plans, Lorna Montemayor says success in college has always been about striving to become better.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>Lorna is currently pursuing an Associate of Applied Science Cybersecurity Specialist. Initially entering STC as a dual-enrollment student while attending Valley View High School, Lorna began at STC after graduation in 2019.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>Harboring a lifelong fascination with art, Lorna said she began college with the hopes of one day entering a career as a graphic designer. As she took her classes at STC and began to research the job market however she became drawn to careers in IT, she said.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>&ldquo;STC was the ideal place to start. Not only was it financial beneficial, but the college also had professors and deans who truly wanted me to succeed,&rdquo; Lorna said. &ldquo;I started in high school and was happy to find teachers who were compassionate and caring when I first started a few of my basic classes.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>&ldquo;In addition, STC helped me grow as a person by helping me start reaching out and seeing the different career plans I could be taking due to the advice of thoughtful professors,&rdquo; Lorna said. &ldquo;In addition, becoming a Cybersecurity Specialist seemed ideal for my personality due to always wanting to solve problems and help those around me if I can, so I began the process of enrolling from there.&rdquo;</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>The Cybersecurity Specialist Associate of Applied Science and Certificate degrees are designed for students interested in entering the field of cybersecurity technologies.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>The degree prepares students to learn practices that are designed to protect networks, computers, programs and data from attack, damage, or unauthorized access. Cybersecurity Specialists at STC are trained in computer security, installing security software, network monitoring for security breaches, and responding to cyber-attacks.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>&ldquo;Success in college &ndash; that&rsquo;s what everyone wants but most see it as hard to achieve, and it can be but they shouldn&rsquo;t get downhearted from grades and exams. We all have our faults but we also have our strengths, follow your strengths and try to adapt to your faults,&rdquo; Lorna said.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>&ldquo;My message to my peers is to do their research on their respective careers and find people within the industry who can help you with information about the career plan ahead,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;In addition, before enrolling in a class, look into the professors to see how your semester will look like. Lastly, start looking into interning near the area. The job market is a competition, and if you don&rsquo;t have any experience in the field, then another competitor could get the respective job just from interning in a minimal tech field.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>&ldquo;Learning doesn&rsquo;t end with college, but it&rsquo;s up to you to continue learning after your degree is in your grasp,&rdquo; she said.</span></span></span></p>]]></content:encoded><pp:quotes><pp:quote>

]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span><span>Soon students at South Texas College pursuing a bachelor&rsquo;s degree in the Computer & Information Technologies Program (CITP) will have the opportunity to improve their ability for employment in the IT industry by graduating with both a bachelor&rsquo;s degree and a professional certificate from Google.</span></span></p>

<p><span><span>A $10,000 grant by Jobs for the Future (JFF) allows students in the CITP program the opportunity to complete a Google IT Support Professional Certificate while enrolled in the bachelor&rsquo;s degree program.</span></span></p>

<p><span><span>IT support professionals play an essential role in the lives of people across the world. From installing software and configuring network infrastructure to supporting cloud computing solutions and protecting computer systems from hackers, these professionals are an integral component in every industry.</span></span></p>

<p><span><span>&ldquo;The certificate impacts students by creating new career pathways,&rdquo; said Saeed Molki, Program Chair from the South Texas College Computer Science Department. &ldquo;It can enhance an individual&rsquo;s career by opening doors for career advancement.&rdquo;</span></span></p>

<p><span><span>Google, in collaboration with JFF, provides grants to community colleges in California, Colorado, Illinois, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Texas, and Wisconsin. The grants assist with the integration of the Google IT Support Professional Certificate into the college&rsquo;s IT curriculum and align with skills sought by employers.</span></span></p>

<p><span><span>&ldquo;Having both a Bachelor Degree and a Google IT Support Professional Certificate shows potential employers that our graduates are truly well rounded and ready to be a productive members of their team starting day one of their employment,&rdquo; said Dr. David Plummer, Executive Vice-President for Educational Programming and Student Achievement at South Texas College.</span></span></p><p><span><span>South Texas College is one of 100 community colleges across the country and four in the state of Texas currently offering the certificate program.</span></span></p><p><span><span>An initiative of Grow with Google, the certificate program is offered in partnership with Coursera, a leading online learning platform for higher education. The Google IT Support Professional Certificate course focuses on mastering fundamental skills in the IT workforce, including troubleshooting, customer service, networking, operating systems, system administration, and security.</span></span></p><p><span><span>The coursework includes a dynamic combination of interactive learning strategies and assessments, including video lectures, practice exercises, and supplemental reading, to support and enhance the learner&rsquo;s information technology skills.</span></span></p><p><span><span>The certificate program is only available to students in the Fall 2020 semester as part of the CITP 3306 Internet/Intranet Server Integration curriculum. After successfully finishing the Google IT Support Professional Certificate program, students are eligible to receive a scholarship between $200 to $300.</span></span></p><p><span><span>In preparation for this new offering, the faculty and lab assistants from the Computer Science department have completed the requirements to earn their own Google IT Support Professional Certificate.</span></span></p><p><span><span>&ldquo;The faculty believes that students will be very excited and enthusiastic about the opportunity to gain credibility, knowledge, and skills,&rdquo; said Nicholas Hinojosa, Assistant Program Chair from the South Texas College Computer Science Department.</span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span>The Bachelor of Applied Technology Degree (BAT) in Computer and Information Technologies (CIT) prepares students for successful careers in the field of CIT. Coursework balances between theoretical and technical competencies associated with the CIT profession to prepare graduates for many demands placed on CIT professionals. The degree prepares students with relevant, technical knowledge of CIT practices, to provide solutions for real-world problems and technical support for computer-based information systems. ]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p>South Texas College symbolically has begun distributing degree covers, as well as cap and gown, and yard signs to graduating students beginning with the Bachelor&rsquo;s Program Monday morning.</p>

<p>Students are being contacted via INVITATION ONLY to come and pick up the degree covers commemorating their hard work, according to STC staff and faculty. The Office of Admissions and Records continues to review graduation applications and confer degrees, so graduates should expect to receive their diplomas in the mail by mid to late June.</p>

<p>&ldquo;The challenge is, since we have close to 2,000 traditional graduates or so, we cannot have them come in at the same time, so it was easier to do the Bachelor program graduates first,&rdquo; said Elibariki Nguma, Director of Student Activities and Wellness.</p>

<p>Dual Credit Programs has coordinated with partnering school districts to distribute degrees to their graduates.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Beginning tomorrow (Tuesday) district wide we are going to start distributing degree (covers) to other students,&rdquo; Nguma said. &ldquo;We cannot invite everybody the same day so students will be notified when to come in through their STC email. Since we also have pantry operations at the same time, we need to organize everything accordingly.</p>

<p>Distribution is taking place concurrently at STC&rsquo;s three campuses in Weslaco and Starr County as well as Pecan. Students are being asked via email invitation only to stop by and pick up their degree covers at scheduled times.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Students need to get an invite to come to campus through email telling them when to come on a certain day to come and pick up their degree,&rdquo; he said.</p>

<p>Faculty with STC&rsquo;s Bachelor programs were on hand in full regalia on Monday morning to distribute degrees to students.</p><p>&ldquo;We know that all of our students are always looking forward to this moment, to be able to walk and receive their diploma,&rdquo; said Dr. Ali Esmaeili, Dean for Math, Science, IT, and Bachelor Programs. &ldquo;We know this a dream come true for our students and unfortunately due to COVID-19, we still tried our best to make this celebratory for them as well as respect and honor them.</p><p>&ldquo;We are hoping that by being here with our cap and gown and giving them their diploma cover that they at least feel comfortable with the fact that they achieved their goal,&rdquo; Dr. Esmaeili said.</p><p>South Texas College still wants to plan a virtual commencement for graduating students by this summer. The college says that in the coming weeks, it plans to send information to students via email on how to submit personal photos and messages to be included in the ceremony.</p><p>Once those submissions are in, third-party company will include student photos on a web slide along with a personal message printed with the students&rsquo; name, degree, field of study, and honors.</p><p>&ldquo;We are very pleased to have the opportunity to offer our students a virtual graduation ceremony and wish all graduates the best in their future endeavors,&rdquo; said STC Registrar and Director of Student Records and Registrar Cindy Blanco.</p>]]></description><category><![CDATA[news,STEM-News,STEM]]></category>

