]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p>The first Friday of October has been celebrated as Manufacturing Day (MFG). This year, South Texas&nbsp;College&nbsp;Tech Campus&nbsp;held&nbsp;its annual event inviting local high school students and engineers to promote&nbsp;careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM).&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>As associate professor&nbsp;Dr.&nbsp;Esmeralda&nbsp;Adame&nbsp;puts it, &ldquo;manufacturing is all around us&rdquo; she said speaking to students&nbsp;from&nbsp;Mission Veterans Memorial High School and Hidalgo ISD.&nbsp;</p><p>&ldquo;It&rsquo;s in the chairs you&rsquo;re sitting on, the&nbsp;TV, your iPhones, the bus you rode&nbsp;on&nbsp;this morning, the list goes on and on because it takes a lot to become&nbsp;an engineer and designer,"&nbsp;said Adame.&nbsp;&ldquo;We have so many&nbsp;things&nbsp;happening and with the collaboration with other companies, we&nbsp;are&nbsp;celebrating&nbsp;this as&nbsp;a&nbsp;manufacturing&nbsp;month.&rdquo;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>Local&nbsp;companies&nbsp;like&nbsp;Cinch&nbsp;Connectivity Solutions&nbsp;and IHC Suspension&nbsp;attended MFG&nbsp;Day&nbsp;where one STC alumni shared his&nbsp;experience as an&nbsp;IHC&nbsp;engineer for&nbsp;automotive&nbsp;drop&nbsp;kits&nbsp;and lift kits.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>&ldquo;We&rsquo;re one of the leaders in lifted trucks,&rdquo; shares Horacio Salinas, IHC manufacturing engineer.&nbsp;&ldquo;As an engineer,&nbsp;I&nbsp;usually&nbsp;bring the&nbsp;concepts&nbsp;to life,&nbsp;so&nbsp;every time&nbsp;a product is&nbsp;changing,&nbsp;I know of&nbsp;it&nbsp;because my department receives the blueprints from GM, Ford or Dodge.&rdquo;&nbsp;</p><p>Salinas credits STC for his path&nbsp;into&nbsp;the STEAM field when&nbsp;beginning his enrollment as a dual credit&nbsp;student in 2015,&nbsp;then&nbsp;graduating from high school in 2017&nbsp;and earning&nbsp;his certificate&nbsp;in&nbsp;Advanced Manufacturing. He&nbsp;then&nbsp;earned&nbsp;his associate&nbsp;and graduated&nbsp;from&nbsp;STC&nbsp;in 2019.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>&ldquo;STC is very helpful because they work with you while you get the experience, and I actually left a university&nbsp;and came back because they&nbsp;were&nbsp;just not as helpful and I&rsquo;m very big on two-year technical schools before you go anywhere else,&rdquo;&nbsp;he shares.&nbsp;</p><p>The event also held a lab tour where students&nbsp;were able to get hands-on experience with manufacturing&nbsp;machines and ask questions from STC professors.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>&ldquo;We want to&nbsp;teach and expose&nbsp;students&nbsp;to&nbsp;the amazing world of manufacturing that exists here in the&nbsp;Valley,&rdquo; said Adame. &ldquo;There are plenty of job opportunities&nbsp;here and a lot of the time students&nbsp;are not aware&nbsp;of&nbsp;[DA1] plastic, metal stamping, CNC&nbsp;(computer numerical control)&nbsp;machining, quality control&nbsp;manufacturing.&nbsp;There&rsquo;s even a local manufacturing company making stick-shifts for&nbsp;Camaros.&rdquo;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>Encouraging&nbsp;the STEAM field&rsquo;s importance also comes with the&nbsp;importance of&nbsp;encouraging&nbsp;women&nbsp;to&nbsp;enter&nbsp;the field.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>&ldquo;Women are&nbsp;multitaskers,&nbsp;and those same skills are needed in the workplace here,&rdquo;&nbsp;said&nbsp;Erika Guerra, STC advanced&nbsp;manufacturing&nbsp;tech instructor.&nbsp;&ldquo;Their interests lie within some of these STEAM and STEM fields.&rdquo;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>While&nbsp;all&nbsp;STC&rsquo;s manufacturing technology professors have&nbsp;made their contributions in the early start of their careers&nbsp;ranging&nbsp;from&nbsp;petroleum to mechanical&nbsp;engineering,&nbsp;Dr. Adame shares&nbsp;her&nbsp;early&nbsp;contributions to the community.&nbsp;</p><p>&ldquo;I contributed to the baseball stadium in&nbsp;Edinburg&nbsp;which&nbsp;used to be home to the Roadrunners but now is a&nbsp;part of UTRGV and I was able to work on floorplans that built&nbsp;the locker&nbsp;rooms,&nbsp;and&nbsp;I was a&nbsp;draftsperson for&nbsp;some time&nbsp;designing buildings&nbsp;with another company,&rdquo; she said.&nbsp;</p><p>Other STC Advanced Manufacturing&nbsp;Technology&nbsp;professors&nbsp;in attendance were&nbsp;Mario&nbsp;A.                         <title>&#039;Myth vs Facts On Vaccinations&#039;</title>

                        <guid>https://news.southtexascollege.edu/myth-vs-facts-on-vaccinations/</guid><pp:caseid>450969</pp:caseid><pp:subtitle>Biology Department hosts talk with Dr. Emilie Prot</pp:subtitle><description><![CDATA[<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>The Biology Department held a live stream event called &ldquo;Myth vs Fact: COVID Vaccination&rdquo; on February 11 by Dr. Emilie Prot.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Dr. Emilie Prot is the Regional Medical Director at the Texas Department of Health. Dr. Prot is board certified in public health and general Preventive Medicine. She serves as a committee member on the Task Force of Border Health Officials, mandated by statute (S.B. No. 1680), and a committee member of the Public Health Funding and Policy Committee. She is a faculty member for the residency program in preventive medicine and public health at the Texas State Department of Health and is faculty member for UT Rio Grande Valley Medical School. She is passionate about global health, advocacy, health equity and strives to care for populations in Texas in particular Texas Mexico border region.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>During our seminar, students and community members learned how vaccines work with our immune system to fight and prevent diseases. Dr. Prot described how a vaccine is developed and the phases of clinical trials that it must go through to be approved by the FDA. She described and compared the COVID vaccine candidates and at what phase in clinical trials are they currently in. Dr. Prot explained the technology behind the first two COVID vaccine approved by the FDA for emergency use and listed the reported and expected side effects. She explained who is at risk of getting COVID-19 and therefore are candidates for the COVID-19 vaccines. She shared a National Strategy to Reinforce Confidence in COVID-19 Vaccines. Dr. Prot&rsquo;s final take home message was &ldquo;Vaccine confidence starts with you. Building defenses against COVID-19 is a team effort. Share your reasons for getting vaccinated and encourage others. Do not to forget to wear a facemask. Stay 6ft physical distancing. Wash your hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Stay home when you are sick.                         <title>&#039;Biology of Stress&#039;</title>