]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>With hard hats come hard challenges&hellip; It&rsquo;s all part of the job.</p>

<p>But for the mechanical engineers tasked with solving some of the world&rsquo;s toughest technological problems &mdash; from smartphones to submarines to <em>rocket ships</em> &mdash; it's as much about <em>passion</em> as it is about perspiration.</p>

<p>&ldquo;You always have a different problem, so it&rsquo;s a challenge,&rdquo; says South Texas College alumnus Efrain Delgado, now a customer support DUV engineer II for ASML, one of the world&rsquo;s leading manufacturers of computer-chip-making equipment.</p>

<p>ASML&rsquo;s clients include Intel and Samsung, who make microchips that go into virtually everything &mdash; from robotic arms to the device you&rsquo;re reading this article on. For the past three years, it has been the STC grad&rsquo;s job to make sure the complex chip-making machines are running in top shape.</p>

<p>It&rsquo;s a fast-paced job that entails analyzing data, troubleshooting problems, making repairs and performing upgrades. Delgado loves the focus on rigorous critical thinking, and looking back, he traces his passion for mechanical engineering to his start at South Texas College.</p>

<p>&ldquo;My story is actually funny because when I was in high school, I wasn&rsquo;t really a &lsquo;school person,&rsquo;&rdquo; recalls Delgado, who took a four-month break before dipping his toe in at STC for one semester. Not yet convinced, he moved north to earn money in the oil fields, but realized that wasn&rsquo;t the right path for him either.</p><p>He knew the answer to his future was back at South Texas College, so he retraced his steps. With the help of his advisors, an innovative plan began to emerge. He decided to pursue his passion for math and science through STC&rsquo;s engineering program.</p><p>&ldquo;That&rsquo;s when I applied myself to school,&rdquo; says Delgado. &ldquo;It was the smart thing to go to a community college, then transfer to a university to save some money.&rdquo;</p><p>The more he explored engineering, the more certain he became that it would be the foundation for his future. But with six distinct engineering tracks available through STC&rsquo;s versatile program &mdash; civil, electrical, computer, chemical, petroleum, and mechanical &mdash; an important choice remained.</p><p>Citing its elegant combination of hard physics and open innovation, Delgado gravitated toward mechanical engineering. For an independent-minded student, the program represented a place not only to apply his skills, but also to satisfy his yearning for exploration.</p><p>&ldquo;I&rsquo;ve always been a curious person,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo;If you have the desire to learn and create new things, that&rsquo;s basically engineering, and that&rsquo;s what caught my eye.&rdquo;</p><p>Many of STC&rsquo;s mechanical engineering classes are project-based, and Delgado particularly remembers enjoying the labs involving bridge-building and the analysis of force. Other highlights included designing machines and tools using state-of-the-art equipment like 3D printers, spectrometers, and charge-to-mass ratio apparatuses.</p><p>Another game-changer for Delgado was the one-on-one attention he received.</p><p>Delgado remembers having energetic and engaged professors at STC &mdash; most memorably Dr. Guanghua Xu, who presides over some of the department&rsquo;s most challenging physics classes. &ldquo;He will take his time and explain things to you in detail and make sure you understand everything.&rdquo;</p><p>According to Delgado&rsquo;s favorite professor, the abstract concepts in his physics classes don&rsquo;t always come easy. In fact, they often require a totally new way of thinking and studying.</p><p>&ldquo;Efrain did well in the transition and took on the challenges of solving various complicated questions,&rdquo; beams Xu, who was proud to see his student ace his classes and venture on to achieve his goals. &ldquo;I am so honored to be a very small part of his success.</p><p>&ldquo;As an educator, his success also makes me feel that my efforts are worthwhile.&rdquo;</p><p>One benefit to South Texas College&rsquo;s small classes was the inherent camaraderie between engineering students. To help each other see different perspectives, the students would hang out, do homework, and study for tests together. For Delgado, that connectedness would prove invaluable.</p><p>&ldquo;The classes are really hard,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo;If you try to work by yourself, sometimes you can get stuck.&rdquo;</p><p>The group&rsquo;s favorite study spot? STC&rsquo;s Centers for Learning Excellence, of course.</p><p>&ldquo;You could just go in there and grab a table,&rdquo; he recalls about the comfortable atmosphere. And if the study group&rsquo;s collective brainpower ever floundered, they had options. &ldquo;Whenever we had problems with some homework, the tutor would help us out.&rdquo;</p><p>According to Delgado, the program&rsquo;s &ldquo;connected&rdquo; philosophy has always started at the top. As a student, he remembers being approached by the head of the department, Dr. Enriqueta Cortez, with information about a STEM scholarship that would help cover his two years at STC. The gesture was routine to Cortez, now the Assistant Dean for Math, Science & Bachelor Programs, but vital to Delgado&rsquo;s higher education and future.</p><p>&ldquo;It gave me a big sum of money to help with my tuition,&rdquo; says the grateful grad.</p><p>When it comes to student support, Cortez says it&rsquo;s a team effort, involving deans, faculty, and success specialists, all working in harmony to help students like Delgado overcome challenges and succeed.</p><p>&ldquo;We do our very best to help guide them through their educational experience,&rdquo; says Cortez. &ldquo;I am extremely happy to learn that Mr. Efrain Delgado benefited from these efforts.&rdquo;</p><p>When Cortez started as the Physical Science Department Chair in 2008, the program had 307 declared engineering majors. Fast-forward to this past fall, and that number has nearly <em>quadrupled</em> to 1,110. She&rsquo;s proud of how the program has grown, and how the College continues to help aspiring engineers reach their goals.</p><p>&ldquo;At South Texas College, every student is important to us.&rdquo;</p><p>It was that high-touch support that helped Delgado excel in his studies at STC, and, eventually, make the leap to UTRGV.</p><p>&ldquo;I was well prepared,&rdquo; says Delgado, whose credits all transferred without a hitch. More importantly, he was well prepared for his new program, having already developed the skill set to use math, analysis, and teamwork to solve real-world problems.</p><p>&ldquo;With my knowledge,&rdquo; he says, &ldquo;I was ready to start on my engineering career.&rdquo;</p><p>Delgado&rsquo;s seamless transfer process highlights a point of pride for South Texas College, according to current Department Chair Dr. Ravindra Nandigam. Thanks to strong articulation agreements with institutions like UTRGV and Texas A&M, Kingsville, the engineering programs &ldquo;provide our majors avenues for a seamless transfer into four-year degree programs.&rdquo;</p><p>Delgado was not only prepared when he got to UTRGV &shy;&mdash; he also was <em>ahead of the game</em>. He earned his bachelor&rsquo;s degree in mechanical engineering in just two years, and soon after landed his dream job with ASML.</p><p>Since then, he&rsquo;s been problem-solving all over the country, and has even made trips to Asia. &ldquo;They send me all over the place!&rdquo; says the proud Jaguar grad, who hopes to be a lead engineer one day.</p><p>Though his home base has moved from McAllen to Austin, Delgado says that STC will always be in his history and in his heart.</p><p>&ldquo;It&rsquo;s a good college, and the right first step to take for your career.&rdquo;</p>]]></content:encoded><pp:quotes><pp:quote>

]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>For the first time in 14 years, South Texas College has received a significant grant directly from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support students in STEM fields.</p>

<p>NSF awarded $649,369 as part of its Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (S-STEM) grant to provide scholarships to two cohorts of 20 undergraduate students pursuing an associate degree in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, and Physics.</p>

<p>STC&rsquo;s Board of Trustees approved the grant at its regular board meeting on Jan. 28. The funding period for the grant will be from Jan. 1 2020 to Dec. 31, 2024.</p>