                        <guid>https://news.southtexascollege.edu/biology-of-stress/</guid><pp:caseid>450968</pp:caseid><pp:subtitle>Biology, Counseling &amp; Disability Departments partner for live stream event</pp:subtitle><description><![CDATA[<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>The Biology Department partnered with the Counseling and Accessibility Department to bring a live stream event&nbsp;called &ldquo;The Biology of Stress&rdquo; on March 11 by Ms. Sonia Rivera.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Sonia Rivera is native of the Rio Grande Valley and a licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Texas and nationally Certified Rehabilitation Counselor. She has worked as a counselor for South Texas College since February of 2000.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>During our seminar, students and community members learned that stress is a state of mental or emotional tension resulting from very demanding or adverse circumstances. Ms. Rivera explained the biology of stress and explained that stress is a normal response of the body&rsquo;s way of reacting to a condition such as a threat, challenge or physical and psychological barrier.                         <title>Biology Department hosts Impacts of Climate Change</title>

                        <guid>https://news.southtexascollege.edu/impacts-of-climate-change/</guid><pp:caseid>448455</pp:caseid><description><![CDATA[<p><span><span>The Biology Department held a live stream event called "Impacts of Climate Change in the Lower Rio Grande Valley" on April 8 by Dr. Christopher Gabler.</span></span></p><p><span><span>Dr. Gabler leads the Plant Ecology and Sustainability Lab at UTRGV and focuses on global change and finding practical ways to reverse the current rapid decline in biodiversity and ecosystem function. He received his Ph.D. from Rice University in 2012 and held postdoctoral positions at the University of Houston and the USGS National Wetlands Research Center. Dr. Gabler joined the faculty at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in 2016. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the School of Earth, Environmental, and Marine Sciences with a joint appointment in the Department of Biology. Dr. Gabler is also the Program Coordinator for UTRGV's B.S. program in Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems. His research focuses mainly on ecological restoration, climate change, invasive species, and sustainable agriculture, and he works most frequently in coastal habitats, wetlands, forests, and urban agroecosystems.</span></span></p><p><span><span>Students and community members learned about the critical ecological, economic, and social impacts of climate change on the U.S. Gulf Coast people and ecosystems, focusing on the Lower Rio Grande Valley. After an enlightening and reality check that climate change is already affecting our planet and it will get worse, Dr. Gabler spoke about ways to reduce our carbon footprint and otherwise act to help mitigate climate change in the coming decades. He explained that the significant components of carbon footprints are transportation, energy use, food, goods, and services.</span></span></p><p><span><span>Dr. Gabler listed recommendations on what each of us can change in our daily lives that will help reduce our carbon footprint.</span></span></p><ul><li><span><span>Drive less, walk, or bike when feasible. Plan and take fewer trips by minimizing connecting flights or teleconference when possible.</span></span></li><li><span><span>Reduce home energy consumption by setting your thermostat higher in the summer and lower in the winter</span></span></li><li><span><span>Reduce appliance use by hanging your clothes to dry, hand wash dishes, and disconnect devices when they are on standby.</span></span></li><li><span><span>Transition to cleaner energy sources by incorporating on-site generation-solar roofs and choosing cleaner fuels when selecting appliances and energy providers.</span></span></li><li><span><span>Eat less meat by minimizing beef and lamb or eat lower on the food chain. Gonzales traveled to the San Juan Nursing Home to donate cozy blankets to the entire center&rsquo;s 80 residents.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>&ldquo;To us, we must help those in need,&rdquo; said Gonzales. &ldquo;Many of us can positively impact these individuals and families by supplying assistance to local organizations that support our community.&rdquo;</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>The San Juan Nursing Home (SJNH) is a faith-based, not-for-profit corporation under the Catholic Diocese of Bro</span></span></span></span></span></span></span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>wnsville.                         <title>Biology Series Creates Awareness on World AIDS Day</title>

                        <guid>https://news.southtexascollege.edu/biology-series-creates-awareness-on-world-aids-day/</guid><pp:caseid>436320</pp:caseid><description><![CDATA[<p>On World AIDS Day, December 1st, the South Texas College Biology Department held a live stream event called &ldquo;Find Your Voice in the Battle for Health on the Border&rdquo; led by Oscar Lopez and Armando Molina.</p><p>Students and community members learned about HIV, how it affects Latinos on the Texas-Mexico border, the stigmas attached to HIV, and where to seek medical attention. Towards the end of the discussion, an HIV test was performed during the live stream for awareness of the process. Additionally, the event was also featured in the local news on December 2nd by KRGV.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p><img alt="" src="https://content.presspage.com/uploads/2206/500_oscarlopez.jpg?x=1614102990371" style="margin: 1px 7px; float: left; width: 200px; height: 200px;" />Oscar Lopez is the CEO and National Policy Director for&nbsp;Poderosos, a national Advocacy and Capacity Building Organization based on the U.S- Mexican border focusing on improving the wellness of the Latinx community.</p><p>Armando Molina serves marginalized populations through education, testing, and counseling.                         <title>Colleges Partner for B2BMED Research Training Program</title>

The program is supported by a $2 million National Institute of Health (NIH)&nbsp;funded grant for 5 years (08/01/2020 to 07/31/2025).</p><p>The program will provide support to STC students enrolled in Associate Biology programs to research in biomedical sciences. It provides stipends, tuition, and research and academic advising support to the students. Megan Zamora, Karina Cantu, Natasha Garcia Rodriguez, Viviana Villalobos, and Elias Martinez were selected as the first cohort of students through a competitive selection process.                         <title>STC Biology Department SEA-PHAGES Students and Faculty Publication Contributions</title>