<p>&ldquo;The project aims to increase student persistence, retention, transfer, and graduation in STEM fields by linking scholarships with structured student professional development activities,&rdquo; said Dr. Virginia Champion, Executive Director of Resource Development, Management and Compliance. &ldquo;Resources available to students will include faculty mentoring, tutoring, undergraduate research experiences, internships, and participation in discipline-specific conferences.&rdquo;</p><p>Assistance for this grant came from the combined efforts from STC&rsquo;s Department of Resource</p><p>Development, Management and Compliance and the college&rsquo;s Division for Math, Science, and Bachelor Programs. Both provided professional development for faculty as well as for grant development officers who focused on developing strong proposals for the NSF grants.</p><p>Dr. Ali Esmaeili, Dean of STC&rsquo;s Math, Science, and Bachelor Programs, said the division benefitted from training conducted by the college&rsquo;s Grant Training Center specifically its Designing Winning National Science Foundation (NSF) Proposals in 2018.</p><p>&ldquo;The grant will foster student success by providing educational opportunities that enable a seamless transfer to advanced degrees,&rdquo; Dr. Esmaeili said. &ldquo;It will provide an effective support structure that will promote persistence, educational attainment, academic achievement, as well as personal and professional growth.&rdquo;</p>]]></content:encoded><pp:quotes><pp:quote>

                        <title>Students square off in annual high school programming contest</title>

At the end of the day, among the top five teams who were recognized as victorious, four were drawn from students of STC&rsquo;s own dual enrollment computer science classrooms!</p>

<p>Hosted by UTRGV Computer Science Department faculty member Gustavo Dietrich, the annual competition is an exhibition of problem-solving prowess, programming skills, and time management. Students are tasked with tackling ten programming challenges of increasing complexity in a period of only two hours and are awarded points for each solution that successfully solves a previously unseen judges&rsquo; set of input data. This year&rsquo;s challenges included problems such as writing programs to identify triangles given triples of side lengths, and calculating a user&rsquo;s cell phone bill based on daily usage data.</p>

<p>At the end of the day, despite many of them competing for the first time against veteran teams, the 2<sup>nd</sup>, 3<sup>rd</sup>, 4<sup>th</sup>, and 5<sup>th</sup> place spots were filled with teams of students pulled from the classrooms of Computer Science department faculty members Ernesto Gonzalez at Sharyland HS, Jose Jaramillo at Sharyland Pioneer HS, and Lucian Silcox and Nicolas Gutierrez at the STC Pecan campus. The first place spot went to the team from Edinburg North HS, sponsored by Miguel Ramirez, with a stunning performance! <p><img alt="" src="//content.presspage.com/uploads/2206/500_alumni.png?x=1583439543565" style="width: 346px; height: 400px; margin: 5px; float: left;" />Five years ago, I wrote my first line of code in C++ making a single line of text display on my computer, &ldquo;Hello World&rdquo;. Since then, I have had opportunities that have propelled me forward not only as a programmer but also as a contributor to society. I obtained my high school diploma from Thelma Salinas STEM ECHS at La Joya ISD as top of my high school class, and also at the same time obtained my Associate&rsquo;s degree in Computer Science from South Texas College. South Texas College in partnership with La Joya ISD has given me the opportunity to reach my dreams and career goals in the area of Computer Science. I then continued my education acquiring a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley; in addition, I have also experienced two internships dealing with autonomous motion planning projects. In motion planning the idea is to solve the problem by finding a valid path for a movable, non-static object from a start to goal configuration by generating random samples to form a roadmap then extract the best valid path.</p>

<p>In addition, throughout my tenure as a full-time Computer Engineering student, I have had the chance to work on several different projects such as, using machine learning to detect firearms and also converting an old car to an electric vehicle, and learn various skills making me a more well-rounded candidate overall. Graduating this May, I have had the honor of working at Boeing as a Software Engineer with not only my fellow colleagues from high school and university, but also dear close friends of mine, Leonel Pena and Brandon Martinez. Not only was I offered a position with Boeing in Mesa, I was also offered similar positions at Boeing in St. Louis, Lockheed Martin in Denver, Wells Fargo in Raleigh, and others. At the age of 20, I have accomplished more than I ever could&rsquo;ve imagined, and I am excited about what my career has in store.</p><h2><strong>Brandon Martinez</strong></h2><p><img alt="" src="//content.presspage.com/uploads/2206/500_brandon.png?x=1583439630509" style="width: 398px; height: 400px; margin: 5px; float: left;" />Education has always been a huge aspect of my family, even being a first-generation college graduate. My parents and siblings always supported me growing up and pushed me to always strive for greatness. Early in life I never really knew what I wanted to do after high school, my brother joined the Air Force after graduating high school and my sister was unable to continue to college as she started a family after her graduation. It wasn&rsquo;t until joining extracurricular activities in high school that I found a passion for engineering. Afterward, in the summer of 2015, I was accepted into an Undergraduate Research Assistant internship with Parasol Laboratory under Texas A&M where I developed a strong passion for Computer Science. I would later be invited to return in the Summers of 2016 and 2017 as a mentor for other interns because the department was impressed with my performance in my first Summer internship. I graduated with an Associate of Computer Science in May 2016 from South Texas College before even graduating High School, and went on to receive my Bachelor of Computer Science two years later in December of 2018 at UTRGV.</p><p>Afterward, I have had a strong desire to become a teacher for a couple of years to help students reach their goals like I had, but in February of 2019, I was offered a full-time position as a Software Engineer at The Boeing Company in Mesa, Arizona. Currently, I just reached my 1- year anniversary at the Boeing Company and have really enjoyed every minute of it. I have gotten the opportunity to work with a lot of very experienced individuals that have helped me grow as an engineer while also working on a lot of different things I would have never imagined I would be working on. Thanks to the opportunities that La Joya ISD and South Texas College has offered me in high school, I was able to save a lot of money and graduate 2-3 years faster than usual. Additionally, I was able to obtain a job that changed mine and my family&rsquo;s economic situation in less than a year at the age of 20, thus allowing me to give back to my parents just how I always hoped I would be able to for everything they did for me. I hope to gather a great amount of experience and wisdom to later come back and help students be successful and reach for their goals.</p><h2><strong>Leonel Pena</strong></h2><p><img alt="" src="//content.presspage.com/uploads/2206/500_leonel.png?x=1583439747431" style="width: 290px; height: 400px; margin: 5px; float: left;" />Growing up, I never really knew what I would end up doing career-wise, but it wasn&rsquo;t until I reached high school that I found my calling towards Computer Science. Thelma Salinas STEM ECHS really gave me the opportunity to save time and money by advancing my college credit/hours because of their partnership with South Texas College. Because of this partnership, I qualified for two internships that really gave me the experience to stand out in the crowd. The two internships really allowed me to get ahead of the curve and graduate with a Bachelor&rsquo;s of Science in Computer Science from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and acquire a Software Engineer position at The Boeing Company. I was also offered a top position at Lockheed Martin, one in Boulder CO and one in Littleton CO. I believe that the opportunities provided to me by my parents, my school, and teachers all allowed me to arrive to this point where I have more than doubled my family&rsquo;s income at the young age of 20 years old and have a rewarding job as well.                         <title>STC students in the SEA-PHAGES program discover novel Microbacterium Phage</title>

                        <guid>https://news.southtexascollege.edu/stc-students-in-the-sea-phages-program-discover-novel-microbacterium-phage/</guid><pp:caseid>380273</pp:caseid><description><![CDATA[<p><img alt="" src="//content.presspage.com/uploads/2206/500_seaphage.png?x=1583439229360" style="width: 253px; height: 309px; margin: 5px; float: left;" />Biology major students of The Science Education Association-Phage Hunters Advancing Genomic and Evolutionary Science (SEA-PHAGES) program at STC are achieving exceptional success in their quest to discover bacteriophages. As a part of the 12<sup>th</sup> cohort of the program, STC becomes one of the two institutions selected from Texas for the year 2019 -2020.</p>