The first fourteen authors are also students that worked on the annotation as part of the Spring 2020 Biology 1407 HHMI SEA PHAGES bioinformatics&nbsp;course2.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>The first year of SEA-PHAGES course at STC was very engaging as the faculty&nbsp;were&nbsp;busy not only teaching and guiding students but also publishing scholarly work. SEA-PHAGE faculty across the country collaborated in the annotation and publication of&nbsp;Mycobacterium&nbsp;phage BodEinwohner17, Complete Genome in the&nbsp;Genbank. (Accession number MN945900)1.&nbsp;</p><p>SEA-PHAGES Administration&nbsp;organized a summer workshop and invited SEA -PHAGES&nbsp;faculty to develop online teaching resources&nbsp;for&nbsp;teaching&nbsp;bioinformatics&nbsp;in&nbsp;Fall 2020. The&nbsp;necessity for&nbsp;this workshop was driven by&nbsp;the&nbsp;current&nbsp;COVID-19 pandemic. The teaching resources&nbsp;developed by&nbsp;the&nbsp;faculty team&nbsp;were&nbsp;published in QUBES&nbsp;(Quantitative Undergraduate Biology Education and Synthesis), a resource for education, research, and collaboration in quantitative biology.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>Two SEA-PHAGES faculty from the STC Biology department,&nbsp;Dr. Thomas Ndolo and Dr. Shima Chaudhary,&nbsp;volunteered&nbsp;to&nbsp;collaboratively develop online teaching materials over&nbsp;the summer 2020&nbsp;session.&nbsp;The completed&nbsp;resources were&nbsp;then&nbsp;made available to all&nbsp;faculty&nbsp;for use in their courses. The SEA-PHAGES&nbsp;team&nbsp;showcased&nbsp;these resources prominently on the program website to facilitate peer-review and&nbsp;promote&nbsp;recognition&nbsp;to those individuals that aided in the development of these&nbsp;materials.&nbsp;&nbsp;The workshop focused on&nbsp;the&nbsp;following areas of the SEA-PHAGE course:&nbsp;</p><p>1. Develop Teaching Resources&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>SEA-PHAGE faculty&nbsp;expressed interest&nbsp;in&nbsp;developing&nbsp;shared teaching resources,&nbsp;particularly for the Phage Genomics/Bioinformatics component.&nbsp;Such shared resources&nbsp;are&nbsp;invaluable&nbsp;given that Phage Genomics&nbsp;was&nbsp;likely to feature prominently&nbsp;during the&nbsp;upcoming academic year.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>2.                         <title>Overcoming Anxiety during Stressful and Uncertain Times</title>

                        <guid>https://news.southtexascollege.edu/overcoming-anxiety-during-stressful-and-uncertain-times/</guid><pp:caseid>425504</pp:caseid><pp:subtitle>By Dr. Gustavo Fors-Rodriguez</pp:subtitle><description><![CDATA[<p><span><img alt="" src="https://content.presspage.com/uploads/2206/500_81990313-img-2293.jpg?x=1606166489358" style="margin: 5px; float: left; width: 200px; height: 235px;" />Between COVID-19, politics, and financial uncertainty it is important to understand anxiety, learn about useful tools, alternative treatments, and understand when professional help is necessary. </span></p><p><span>Anxiety is a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome that is often related to a sense of helplessness and losing control. It can be divided into physical, psychological, and behavioral symptoms. </span></p><p><span>Behavioral symptoms are often identified by others, as you may present anger or irritability, negativity, avoidance, overplanning or sleep problems. </span></p><p><span>Physical symptoms often force patients to seek medical treatment including visiting an ER. These include shortness of breath, dizziness, nausea, fast heartbeat, and chest pain, which make people believe some serious medical condition is affecting them. You will most easily identify anxiety when psychological symptoms like excessive worry, indecisiveness and overthinking occur. To deal with anxiety, and control it, a balanced diet, regular cardiovascular exercise, and meditation techniques are required. The most beneficial techniques include deep breathing exercise, yoga, mindfulness, and tai chi. </span></p><p><span>Some easy steps that can be taken to minimize and control anxiety during COVID-19 lockdown include staying connected with others via video or phone, taking regular walks around your neighborhood, talk with neighbors while maintaining social distance, picking up hobbies or learning new things.</span></p><p><span>It is also very important to avoid further stress by minimizing the amount of news watched, and make plans with family and friends for when the pandemic is over. </span></p><p><span>If you feel that you need counseling, you can contact South Texas College, Counseling and Student Disability Services (non-emergent) by calling (956) 872-2173. </span></p><p><span>For professional help and counseling you can also contact Tropical Texas Behavioral Health by calling (956) 289-7000 for non-emergent appointments or the 24-hour Crisis Hotline: 1-(877) 289-7199. ]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span><span><span><span>Above all else, self-motivation and perseverance are the key elements that have enabled Yanely Moreno to succeed as she looks ahead to a future medical career.</span></span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span><span>Yanely started her education at South Texas College in fall 2019. She is currently pursuing a degree in Biology with the hopes of one day entering a career as a Physician Assistant (PA).</span></span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span><span>STC provided her with a dual enrollment program that helped her get a head start on a college education while still enrolled as a student at Roma High School, Yanely said.</span></span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span><span>&ldquo;Because of this, the beginning my college experience was a smooth transition into higher education,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;Approaching college with organizational skills is what helps me maintain order. Becoming a PA has been a goal of mine for years now, and keeping that final goal in mind is what keeps me going every day.&rdquo;</span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span>The Associate of Science Degree with a field of study in Biology offers students the opportunity for many exciting career opportunities available in the biological sciences. Most of the career areas listed require training beyond the Associate of Science degree, and some will require a post-graduate degree, and include careers in Agriculture, Dentistry, Health Sciences, Medicine, and many more.</span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span>As a student at STC, Yanely says she has stayed active while employed as a direct wage employee with Student Activities, as well as an officer with Student Government Association (SGA). She is also a recent graduate with the Student Leadership Academy.</span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span>&ldquo;My peers should keep in mind that perseverance will help them succeed, as well has help them focus on their ultimate goal in life to improve persistence,&rdquo; Yanely said. &ldquo;New college students should have self-discipline because as we grow older, and more independence is given, self-motivation is required to get things done. ]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span><span><span>Despite a change in career plans, Lorna Montemayor says success in college has always been about striving to become better.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>Lorna is currently pursuing an Associate of Applied Science Cybersecurity Specialist. Initially entering STC as a dual-enrollment student while attending Valley View High School, Lorna began at STC after graduation in 2019.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>Harboring a lifelong fascination with art, Lorna said she began college with the hopes of one day entering a career as a graphic designer. As she took her classes at STC and began to research the job market however she became drawn to careers in IT, she said.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>&ldquo;STC was the ideal place to start. Not only was it financial beneficial, but the college also had professors and deans who truly wanted me to succeed,&rdquo; Lorna said. &ldquo;I started in high school and was happy to find teachers who were compassionate and caring when I first started a few of my basic classes.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>&ldquo;In addition, STC helped me grow as a person by helping me start reaching out and seeing the different career plans I could be taking due to the advice of thoughtful professors,&rdquo; Lorna said. &ldquo;In addition, becoming a Cybersecurity Specialist seemed ideal for my personality due to always wanting to solve problems and help those around me if I can, so I began the process of enrolling from there.&rdquo;</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>The Cybersecurity Specialist Associate of Applied Science and Certificate degrees are designed for students interested in entering the field of cybersecurity technologies.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>The degree prepares students to learn practices that are designed to protect networks, computers, programs and data from attack, damage, or unauthorized access. Cybersecurity Specialists at STC are trained in computer security, installing security software, network monitoring for security breaches, and responding to cyber-attacks.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>&ldquo;Success in college &ndash; that&rsquo;s what everyone wants but most see it as hard to achieve, and it can be but they shouldn&rsquo;t get downhearted from grades and exams. We all have our faults but we also have our strengths, follow your strengths and try to adapt to your faults,&rdquo; Lorna said.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>&ldquo;My message to my peers is to do their research on their respective careers and find people within the industry who can help you with information about the career plan ahead,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;In addition, before enrolling in a class, look into the professors to see how your semester will look like. Lastly, start looking into interning near the area. The job market is a competition, and if you don&rsquo;t have any experience in the field, then another competitor could get the respective job just from interning in a minimal tech field.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>&ldquo;Learning doesn&rsquo;t end with college, but it&rsquo;s up to you to continue learning after your degree is in your grasp,&rdquo; she said.</span></span></span></p>]]></content:encoded><pp:quotes><pp:quote>

]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span><span>Soon students at South Texas College pursuing a bachelor&rsquo;s degree in the Computer & Information Technologies Program (CITP) will have the opportunity to improve their ability for employment in the IT industry by graduating with both a bachelor&rsquo;s degree and a professional certificate from Google.</span></span></p>

<p><span><span>A $10,000 grant by Jobs for the Future (JFF) allows students in the CITP program the opportunity to complete a Google IT Support Professional Certificate while enrolled in the bachelor&rsquo;s degree program.</span></span></p>

<p><span><span>IT support professionals play an essential role in the lives of people across the world. From installing software and configuring network infrastructure to supporting cloud computing solutions and protecting computer systems from hackers, these professionals are an integral component in every industry.</span></span></p>

<p><span><span>&ldquo;The certificate impacts students by creating new career pathways,&rdquo; said Saeed Molki, Program Chair from the South Texas College Computer Science Department. &ldquo;It can enhance an individual&rsquo;s career by opening doors for career advancement.&rdquo;</span></span></p>

<p><span><span>Google, in collaboration with JFF, provides grants to community colleges in California, Colorado, Illinois, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Texas, and Wisconsin. The grants assist with the integration of the Google IT Support Professional Certificate into the college&rsquo;s IT curriculum and align with skills sought by employers.</span></span></p>

<p><span><span>&ldquo;Having both a Bachelor Degree and a Google IT Support Professional Certificate shows potential employers that our graduates are truly well rounded and ready to be a productive members of their team starting day one of their employment,&rdquo; said Dr. David Plummer, Executive Vice-President for Educational Programming and Student Achievement at South Texas College.</span></span></p><p><span><span>South Texas College is one of 100 community colleges across the country and four in the state of Texas currently offering the certificate program.</span></span></p><p><span><span>An initiative of Grow with Google, the certificate program is offered in partnership with Coursera, a leading online learning platform for higher education. The Google IT Support Professional Certificate course focuses on mastering fundamental skills in the IT workforce, including troubleshooting, customer service, networking, operating systems, system administration, and security.</span></span></p><p><span><span>The coursework includes a dynamic combination of interactive learning strategies and assessments, including video lectures, practice exercises, and supplemental reading, to support and enhance the learner&rsquo;s information technology skills.</span></span></p><p><span><span>The certificate program is only available to students in the Fall 2020 semester as part of the CITP 3306 Internet/Intranet Server Integration curriculum. After successfully finishing the Google IT Support Professional Certificate program, students are eligible to receive a scholarship between $200 to $300.</span></span></p><p><span><span>In preparation for this new offering, the faculty and lab assistants from the Computer Science department have completed the requirements to earn their own Google IT Support Professional Certificate.</span></span></p><p><span><span>&ldquo;The faculty believes that students will be very excited and enthusiastic about the opportunity to gain credibility, knowledge, and skills,&rdquo; said Nicholas Hinojosa, Assistant Program Chair from the South Texas College Computer Science Department.</span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span>The Bachelor of Applied Technology Degree (BAT) in Computer and Information Technologies (CIT) prepares students for successful careers in the field of CIT. Coursework balances between theoretical and technical competencies associated with the CIT profession to prepare graduates for many demands placed on CIT professionals. The degree prepares students with relevant, technical knowledge of CIT practices, to provide solutions for real-world problems and technical support for computer-based information systems. Technology-oriented coursework will form the core requirements for this program, with an emphasis on the application and implementation of current technologies.</span></span></span></span></span></p>]]></content:encoded><pp:quotes><pp:quote>

Staff with Student Activities will attempt to systematically distribute the covers to traditional graduates over the coming weeks.</em></p>
]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p>South Texas College symbolically has begun distributing degree covers, as well as cap and gown, and yard signs to graduating students beginning with the Bachelor&rsquo;s Program Monday morning.</p>