<p>The program is divided into a two-semester course in which students hunt for bacteriophage in their first semester. A bacteriophage is a type of virus that infects bacteria. By the end of the first-semester student not only have to isolate bacteriophage from the environmental soil samples but also must purify and submit for electron microscopy imaging and submit DNA for archiving and sequencing. After isolating their phage, students have the privilege of naming it. Then, the same student cohort moves to the next semester and carries out gene annotation. Gene annotation is a process where the gene is analyzed for their start and stop codons, and protein function.</p>

<p>Amazingly, the first batch of 14 students in this course achieved the success that is totally unheard of in this program. Generally, 1 to 2 purified viruses are isolated for first-timers in the program. Our students were able to obtain not 2 but <strong>12 bacteriophages</strong> of bacterial host <em>Microbacterium foliorum</em> B-24224 SEA!</p>

<p>Also, it came as a pleasant surprise when we heard from the program director of the SEA-PHAGES program that <em>Microbacterium</em> Phage <em>&ldquo;</em>Delagarza&rdquo; is a singleton Phage and that is relatively new as not much is known about the characteristics of the genome of singleton phages. &ldquo;Delagarza&rdquo; phage was named by Daniela De La Garza in honor of her father.</p>

<p>Several studies have recognized the importance of research experience during undergrad education. Students with research experience have a higher chance of achieving academic success, learn to work in a team and acquire skills necessary to go into graduate school. Under the guidance and mentorship of Dr. Thomas Ndolo, SEA-PHAGES students have transformed from mere high school students to scientists. The skill and experience they are getting in this program will help them achieve unprecedented academic and career success in the future. These students are also on their way to publish in prestigious journals reporting the discovery of new phages.</p>]]></description><category><![CDATA[STEM,STEM-News]]></category>

The paper appeared in the November 2019 issue of Current Research in Material Chemistry. Both Larissa and Mariela joined Dr. M.S. Zaman in this review research on Polymorphic Crystals. Their work has led to a conference presentation titled &ldquo;Polymorphic Crystals in Medicine, A Review&rdquo; at the annual conference of UTRGV School of Medicine Research Symposium in September 2019, and a full-length manuscript as mentioned above. This work was a collaboration with Dr. Bidisha Sengupta of Stephen F. Austin State University, Nacogdoches, TX and Dr. Pradeep Sengupta of University of Calcutta, India.Ms. Barroso is expected to graduate from STC in Fall 2020 and plans to continue her education at UTRGV in the areas of Biomedical Sciences.                         <title>Green Beetles under the Microscope</title>

                        <guid>https://news.southtexascollege.edu/green-beetles-under-the-microscope/</guid><pp:caseid>380278</pp:caseid><description><![CDATA[<p>If you ask most people, they would say that almost all species of animals are already known -except for a handful at the bottom of the ocean or deep in the jungles. A group of students at South Texas College knows that isn&rsquo;t true. They are working on a project with Dr. David Robacker at the Weslaco campus to identify new species of beetles from Mexico. Every week on Friday afternoon students from the <em>Dual Enrollment Medical Science Academy (DEMSA)</em> gather in a laboratory with their microscopes to dissect and examine green-, white- and red-striped jewel scarabs that live in montane pine forests all over Mexico. Right now, and since the species was first described scientifically more than 150 years ago, these beetles have borne the name <em>Chrysina adelaida</em>. Members of this genus <em>Chrysina</em> comprise a group that includes species from Texas and Arizona all the way through Central America to Ecuador. Many of the species are metallic gold or silver, but the species in Mexico are mainly green. Right now there are about 120 known species according to experts Dave Hawks (Riverside, CA) and Jose Monzon Sierra (Guatemala City, Guatemala), but everyone who loves these magnificent insects believes there are many more waiting to be recognized. Most of these probably live in remote mountains where roads don&rsquo;t exist and scientists rarely go. But our students know that some new species may be right under our noses.</p>

<p>Last year, students Norma Barrientos, Brianna Miranda, Naidely Castillo, and Esmer Aguilar began the work and took it to a point where emerging evidence implicated one particular population (sorry, can&rsquo;t say where due to proprietary considerations) as different from nominate <em>C. adelaida</em> in central Mexico. Most of those students have since moved on to new adventures. Enter current team leader Naidely Castillo and fellow students Alejandra Escobedo, Nathan Martinez, Galilea Casas, and Guadelupe Martinez who plow through genitalic microdissections with ease to look for morphological differences that distinguish populations from different places as probable different species. The premise of the work is that if male genitalic capsules and female genicalic plates differ between beetles from different places, they must be different species. This idea is based on a long-held tenet called mechanical isolation that means different species may have different genitalic structures that prevent them from mating with each other because they simply don&rsquo;t fit together during copulation.</p>

<p>So, are there any morphological differences? The students can tell you that it is hard to discern by looking so we turn to careful quantitative methods. Math always seems to be the answer. Using a powerful dissecting microscope equipped with a built-in camera system (courtesy of the STC Biology Department), the students obtain images precise to tenths of a millimeter and determine the sizes and angles of the genitalic structures that simply could not be measured another way. Naidely has witnessed the results for 6 males from the nominate population compared with 7 from the study population and she can attest. &ldquo;Yes, we can see that they are different&rdquo; referring to males from the two groups. Statistical analysis of the data confirms what she observed. &ldquo;It is exciting to realize we are discovering new species that no one else even knows about&rdquo;.</p>

<p>There is still a lot of work to do but the research is progressing quickly to a conclusion &ndash; maybe by the end of spring semester 2020. &ldquo;The reward is knowing we are doing science and seeing that these beetles are different, and then that the species we are discovering will get a name that will last forever&rdquo;, says Naidely. Indeed, the students themselves will get to suggest a name that will become part of the legacy of <em>Chrysina</em> taxonomy.</p>]]></description><category><![CDATA[STEM,STEM-News]]></category>

]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p>Mr. Doney received a B.S. in Geology, a M.S. in Geosciences from the University of Louisiana at Monroe, and attended a Ph.D. program at Michigan State University. His graduate-level course work includes several courses in geology, biology, zoology, and botany, and his expertise is in the field of Paleontology. He has been teaching geology and physical science courses at South Texas College since 2006. Prior to the STC teaching appointment, he taught courses in geology, physical science, integrated science, computer science and lithic technology at other educational institutions.</p>

<p>Mr. Doney has over 50 years of geology field experience. His love for the geological field trips began at the age of 4 when he accompanied his father, a geology professor, on a field trip. Currently, Mr. Doney takes numerous field-trips each year in New Mexico, Colorado, and Texas. Each semester, he conducts field trips for his Historical Geology classes to South Padre Island during which the students discuss the geological history of the island, investigate different depositional environments, study the cross-bedding in the sand of the sand dunes, and collect pumice, magnetite sand, and &ldquo;future fossils.&rdquo;</p>

<p>His current research interests are the Eocene and Oligocene age sediments of the gulf coast, including those in Starr and Zapata Counties. He is especially interested in the <em>Cyathodendron</em> fossils, Eocene age tree ferns of South Texas. Additional research lies in the gravel of the Rio Grande (rocks, fossils, and mineral), and has been collaborating with a UTRGV professor to identify the different types and origins. Mr. Doney has also done extensive research on modern and fossil sharks (mainly teeth). Mr. Doney started conducting experimental archeology in 1983, mainly within the areas of lithic technology (flint knapping and ground stone tools) and atlatls (spear throwers). He has taught lithic technology seminars, and has created stone artifact replicas for museums.</p>

<p>Mr. Doney has a mammoth-sized collection of rock, mineral and fossil specimens. His collection also includes Makonde, shetani wooden sculptures from East Africa, aboriginal artifacts from New Guinea and Australia, stamps, coins, seashells, antlers, skulls, Suiseki, Gongshi, molcajetes, metates, books (over 6,000), and antique mining tools.</p>]]></description><category><![CDATA[STEM,STEM-Faculty]]></category>

Zaman, a faculty member in the Biology department.</p>

<p>Both Larissa and Mariela joined Dr. M.S. Zaman in his review research of the role of polymorphic crystals in medicine. Their work has led to a full-length manuscript which is expected to be published in a peer-reviewed journal.</p>