<p>Students are being contacted via INVITATION ONLY to come and pick up the degree covers commemorating their hard work, according to STC staff and faculty. The Office of Admissions and Records continues to review graduation applications and confer degrees, so graduates should expect to receive their diplomas in the mail by mid to late June.</p>

<p>&ldquo;The challenge is, since we have close to 2,000 traditional graduates or so, we cannot have them come in at the same time, so it was easier to do the Bachelor program graduates first,&rdquo; said Elibariki Nguma, Director of Student Activities and Wellness.</p>

<p>Dual Credit Programs has coordinated with partnering school districts to distribute degrees to their graduates.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Beginning tomorrow (Tuesday) district wide we are going to start distributing degree (covers) to other students,&rdquo; Nguma said. &ldquo;We cannot invite everybody the same day so students will be notified when to come in through their STC email. Since we also have pantry operations at the same time, we need to organize everything accordingly.</p>

<p>Distribution is taking place concurrently at STC&rsquo;s three campuses in Weslaco and Starr County as well as Pecan. Students are being asked via email invitation only to stop by and pick up their degree covers at scheduled times.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Students need to get an invite to come to campus through email telling them when to come on a certain day to come and pick up their degree,&rdquo; he said.</p>

<p>Faculty with STC&rsquo;s Bachelor programs were on hand in full regalia on Monday morning to distribute degrees to students.</p><p>&ldquo;We know that all of our students are always looking forward to this moment, to be able to walk and receive their diploma,&rdquo; said Dr. Ali Esmaeili, Dean for Math, Science, IT, and Bachelor Programs. &ldquo;We know this a dream come true for our students and unfortunately due to COVID-19, we still tried our best to make this celebratory for them as well as respect and honor them.</p><p>&ldquo;We are hoping that by being here with our cap and gown and giving them their diploma cover that they at least feel comfortable with the fact that they achieved their goal,&rdquo; Dr. Esmaeili said.</p><p>South Texas College still wants to plan a virtual commencement for graduating students by this summer. The college says that in the coming weeks, it plans to send information to students via email on how to submit personal photos and messages to be included in the ceremony.</p><p>Once those submissions are in, third-party company will include student photos on a web slide along with a personal message printed with the students&rsquo; name, degree, field of study, and honors.</p><p>&ldquo;We are very pleased to have the opportunity to offer our students a virtual graduation ceremony and wish all graduates the best in their future endeavors,&rdquo; said STC Registrar and Director of Student Records and Registrar Cindy Blanco.</p>]]></description><category><![CDATA[news,STEM-News,STEM]]></category>

                        <title>South Texas College Community Finds Solution for Protecting Migratory Birds</title>

]]></pp:boilerplate><description><![CDATA[<p><strong>McAllen, Texas--</strong> In 2017, a new architectural gem named the North Academic Building, also known as Building P, was built on the South Texas College Pecan Campus. With its modern design, impressive three stories, and welcoming atmosphere, it became a popular hub of campus activity. However, its substantial iridescent plate-glass windows and impressive height began to attract an unexpected type of attention.</p>

<p>Seemingly without explanation, birds, sometimes more than a dozen a day, were striking the tall windows and dying upon impact. This phenomenon was alarming, to say the least, and especially concerning for those who worked and studied in the building on a daily basis.</p>

<p>Students, faculty and staff from a variety of disciplines and departments soon teamed up to study the situation and find solutions.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Texas is very rich in bird species, both local and migratory,&rdquo; says Dr. Ruben R. Garces, a biology instructor at the Starr Campus. He has an interest in birds and was part of the team that worked to stop the accidents from occurring.</p>

<p>Dr. Garces says the Rio Grande Valley sees a large number of birds flying through in different seasons of the year simply because of geography. The region is located beneath a major migration corridor known as a flyway.</p>

<p>The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department says some 615 species have been documented across the state, 333 of them migratory, meaning they&rsquo;re flying through on their way to North America, Central America or South America.&nbsp;The species range in size from tiny hummingbirds to the turkey vulture, which has a wingspan of up to 6 feet.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Most birds won&rsquo;t fly over the sea, and most won&rsquo;t fly over deserts because there&rsquo;s nothing to eat,&rdquo; says Dr. Garces.&nbsp;That means many of them end up on a path directly through the Rio Grande Valley.</p>

<p>The location and the three-story building&rsquo;s plate glass windows made an unexpected &mdash; but deadly &mdash; combination.</p>

<p>&ldquo;It&rsquo;s not surrounded by other buildings,&rdquo; said Dr. Maria Cervantes, chairman of the biology department. &ldquo;All of the windows are reflecting sky, unlike the other buildings. The birds kept flying straight into the windows because they&rsquo;re so reflective.&rdquo;</p>

<p>While birds hitting the glass of modern buildings is a generally common problem nationwide, usually little more is done than having personnel sweep up the fallen creatures. South Texas College was adamant that they had to do more.</p><p>She and Andrea Fuentes of the speech department began logging the number of birds killed and their specific locations. Dr. Bean says the&nbsp;American Bird Conservancy&nbsp;estimates that up to a billion birds die every year in the United States from colliding with windows. They soon reached out to the biology department, and several others, to find a way to make the building visible and to protect the birds.</p><p>The solution was to install WindowAlert decals on the outside surface of each three-foot-by-three-foot plate of glass on the north side of the building, Dr. Bean says. The decals reflect ultraviolet light invisible to humans but highly visible to birds, appearing almost like a stoplight. From inside the building, the decals look like little more than a frosted portion of glass.</p><p>Dr. Bean says the first decals were applied during peak migration, and that the team has continued to monitor their effectiveness. &ldquo;If successful, the plan will be to continue reapplying the decals every six to nine months,&rdquo; she says.</p><p>Dr. Cervantes says having a team form and tackle the problem together was a rewarding experience that exemplified the community spirit of South Texas College.</p><p>&ldquo;Actually, it was the first time I felt [that] the different departments had the same interests, and more than anything, we all had different ways we thought we could address these concerns,&rdquo; Dr. Cervantes adds.</p><p>For her department, the focus was on biology.</p><p>&ldquo;When do the birds migrate? Why is it called a corridor? What can we do to teach students and the community to protect birds during the migration?&rdquo; she elaborates. For others, it was researching the technical solutions, observing flight patterns, and more. The Department of Architectural and Engineering Design faculty will be teaching students to take all aspects into consideration when designing a structure, especially the environmental impact of the buildings.</p><p>The one common goal was protecting nature, and thanks to the passion and grit of the South Texas College community, they have found a worthwhile solution.</p>]]></description><pp:quotes><pp:quote>