<p>Most recently Ms. Barroso prepared an abstract that was accepted for presentation at the 2019 UTRGV School of Medicine Research Symposium held at the McAllen Convention Center on Sept. 14. The presentation was titled &ldquo;Polymorphic Crystals in Medicine: Their Significance and Applications&rdquo; and was a result of her participation in the research review project with Dr. M.S. Zaman. She confidently answered questions regarding her research and clearly understand the role of the scientific method in finding answers to very important questions. This experience has helped solidify her academic plans.</p>

<p>Ms. Barroso is expected to graduate from STC in spring 2020 and plans to continue her education at UTRGV in the areas of Biomedical Sciences. ]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span>In the fall of 2015, the Department of Mathematics was awarded a sub-award from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley as part of their National Science Foundation (NSF) grant award, An Ecosystem for Success in Engineering and Computer Science in Rio South Texas (Award #1317661). The goal of this project was to support students interested in Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM), with specific interest in students majoring in Engineering, Computer Science and Mathematics.</span></p>

<p><span>A sub-award of $58,893.00 was provided to South Texas College&rsquo;s Department of Mathematics with Mario J. Morin serving as the Subrecipient Principal Investigator to implement programming that would provide structure for said STEM students to accelerate and succeed in their mathematics coursework as well as to provide support for students majoring in Engineering to have formal advisement to support transfer to UTRGV&rsquo;s College of Engineering. The Department of Mathematics used the monies to create an accelerated pathway for students to complete both a College Algebra & Pre-Calculus course sequence or a Pre-Calculus & Calculus I sequence in one semester, as most STEM programs require a minimum attainment of Calculus I in their degree plans (both Engineering and Mathematics require Calculus I as an entry-level course and pre-requisite to additional coursework).</span></p>

<p><span>Over the course of the three-year award, students showcased a higher success rate (>10%) in the accelerated course sequence model as compared to the single-course traditional 16-week course option. Over 150 STEM students were able to benefit from this program and many additional Engineering students were advised for transfer directly to UTRGV.</span>&nbsp;</p>]]></content:encoded><category><![CDATA[STEM,STEM-News]]></category>

]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>On March 29, 2019, the Divisions of Math, Science & Bachelor Programs (MSB) and Business, Public Safety & Technology (BPST) collaborated in sponsoring a STEM Summit. This event allowed students the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations and interact with presenters, faculty, student success specialists, university representatives, and STEM club members.</p>

<p>Over 150 STEM major students attended the event. Keynote speaker was Mr. Trung Nguyen, Plant Manager for Royal Technologies.&nbsp;Royal Technologies is an advanced engineering and manufacturing company serving diverse industries.</p>

<p>This was the second time the STEM Summit was held at STC and organizers from both the MSB and BPST Divisions expect to continue the event each semester with more speakers from different areas of STEM.</p>

<p>Mr. Jeremy Hinck, STC Physical Science instructor was the coordinator for the region wide event, which was designed to educate Rio Grande Valley residents about the risks, dangers, and actions to take before, during, and after a hurricane.</p>

<p>The expo included exhibits and booths which provided information regarding hurricane awareness and preparedness.                         <guid>https://news.southtexascollege.edu/waterbotics-2019/</guid><pp:caseid>357932</pp:caseid><description><![CDATA[<p><span>The South Texas College (STC) Engineering Program in partnership with City of McAllen Public Utility (MPU) held a two week long robotics camp between July 8 and July 19 using a curriculum entitled &ldquo;Waterbotics&rdquo;. The camp was geared towards youth of ages 12 to 17. There were 20 kids that participated in each week long camp. These participants were selected amongst many applicants via a competitive selection process.</span><span>The Waterbotics program goes beyond teaching kids about the basics of robotics such as programming, mechanical design and controls. It also emphasizes teamwork, decision making via the engineering design process, and introduces the participants to engineering as a career.</span></p>]]></description><category><![CDATA[STEM-News,STEM]]></category>

                        <title>Alan Martinez Herrera - Active Outdoor Biology Lab Experience</title>

Initially, Mr. Herrera took his students to explore the campus grounds with the intent of showing them how to apply their knowledge from the lab to the environment and life around them. Realizing how many students were not aware or familiar with the beautiful nature centers in our region, Mr. Herrera led an initiative to partner with these centers to provide instructional field trips. This Spring marked the second semester that he successfully coordinated the travel of over 800 students to Quinta Mazatl&aacute;n and the Weslaco Valley Nature Center. His innovated teaching provides a prime example of service learning as many of the students become park volunteers, actively applying their knowledge on speciation, natural selection, ecology, and ecosystems in a natural habitat.</span></p>]]></description><category><![CDATA[STEM-Faculty,STEM]]></category>

As Program Chair for the Department of Biology, she has demonstrated excellent leadership capabilities and a strong commitment to serving the students at South Texas College. She has created a positive work environment for faculty which has translated to faculty involvement with student clubs, community service activities, and expanding research opportunities for students.</p><p>Most recently she led faculty in the application and successful attainment of the SEA PHAGE research grant program sponsored by Howard Hughes Medical Institute. STC became one of two institutions to be granted this prestigious award in the state of Texas. He uses Mathematica software to create an immersive learning environment for his students. As students are already familiar with technology in the form of graphing calculators, the transition to a user-friendly, higher-level, technical computing system represents a natural progression in the learning process. It allows students to independently explore the concepts of polynomial zeros, x-intercepts, end-behavior and solutions of polynomial equations using Mathematica.</p><p>The intent is to have students explore and develop a deeper understanding of abstract and rigorous concepts by leveraging the dynamical nature of Mathematica. Bell also uses Mathematica to introduce students to coding. He actively participates in departmental search committees and physics program related task forces.</p><p>Dr. Xu also participates in departmental outreach activities including planetarium shows, HESTEC, Palm Fest, and higher education fairs. ]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span>Dr. Thomas Ndolo joined South Texas College after having an illustrious career as a research scientist. He has more than 10 publications in world renowned journals such as Journal of Immunology and Journal of Virology. He worked as a Senior Researcher at Colorado State University and as Assistant Project Scientist at University of California, Davis. He decided to leave research and turned to academia. After teaching at Laramie County Community College in Wyoming for several years, he decided to move to an area that afforded warmer weather. He came to STC with vast research experience and a great sense of what a community college should be. He joined the Biology Department in 2016, and in a short time has become one of the most active, respected, admired, and appreciated instructors within the department. His students describe him as caring and respectful; he has a great rapport with both students and colleagues.</span></p><p><span>Dr. Ndolo has been extremely active in writing NSF grants for the department. He is currently the Principal Investigator for an NSF-STEM Scholarship grant that is in its final stages. If funded, it will provide $650,000 over five years to support 40 low income students majoring in STEM disciplines; this is the third grant that he has helped to write and coordinate. Dr. Ndolo is also actively involved in various departmental committees and played a pivotal role in the department's application and submission to the HHMI SEA PHAGE grant program. STC successfully earned a spot in this program, becoming the first institution in South Texas to join this program and one of two Texas schools invited to participate in this year. Dr. Ndolo is now leading the grants committee in preparation and implementation of this program in the Fall semester. In addition to these responsibilities, Dr. Ndolo manages to teach a full load of courses without compromising his commitment to his students.</span><span>Besides his arduous commitment to bridging opportunities to facilitate student success, Dr. Ndolo is well known for his reliability and dependability. His willingness to volunteer to help with departmental needs is remarkable; he doesn&rsquo;t hesitate, and immediately prepares to take over courses needing substitutes or replacement faculty.                         <title>STC Biology Graduate Continues Education at Texas A&amp;M College of Veterinary Medicine</title>

Stephanie graduated from STC in the Fall of 2015 and then transferred to Texas A&M-Kingsville, where she majored in Animal Science. She graduated with honors with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from TAMU-K in the Fall of 2018.</span><span> Stephanie is very appreciative to STC for the solid foundation it provided, and considers it her &ldquo;home-base.&rdquo; She says, &ldquo;I love STC so much because it prepared me for my bachelor&rsquo;s work at TAMU-K.&rdquo; Stephanie describes her academic experience at STC as &ldquo;rigorous.&rdquo;</span></p><p><span>That STC experience included participation in the STEPUP grant program. This program was administered by STC Biology Department faculty, and allowed Stephanie to do laboratory research in the lab of Dr. Carlos Avila at the Texas A&M Agrilife Research Center in Weslaco. Her project there utilized genetic barcoding to confirm the existence of a Texas population of Nesidiocoris tenuis, an insect pest from Spain that feeds on tomatoes. She believes that her experience at the research lab helped her veterinary school applications stand out and is thankful to STC for the &ldquo;once-in-a-lifetime&rdquo; opportunity.</span><span> With full support from her husband and children, Stephanie is excited to continue her education at Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine beginning in the summer of 2019. Among 1,500 applicants for a slot in that veterinary program, Stephanie was one of less than 150 that were accepted! She has worked with various animals already, both during her studies at TAMU-K and by working as a veterinary technician at multiple veterinary clinics. She does have a special interest in birds though, and intends to become a board-certified avian veterinarian. After finishing vet school, she plans to open a veterinary practice back here in the Rio Grande Valley to provide affordable care for pets of all species. As if that weren&rsquo;t enough, she intends to pursue a Ph.D.!</span><span> Stephanie is a great example of what STC students are capable of achieving.</span></p>]]></description><pp:quotes><pp:quote>

                        <title>STC Students to Join the Nationwide Phage Hunters Research Program</title>

<p>Impactful, high-quality undergraduate research opportunities often are few and far between even at well funded four-year institutions with strong research traditions. And yet STC &mdash; a two-year college serving a predominantly minority Hispanic population that includes many students who are the first in their family to pursue higher education &mdash; is doing just that.</p>

<p>Through a program known as SEA-PHAGES, STC is rising to the challenge and offering authentic, valuable, accessible undergraduate research opportunities designed to foster scientific inquiry and discovery among a relatively large cohort of 24 students.</p>

<p>The Science Education Association-Phage Hunters Advancing Genomic and Evolutionary Science (SEA-PHAGES) is a program established by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and comprising a nationwide collaboration of 177 institutions that enlists students to help discover new bacteriophage species. Bacteriophages are a very diverse group of viruses that specifically attack bacteria. Given that bacteria evolve resistance to antibiotics very quickly, bacteriophages&rsquo; natural tendency to mount lethal attacks on bacteria holds great promise for use in fighting resilient infectious diseases.</p><p>Featured on the &ldquo;SEA-PHAGES in the News&rdquo; section of the SEA-PHAGES website, many news stories describe the journeys of the participating students over the course of the 11 years since the program&rsquo;s inception, highlighting their profound experiences in the pursuit of scientific discovery.</p><p>One such story is that of Jade Connor, who joined the SEA-PHAGES program at Baylor University. Connor, a senior biology major from Lewisville, Texas, interested in pre-med, was among 24 applicants selected prior to the start of their freshman year2.</p><p>&ldquo;In high school, I wanted to be a journalist. I took AP Biology during my senior year because I wanted to get science out of the way,&rdquo; Connor said. She explained that after watching a documentary in that same biology class about cracking your personal genetic code, she was shocked and inspired &ndash;&ndash; forever changing her career path.</p><p>In the SEA-PHAGES program, Connor&rsquo;s interest in research was given space to blossom. ]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In the summer of 2018, South Texas College student Ernie Reyes did agricultural research with Dr. John Goolsby at the USDA CPHST Mission labs in Edinburg as part of the South Texas College STEP2 grant program. The STEP2 grant program is a multi-institution partnership which pairs STC students with local scientists to do research. The goal of Ernie&rsquo;s research was to develop new delivery methods for biological control agents for the cattle fever tick. Cattle fever ticks have spread to several ranches in the lower Rio Grande Valley via Nilgai antelopes. Ernie&rsquo;s research used a roundworm (a nematode) from local habitats as a control agent. These worms are not harmful to mammals but do feed on the cattle fever ticks. The research utilized a sprayer system which automatically delivered nematodes to free-roaming Nilgai.</p>

<p>In February, the USDA-funded STEP2 grant supported Ernie&rsquo;s travel to Washington DC to present his results from the research at the 2019 meeting of the American Society for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). In Ernie&rsquo;s own words, &ldquo;<em>The American Association for the Advancement of Science conference in Washington, D.C. was amazing. I enjoyed every moment of my trip from presenting a poster on my work with the USDA, to listening about new studies being done. I encourage anyone interested in science to seek out local or nationwide conferences. You meet kind people from all over the world.</em>&rdquo;</p><p>Less than a week after Ernie returned to the valley from Washington, he joined former STC student and STEP2 grant recipient Iysha Flores, and Biology Department faculty member Dr. Dan Murray to do a presentation about the grant and his research at the 2019 Region One STEM Summit at South Padre Island. Ernie&rsquo;s experience gained in the STEP2 program has helped him obtain a full-time research position at the USDA in collaboration with Texas A&M University Kingsville, where he continues to work on biological control of the cattle fever tick. Ernie has expressed gratitude for the opportunity STC has made available via the STEP2 grant, and for the doors it opened for him. After finishing at STC, Ernie plans to continue studying in the Agricultural Sciences in order to advance in his position with USDA/TAMUK.</p>]]></content:encoded><pp:quotes><pp:quote>

]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>One of Sharyland&rsquo;s top dual credit students says South Texas College has made a world of difference in preparing her for a future medical career.</p>

<p>Last summer, Destiny Closner was named valedictorian at Sharyland Advanced Academic Academy and graduated from STC with an associate degree in Biology in May.</p>

<p>Destiny said she was 16 years old when she began taking college courses as a sophomore through STC&rsquo;s Dual Credit Program.</p>

<p>&ldquo;I got into this early college because my mom really wanted me to get that associate degree and my high school degree at the same time,&rdquo; Destiny said. &ldquo;My mom is a pharmacist, so that's why I always knew I wanted to be in the science field.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Dual Credit Programs at STC provide the opportunity for eligible high school students, in a participating school district, to enroll in college courses while still attending high school. STC boasts one of the largest Dual Credit Programs in the state, serving high school students, tuition-free, since 2000.</p>

<p>In partnership with STC, Sharyland Advanced Academic Academy is one of 29 ISD Early College High Schools (ECHS) designed to provide high school students with the opportunity to earn up to 60 credit hours and/or an Associate degree while in high school. Each ISD ECHS is designed to create a seamless transition between high school and college.</p><p>Hoping to enter a career in pediatrics, Destiny said she was inspired to succeed by her mother Melissa, a pharmacist, as well as her two younger siblings whose support she says was crucial to her success in school.</p><p>&ldquo;My siblings have been a big motivation for me, especially because they look up to me, and I want them to see it's possible to be valedictorian, to take all these college classes, and to still have friends on the side and stuff like that,&rdquo; Destiny said. &ldquo;All of my STC professors have been really helpful transitioning high school kids into college kids, and I think with their help, it was pretty fun to be in a college class surrounded by people like twice your age, and then still being able to keep up with them.&rdquo;</p><p>Opting to study microbiology at STC, Destiny said her plan is to now begin the journey into medical school by completing her bachelor degree at the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV).</p><p>STC she said gave her the crucial experience she needed before she transitioned to the university.</p><p>&ldquo;I took most of my classes here at STC, so I was only at high school really for two to three hours, and then I would come straight over to the college. I even took summer classes, so it has been a real college experience,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;After I finish UTRGV, I'm hoping to get into either UTRGV medical school or UTSA medical school, or any medical school I can really get into, and then take it from there with the debt and the financing and all that.&rdquo;</p><p>Now finally graduated, Destiny says her career track is set, and with the help of her family and STC will one day reach her goals.</p>]]></content:encoded><pp:quotes><pp:quote>

]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>South Texas College alumnus and bilingual reporter, Genaro Tijerina, is now in the studio and ready to start the day.</p>