At the end of the day, among the top five teams who were recognized as victorious, four were drawn from students of STC&rsquo;s own dual enrollment computer science classrooms!</p>

<p>Hosted by UTRGV Computer Science Department faculty member Gustavo Dietrich, the annual competition is an exhibition of problem-solving prowess, programming skills, and time management. Students are tasked with tackling ten programming challenges of increasing complexity in a period of only two hours and are awarded points for each solution that successfully solves a previously unseen judges&rsquo; set of input data. This year&rsquo;s challenges included problems such as writing programs to identify triangles given triples of side lengths, and calculating a user&rsquo;s cell phone bill based on daily usage data.</p>

<p>At the end of the day, despite many of them competing for the first time against veteran teams, the 2<sup>nd</sup>, 3<sup>rd</sup>, 4<sup>th</sup>, and 5<sup>th</sup> place spots were filled with teams of students pulled from the classrooms of Computer Science department faculty members Ernesto Gonzalez at Sharyland HS, Jose Jaramillo at Sharyland Pioneer HS, and Lucian Silcox and Nicolas Gutierrez at the STC Pecan campus. The first place spot went to the team from Edinburg North HS, sponsored by Miguel Ramirez, with a stunning performance!                         <title>STC students in the SEA-PHAGES program discover novel Microbacterium Phage</title>

As a part of the 12<sup>th</sup> cohort of the program, STC becomes one of the two institutions selected from Texas for the year 2019 -2020.</p>

<p>The program is divided into a two-semester course in which students hunt for bacteriophage in their first semester. A bacteriophage is a type of virus that infects bacteria. By the end of the first-semester student not only have to isolate bacteriophage from the environmental soil samples but also must purify and submit for electron microscopy imaging and submit DNA for archiving and sequencing. After isolating their phage, students have the privilege of naming it. Then, the same student cohort moves to the next semester and carries out gene annotation. Gene annotation is a process where the gene is analyzed for their start and stop codons, and protein function.</p>

<p>Amazingly, the first batch of 14 students in this course achieved the success that is totally unheard of in this program. Generally, 1 to 2 purified viruses are isolated for first-timers in the program. Our students were able to obtain not 2 but <strong>12 bacteriophages</strong> of bacterial host <em>Microbacterium foliorum</em> B-24224 SEA!</p>

<p>Also, it came as a pleasant surprise when we heard from the program director of the SEA-PHAGES program that <em>Microbacterium</em> Phage <em>&ldquo;</em>Delagarza&rdquo; is a singleton Phage and that is relatively new as not much is known about the characteristics of the genome of singleton phages. &ldquo;Delagarza&rdquo; phage was named by Daniela De La Garza in honor of her father.</p>

<p>Several studies have recognized the importance of research experience during undergrad education. Students with research experience have a higher chance of achieving academic success, learn to work in a team and acquire skills necessary to go into graduate school. Under the guidance and mentorship of Dr. Thomas Ndolo, SEA-PHAGES students have transformed from mere high school students to scientists. The skill and experience they are getting in this program will help them achieve unprecedented academic and career success in the future. These students are also on their way to publish in prestigious journals reporting the discovery of new phages.</p>]]></description><category><![CDATA[STEM,STEM-News]]></category>

The paper appeared in the November 2019 issue of Current Research in Material Chemistry. Both Larissa and Mariela joined Dr. M.S. Zaman in this review research on Polymorphic Crystals. Their work has led to a conference presentation titled &ldquo;Polymorphic Crystals in Medicine, A Review&rdquo; at the annual conference of UTRGV School of Medicine Research Symposium in September 2019, and a full-length manuscript as mentioned above. This work was a collaboration with Dr. Bidisha Sengupta of Stephen F. Austin State University, Nacogdoches, TX and Dr. Pradeep Sengupta of University of Calcutta, India.Ms. Barroso is expected to graduate from STC in Fall 2020 and plans to continue her education at UTRGV in the areas of Biomedical Sciences.                         <title>Green Beetles under the Microscope</title>

A group of students at South Texas College knows that isn&rsquo;t true. They are working on a project with Dr. David Robacker at the Weslaco campus to identify new species of beetles from Mexico. Every week on Friday afternoon students from the <em>Dual Enrollment Medical Science Academy (DEMSA)</em> gather in a laboratory with their microscopes to dissect and examine green-, white- and red-striped jewel scarabs that live in montane pine forests all over Mexico. Right now, and since the species was first described scientifically more than 150 years ago, these beetles have borne the name <em>Chrysina adelaida</em>. Members of this genus <em>Chrysina</em> comprise a group that includes species from Texas and Arizona all the way through Central America to Ecuador. Many of the species are metallic gold or silver, but the species in Mexico are mainly green. Right now there are about 120 known species according to experts Dave Hawks (Riverside, CA) and Jose Monzon Sierra (Guatemala City, Guatemala), but everyone who loves these magnificent insects believes there are many more waiting to be recognized. Most of these probably live in remote mountains where roads don&rsquo;t exist and scientists rarely go. But our students know that some new species may be right under our noses.</p>

<p>Last year, students Norma Barrientos, Brianna Miranda, Naidely Castillo, and Esmer Aguilar began the work and took it to a point where emerging evidence implicated one particular population (sorry, can&rsquo;t say where due to proprietary considerations) as different from nominate <em>C. adelaida</em> in central Mexico. Most of those students have since moved on to new adventures. Enter current team leader Naidely Castillo and fellow students Alejandra Escobedo, Nathan Martinez, Galilea Casas, and Guadelupe Martinez who plow through genitalic microdissections with ease to look for morphological differences that distinguish populations from different places as probable different species. The premise of the work is that if male genitalic capsules and female genicalic plates differ between beetles from different places, they must be different species. This idea is based on a long-held tenet called mechanical isolation that means different species may have different genitalic structures that prevent them from mating with each other because they simply don&rsquo;t fit together during copulation.</p>

<p>So, are there any morphological differences? The students can tell you that it is hard to discern by looking so we turn to careful quantitative methods. Math always seems to be the answer. Using a powerful dissecting microscope equipped with a built-in camera system (courtesy of the STC Biology Department), the students obtain images precise to tenths of a millimeter and determine the sizes and angles of the genitalic structures that simply could not be measured another way. Naidely has witnessed the results for 6 males from the nominate population compared with 7 from the study population and she can attest. &ldquo;Yes, we can see that they are different&rdquo; referring to males from the two groups. Statistical analysis of the data confirms what she observed. &ldquo;It is exciting to realize we are discovering new species that no one else even knows about&rdquo;.</p>

<p>There is still a lot of work to do but the research is progressing quickly to a conclusion &ndash; maybe by the end of spring semester 2020. &ldquo;The reward is knowing we are doing science and seeing that these beetles are different, and then that the species we are discovering will get a name that will last forever&rdquo;, says Naidely. Indeed, the students themselves will get to suggest a name that will become part of the legacy of <em>Chrysina</em> taxonomy.</p>]]></description><category><![CDATA[STEM,STEM-News]]></category>

]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>At 16, Daniela De la garza is harvesting soil samples from her Sharyland backyard for a South Texas College research project, and there&rsquo;s a small chance that what she finds could leave to a groundbreaking discovery.</p>

<p>De la garza is one of 19 Dual Enrollment students in the Medical Science Academy at STC that is hunting for new viruses in her very own community as part of the prestigious program, SEA-PHAGES &mdash; Science Education Alliance-Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science. If a unique virus is found, it could ultimately be used as an alternative to antibiotics.</p>

<p>SEA-PHAGES is a nationwide collaboration in which undergraduates from 177 institutions search for new bacteriophages, which are viruses that eat bacterial cells.</p>

<p>The Howard Hughes Medical Institute established SEA-PHAGES to encourage interest in biological sciences by providing undergraduates with valuable research opportunities. The institute runs the program with the University of Pittsburgh.</p>

<p>STC is the first institution in the Rio Grande Valley to join SEA-PHAGES, says Dr. Maria Y. Cervantes, chair of STC&rsquo;s Biology Department. The program is a great way to get students involved in research and promote STEM fields.</p>

<p>&ldquo;We&rsquo;re very unique especially because we are a border town, so the expectation is that we probably do have bacteriophages that are very unique to the area,&rdquo; Dr. Cervantes says.</p>

<p>The College&rsquo;s participation is also significant because there are few laboratory research projects at community colleges. Most of the students in the SEA-PHAGES course at STC are high school juniors and seniors.</p>

<p>&ldquo;I just thought it was really interesting that we could have the chance to find something ourselves,&rdquo; says De la garza, who is in the first group of students to take the course at STC. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s one thing to hear about discoveries but it&rsquo;s another thing to be going through it myself.&rdquo;</p>

<p>The course is designed as an introductory lab course for students, Dr. Cervantes says. The SEA-PHAGES program has found that students who take part in this authentic lab experience are more likely to continue studying the sciences than those who take traditional biology lab courses.</p>

<p>De la garza has always had dreams of working in the healthcare field. &ldquo;I&rsquo;ve always wanted to do something medical,&rdquo; she says. &ldquo;I&rsquo;ve always just wanted to help people.&rdquo;</p><p>&ldquo;The students are going to experience something that is new, something that has not been done here before, with an opportunity to open doors to a life of science,&rdquo; Dr. Cervantes says.</p><p>For those who want to go to medical school, it shows them how science goes hand in hand with that career, she explains. The tools and methods physicians use to treat patients all started in a lab.</p><p>&ldquo;So exposing the students to that very first step in medicine, which is learning how organisms work, how drugs work, is going to hopefully give them a better appreciation for when they become doctors and move onto something bigger and better,&rdquo; Dr. Cervantes says. &ldquo;And hopefully the students will be encouraged to not just pursue their associate, but their bachelor&rsquo;s and then a higher level degree &ndash; graduate school, medical school, and the sky&rsquo;s the limit for them.&rdquo;</p><p>The students&rsquo; research so far has exceeded expectations, Dr. Cervantes says. &ldquo;They told us if you get three students to purify a virus out of a 20, you are doing great. You know what these students did? Fourteen out of the 19 have successfully purified a virus,&rdquo; she says.</p><p>The prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria makes this area of study particularly important and timely, Dr. Cervantes says. There are so many viruses being found that the possibility the students have discovered new ones is very high, she says.</p><p>Recently, a virus identified by university students in the SEA-PHAGES program helped cure an England girl&rsquo;s antibiotic-resistant respiratory infection, Dr. Cervantes says. The girl received an injection of a cocktail of three viruses that specifically fought this bacteria.</p><p>The potential for STC students to make an impact in microbiology is &ldquo;phenomenal,&rdquo; says STC President Shirley A. Reed, who visited the lab to learn about their work. &ldquo;Just think if we actually could identify a selected virus that would eat bacteria. We wouldn&rsquo;t be using prescription drugs to kill bacteria,&rdquo; Dr. Reed says. &ldquo;And I understand viruses are rather smart critters; they evolve and change. Maybe they can be trained to go after cancer cells.&rdquo;</p><p>Most of the students took soil samples from near their homes during their research. They will find out next semester if their viruses are unique. If so, they will be able to name them and submit them to the depository.</p><p>&ldquo;We&rsquo;ve got very interesting results,&rdquo; says Dr. Thomas Ndolo, who teaches the course, adding that the phages students are collecting look very different.</p><p>The students are engaged in the research, he says. They are meticulous and some are spending extra time in the laboratory. It took 10 weeks for them to develop their phages.</p><p>Students in the class who did not find any phages have teamed up with others who have, says De la garza. They are preparing to send their samples to the University of North Texas, which will use electron microscopes to visualize the viruses and send back photos.</p><p>In the spring semester, the STC students will perform DNA sequencing and analyze the genomes through bioinformatics. They will compare their phages to those that are already in the repository to see if they have something unique.</p><p>&ldquo;We&rsquo;ll be having them use a lot of computer programs, where they&rsquo;ll be putting in their DNA sequence and comparing it to different databases, sort of like forensic science, but in this case we&rsquo;re trying to identify the virus and see if it&rsquo;s something that is worth publishing and looking into,&rdquo; Dr. Cervantes says.</p><p>The students are also getting valuable experience in the long and labor-intensive research process, and the highs and lows that accompany it. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s on your way of getting to your destination that you&rsquo;re learning, that you&rsquo;re going through trials, that you&rsquo;re feeling heartbroken and then excited,&rdquo; Dr. Cervantes says.</p><p>They will also have the satisfaction of contributing to an extensive body of knowledge that expands with each addition to the Howard Hughes Medical Institute&rsquo;s national library of phages, she says.</p><p>&ldquo;South Texas College encourages the pursuit of the sciences to ensure that our students are prepared for high-demand, high-skilled workforce and academic opportunities in healthcare, research, and related fields,&rdquo; said Mr. Paul R. ]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span>In the fall of 2015, the Department of Mathematics was awarded a sub-award from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley as part of their National Science Foundation (NSF) grant award, An Ecosystem for Success in Engineering and Computer Science in Rio South Texas (Award #1317661). The goal of this project was to support students interested in Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM), with specific interest in students majoring in Engineering, Computer Science and Mathematics.</span></p>