<p>Genaro, originally from Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico was raised in General Bravo, Nuevo Leon. He came to the United States for a better life. Being the son of immigrants, he and his parents were always traveling.</p>

<p>&ldquo;When I used to live in Mexico with my parents, we would go back and forth all the time,&rdquo; said Genaro. &ldquo;My parents would work in the fields in California and Texas.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Growing up, Genaro always dreamed of being a television anchor and says he knew exactly how he would make it happen.</p>

<p>&ldquo;I remember as a kid, I would tell myself &lsquo;Im going to move to the United States, learn English, and become an anchor one day,&rsquo;&rdquo; said Genaro. &ldquo;I knew it was going to be a tough goal to reach, but I was motivated to make it happen.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Genaro&rsquo;s journey of being an anchor started at the age of 16&nbsp;where he attended the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon. There, he received first place in the National Science Competition &ldquo;VII World Science for all 2001-2002&rdquo; and had the chance to visit the President of Mexico, Vicente Fox Quezada.</p>

<p>Genaro migrated to the United States at the age of 18. It was then that he enrolled at South Texas College, where he decided to pursue a Bachelors of Applied Technology Degree in Technology Management (BAT).</p>

<p>The BAT program at STC educates, trains, and develops successful supervisors who will be prepared to utilize technology to create a competitive advantage for their company.</p>

<p>&ldquo;I enjoyed being in the BAT program. One of my biggest mentors was Dr. Ali Esmaeili,&rdquo; explained Genaro. &ldquo;When I graduated, I graduated with four different honor societies that include the National Honor Society of Leadership and Success, Kappa Beta Honor Society, English Honor Society, and the Vice President Honor Society.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Soon after graduating from STC, Genaro found himself in the spotlight, landing several jobs including Telemundo 40 in McAllen, Entravision in McAllen, and Telemundo 60 in San Antonio.</p><p>&ldquo;One of the things I remember working with these different companies, is that I got to interview people like Beto O&rsquo; Rourke, Julian Castro, and Ted Cruz,&rdquo; said Genaro.</p><p>Genaro is now breaking the mold by making his dream a reality working for Univision in Philadelphia as a bilingual journalist.</p><p>&ldquo;I work in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware,&rdquo; said Genaro. &ldquo;Some of the things my job consists of is working with the community, covering breaking news stories, and writing in English and Spanish."</p><p>Genaro feels like he has learned a lot being able to cover news in different states and says the experience has been amazing.</p><p>&ldquo;My experience in these different states has been a rewarding experience,&rdquo; expressed Genaro.</p><p>&ldquo;Two weeks ago, I received an email that I was selected as top journalist of the year by the National Association of Top Professionals from New York,&rdquo; said Genaro.</p><p>While receiving the award, Genaro says he was overwhelmed with emotions and was taken back to his childhood.</p><p>&ldquo;I had a flashback when I opened the award,&rdquo; explained Genaro. &ldquo;It took me back to those times growing up in Mexico when I was poor and didn&rsquo;t have much. I looked back to where I started to where I am now.&rdquo;</p><p>Genaro thanks South Texas College for the path he is on, and says he is proud of where he started.</p><p>&ldquo;I am always going to be proud to be a Jaguar from South Texas College,&rdquo; said Genaro. &ldquo;South Texas College is an excellent college that taught me everything I needed to know.&rdquo;</p><p>With the press of a button, Genaro is now on camera. He says that hard work pays off and says he wants to continue moving forward.</p><p>&ldquo;As a son of immigrants, I came to America to have a better life, and I think I am achieving that slowly but surely,&rdquo; expressed Genaro.</p><p>&ldquo;I am very motivated to continue moving forward,&rdquo; said Genaro. &ldquo;I see the suffering of those individuals trying to cross for a better life and I want to do this for them.&rdquo;</p>]]></content:encoded><pp:quotes><pp:quote>

This story is part of STC’s exceptional graduate series celebrating students who are expected to graduate this upcoming commencement ceremony. </pp:subtitle><description><![CDATA[<p>Sebastiana Arredondo feels life is all about fighting to stay on top. She says &ldquo;in life, you win some, and you lose some.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Raised in a household with 11 siblings, Sebastiana says college wasn&rsquo;t much of a thought growing up.</p>

<p>&ldquo;My mom never encouraged us to go to college,&rdquo; said Sebastiana. &ldquo;All she wanted for us was to be good and have a high paying job.&rdquo;</p>

<p>While Sebastiana had all the intentions of being successful, she ran into some obstacles along the way.</p>

<p>&ldquo;I got married really young and was a housewife taking care of my two kids,&rdquo; explained Sebastiana. &ldquo;I soon found myself in a divorce, leaving me lost, and trying to be a strong mother.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Through all the pain Sebastiana endured, she says she found strength in herself to better her life.</p>

<p>&ldquo;My divorce was a life-changing experience. I often found myself crying because I didn&rsquo;t know what to do,&rdquo; expressed Sebastiana. &ldquo;I realized enrolling at STC would benefit me for the future.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Sebastiana is now a full-time student at South Texas College and says she came out victorious after the struggles.</p>

<p>Sebastiana is pursuing a bachelors&rsquo; degree in technology management and is slated to graduate this May.</p>

<p>&ldquo;I&rsquo;m so excited that I will be graduating,&rdquo; explained Sebastiana. &ldquo;I am blessed that I have been able to finish my four years of college and be a good role model for my kids.&rdquo;</p>

<p>The Bachelor of Applied Technology Degree (BAT) in Technology Management at STC will educate, train, and develop successful supervisors who will be prepared to utilize technology to create a competitive advantage for their business. Coursework is balanced between practical training and working with real-life projects. These projects enhance educational experiences as well as employment potential for students.</p><p>Technology Management Instructor at STC, Dr. Benito Garza, says the technology management is based on business.</p><p>&ldquo;The technology management program at South Texas College has a strong business foundation,&rdquo; said Garza. &ldquo;This program trains students to be supervisors and managers. Hopefully, after they graduate, they move on to be a supervisor at that big time company.&rdquo;</p><p>Sebastiana feels working in the business technology field is something she enjoys and would like to pursue as a career. She says it&rsquo;s kept her in the winner&rsquo;s circle.</p><p>&ldquo;I used to work at Panasonic, and there we would work on shipments of electronics and we would have to do all the graphs and paper work. I really enjoyed it,&rdquo; said Sebastiana.</p><p>Sebastiana says graduating with a degree will present her with many opportunities that she is excited about.</p><p>&ldquo;The thing with this degree is, is that it&rsquo;s a business degree,&rdquo; expressed Sebastiana. &ldquo;Nowadays, all these companies are working with computers. I feel like this degree will open many doors for me.&rdquo;</p><p>Sebastiana says her time at STC has been the best and feels like the professors have all been excellent.</p><p>&ldquo;My experience at STC has&nbsp;exceptional. All of my professors have been good to me,&rdquo; expressed Sebastiana. &ldquo;Whenever I ask a professor to help me, they are always glad to do so.&rdquo;</p><p>Through it all, Sebastiana says the hard times were all worth it.</p><p>&ldquo;In the end, life is all about fighting to stay on top. In May, I&rsquo;m coming out on top.&rdquo;</p>]]></description><pp:quotes><pp:quote>

]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In honor of National Nurses Week (May 6-12) South Texas College recognizes student of the week, Amanda Rodriguez.</p>

<p>Amanda is pursuing an Associate Degree in Nursing and hopes to work as a Neonatal nurse. She says she has big dreams.</p>

<p>Since she was little, Amanda Rodriguez has had a dream to be in the medical field. Now she has chosen South Texas College to make that dream a reality.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Ever since I was eight years old, I've always wanted to do something in the medical field, I want to be a neonatal nurse,&rdquo; said Amanda. &ldquo;I've always had a passion for working with little kids and infants.&rdquo;</p>

<p>The Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Program at STC will prepare students with the basic competencies to become safe practitioners in the healthcare field. Upon successful completion of the Associate of Applied Science major in Associate Degree Nursing, the graduate will have a chance to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).</p>

<p><span>Before enrolling at STC, Amanda says she has had experience taking care of kids and infants, and is ready for her career path.</span></p><p>"I would take care of my baby cousins. Some of them were probably a few months old,&rdquo; explained Amanda. &ldquo;I would be asked to babysit them quite often and seeing them grow up is pretty awesome.&rdquo;</p><p>Amanda says her experience at STC has been both enjoyable and fun.</p><p>&ldquo;I've really enjoyed it. I got into the biology club with Dr. Geller from Anatomy I. I was involved in the biology club and it was really fun experiencing all of the different places we went to. Being able to interact with Dr. Geller, other teachers, and students has been exciting for me.&rdquo;</p><p>In the future, Amanda says she plans to pursue her education and hopefully go for her masters.</p><p>&ldquo;After I get my associates in nursing, I want to transfer over to Incarnate Word for my bachelors. ]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>With his sights set on one day becoming a surgeon, Jose Mata says South Texas College is the perfect place to start his journey into a medical career.</p>

<p>Currently studying for his Associate of Science degree in Biology before moving on to his bachelor degree and hopefully medical school, Jose said he was inspired by his mother, a registered nurse, who initially pushed him into a medical career.</p>

<p>He said he grew up watching her as she made her rotations at the hospital where she worked and became dedicated to helping others just as she did.</p>

<p>&ldquo;It was nice having her support. She's a real inspiration for me,&rdquo; Jose said. &ldquo;I just think she's real smart and intelligent and I just want to be able to also help someone out like how she helps out people.</p>

<p>&ldquo;That's why I was going for nursing in the beginning, but I always kind of wanted to go for med-school instead,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;Several of the instructors here just motivated me as because they saw I was doing well in their class. They told me to just go for it and that motivated me as well to get better grades.&rdquo;</p><p>The Biology program at STC specializes in preparing students for many exciting career opportunities available in the biological sciences although many of those careers require training beyond an associate degree.</p><p>&ldquo;I think it's important to grasp all the material that's being given to you because you also grow as a person when you learn something new,&rdquo; Jose said. &ldquo;For those students pursuing a medical degree, you have to carry that mentality with you, especially when you are studying for big tests like the MCAT.&rdquo;</p><p>Offering advice to students seeking the same degree plan, Jose says it&rsquo;s not enough to just coast through school work.</p><p>&ldquo;I have seen some people who don't really like to learn and who just want to get through the class, and that&rsquo;s not the right way,&rdquo; Jose said. &ldquo;I know I won't make it in a university if I don't do really well here at STC, so I'm just trying to kill all the tests trying to make sure I have the highest grades in all my classes. If you are going down this route, you just have to make sure you understand everything.&rdquo;</p>]]></content:encoded><pp:quotes><pp:quote>

]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Students with South Texas College&rsquo;s Engineers Club brought home the gold following a whirlwind month of designing, manufacturing and ultimately testing their custom-made electric vehicle.</p>

<p>The students tested their expertise in STEM while working as a team and conquering challenges at the 2nd annual Green Power USA HESTC Electric Car Competition held at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley&rsquo;s Brownsville campus April 5-6.</p>

<p>STC&rsquo;s Future Engineers Club &ldquo;No. 28&rdquo; car earned first place in the Institution of Higher Education category beating out Texas A&M Kingsville and UTRGV after stiff competition.</p>

<p>&ldquo;For us to actually have a team that placed first feels really great,&rdquo; said Future Engineers Club President, Berenice Padilla, who is majoring in Civil Engineering at STC. &ldquo;It felt great to coordinate and motivate our team and to ensure we were on our way to success. We proved ourselves on Saturday.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Students used electric car kits from GreenPower USA, a national organization based in Huntsville, Ala., which includes as its mission, the advancement of education in the subjects of sustainable engineering and technology to young people.</p><p><span>GreenPower organizes similar races across the nation. In Brownsville, South Texas College was among 26 teams that presented their cars, which they then raced for 90 minutes around a track created at the UTRGV campus.</span></p><p><span>Competitors were judged in three areas including a video segment produced by the crew, a presentation about the improvements made to the vehicle, and the performance of the car during the race itself.</span></p><p><span>&ldquo;We put in a lot of hours in this, and we had to invest time in order to make mechanical, electrical and thermodynamic modifications to the car,&rdquo; said Adan Gonzalez, a student with the club who also assisted in putting the vehicle together.</span></p><p><span>&ldquo;It was quite a task because our team was formed maybe five weeks prior to the competition but we prioritized above all the temperature of the motor,&rdquo; Gonzalez said. &ldquo;The crew designed a custom-made heat sink that was manufactured at our own Technology Campus, and we saw a lot of improvement with that.&rdquo;</span></p>]]></content:encoded><pp:quotes><pp:quote>

]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>More than 140 students from various school districts in the Valley attended South Texas College&rsquo;s (STC) second annual Girls in Technology event at the college&rsquo;s Technology Campus Wednesday, Feb. 27.</p><p>The program, which was organized as an offshoot of STC&rsquo;s annual Women in Technology event which takes place in April, consisted of speakers, hands-on activities, and tours of various manufacturers in the area.</p><p>Much like its sister event, Women in Technology, the new program established for girls is an initiative to build the education and motivation for them to explore opportunities for careers in various technology fields offered at STC&rsquo;s Technology Campus.</p><p>Speakers at the event included STC President Dr. Shirley A. Reed, Border Patrol agent Sam Clark, and STC Dean of Business, Public Safety and Technology Mario Reyna.</p><p>&ldquo;Growing up, I learned had to be really tough and I had to be really smart,&rdquo; Dr. Reed told students. &ldquo;I learned that I had to run faster, I had to be stronger and get better grades. No matter what it was, I had to be better and it has served me very well throughout my life and my career.</p><p>&ldquo;Today, I will tell every one of you that you have to be tough and you have to be smart because you will have some challenges as you get older but right now you have the opportunity to just dream,&rdquo; Dr. Reed said.</p><p>Attendees were able to take the first step into the world of technology by participating in hands-on activities with Advanced Manufacturing Technology, Welding and Architectural Engineering Design Technology (AEDT) programs and had the opportunity to tour various manufacturing companies.</p><p>Students visited companies including Priority Tooling Solutions where they were introduced to plastic injection molds and Royal Technologies, where they learned about injection molding.</p><p>&ldquo;There are plenty of careers out there, and really the choices are endless when it comes to what we have to offer here at South Texas College.,&rdquo; said Dr. Esmeralda Adame, Assistant Dean of STC's Bsueinss, Public Safety and Technology Division. &ldquo;Everything we are doing here is an effort to open not only their eyes, but all the pathways that are before them. We want to expose them to what we have and all of the careers so they can see that they can really do anything they want.</p><p>&ldquo;Here, we are jumping at the chance to get them exposed to what there is. ]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Feb. 17-23 is national engineers week. Founded by the National Society of Professional Engineers in 1951, EWeek is dedicated to ensuring a diverse and well-educated future engineering workforce by increasing understanding of and interest in engineering and technology careers. Each year, EWeek reaches thousands of schools, businesses, and community groups across the U.S.</p>

<p>Jazmin Hernandez says focusing on her future career as an engineer has been inspired by a personal outlook on the environment and from conservation efforts by professionals who can use their expertise to make the world a better place.</p>

<p>Jazmin began at STC in the fall of 2017, and has commuted from Los Fresnos, a roughly 45 minute drive, in order to take classes on campus. She is currently pursuing her Associate of Science in Engineering degree from STC and said she looks forward to a career in environmental engineering, preferably in the field of water treatment.</p>

<p>&ldquo;I knew I wanted to do something to help the environment because I took an environmental science class and I really got into it. It became my favorite class,&rdquo; Jazmin said. &ldquo;I didn't even know that environment engineering was a thing until I took an engineering class in high school.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Deeply affected by the water crisis in Flint, Jazmin says she looks to one day use her training to prevent incidents like that from ever happening again.</p><p>&ldquo;I always see in the paper how there are lots of people without water even in the United States, so I want to do something to help,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;In Flint, their city was built so long ago that they didn't bother to redevelop it.