<p><span>A sub-award of $58,893.00 was provided to South Texas College&rsquo;s Department of Mathematics with Mario J. Morin serving as the Subrecipient Principal Investigator to implement programming that would provide structure for said STEM students to accelerate and succeed in their mathematics coursework as well as to provide support for students majoring in Engineering to have formal advisement to support transfer to UTRGV&rsquo;s College of Engineering. The Department of Mathematics used the monies to create an accelerated pathway for students to complete both a College Algebra & Pre-Calculus course sequence or a Pre-Calculus & Calculus I sequence in one semester, as most STEM programs require a minimum attainment of Calculus I in their degree plans (both Engineering and Mathematics require Calculus I as an entry-level course and pre-requisite to additional coursework).</span></p>

<p><span>Over the course of the three-year award, students showcased a higher success rate (>10%) in the accelerated course sequence model as compared to the single-course traditional 16-week course option. <p>Mr. Jeremy Hinck, STC Physical Science instructor was the coordinator for the region wide event, which was designed to educate Rio Grande Valley residents about the risks, dangers, and actions to take before, during, and after a hurricane.</p>

<p>The expo included exhibits and booths which provided information regarding hurricane awareness and preparedness. The camp was geared towards youth of ages 12 to 17. There were 20 kids that participated in each week long camp. These participants were selected amongst many applicants via a competitive selection process.</span><span>The Waterbotics program goes beyond teaching kids about the basics of robotics such as programming, mechanical design and controls. <p>Impactful, high-quality undergraduate research opportunities often are few and far between even at well funded four-year institutions with strong research traditions. And yet STC &mdash; a two-year college serving a predominantly minority Hispanic population that includes many students who are the first in their family to pursue higher education &mdash; is doing just that.</p>

<p>Through a program known as SEA-PHAGES, STC is rising to the challenge and offering authentic, valuable, accessible undergraduate research opportunities designed to foster scientific inquiry and discovery among a relatively large cohort of 24 students.</p>

<p>The Science Education Association-Phage Hunters Advancing Genomic and Evolutionary Science (SEA-PHAGES) is a program established by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and comprising a nationwide collaboration of 177 institutions that enlists students to help discover new bacteriophage species. Bacteriophages are a very diverse group of viruses that specifically attack bacteria. Given that bacteria evolve resistance to antibiotics very quickly, bacteriophages&rsquo; natural tendency to mount lethal attacks on bacteria holds great promise for use in fighting resilient infectious diseases.</p><p>Featured on the &ldquo;SEA-PHAGES in the News&rdquo; section of the SEA-PHAGES website, many news stories describe the journeys of the participating students over the course of the 11 years since the program&rsquo;s inception, highlighting their profound experiences in the pursuit of scientific discovery.</p><p>One such story is that of Jade Connor, who joined the SEA-PHAGES program at Baylor University. Connor, a senior biology major from Lewisville, Texas, interested in pre-med, was among 24 applicants selected prior to the start of their freshman year2.</p><p>&ldquo;In high school, I wanted to be a journalist. I took AP Biology during my senior year because I wanted to get science out of the way,&rdquo; Connor said. She explained that after watching a documentary in that same biology class about cracking your personal genetic code, she was shocked and inspired &ndash;&ndash; forever changing her career path.</p><p>In the SEA-PHAGES program, Connor&rsquo;s interest in research was given space to blossom. ]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The future will be fueled by &ldquo;girl power.&rdquo;</p><p>In South Texas and beyond, women in technology-focused careers are smashing old stigmas and opening new doors. It&rsquo;s not just a moment, but a <em>movement</em>&hellip; and career education is on the front lines.</p><p>&ldquo;The bridge of success for STEM careers is not only for males anymore,&rdquo; says South Texas College Manufacturing Tech graduate Samantha Salazar, now succeeding as a Machinist for Priority Tooling Solutions in McAllen. &ldquo;These women have shown it can be done.&rdquo;</p><p>Salazar is one of many STC alums breaking barriers in the dynamic world of high-tech. With technology driving the new economy, demand for career-educated professionals in future-focused fields like engineering, manufacturing and IT is reaching critical mass&hellip; and STC grads are stepping up to the challenge.</p><p>&ldquo;A lot of people think that only men can do the job, but there are a lot of women in technology fields -- and not just office jobs,&rdquo; says Regal Beloit&rsquo;s Jessica Adame, who, like Salazar, parlayed her STC degree into a rewarding &ndash; if &ldquo;non-traditional&rdquo; &ndash; living in a tech-focused career. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m proud that I&rsquo;m a girl doing this job.&rdquo;</p><p>As tech-heavy careers in South Texas become more dependent on higher education &ndash; not to mention higher-<em>paying</em> &ndash; the &ldquo;dirty jobs&rdquo; stigma surrounding tech-focused careers has begun to erode. Meanwhile, a national effort to introduce female students to technology-intensive &ldquo;STEM&rdquo; careers at a younger age has set a foundation for a seismic shift in the way that young women perceive these careers.</p><p>&ldquo;Females in particular don&rsquo;t always feel like they fit in when they are outnumbered,&rdquo; explains Erika Guerra, Advanced Manufacturing Tech instructor at STC. &ldquo;As a young female student in the STEM field, I did not see many female classmates that I could relate to. &hellip; Now that I teach, I still see some of the same statistics with students entering these STEM programs.</p><p>&ldquo;When it comes to helping break stereotypes, I&rsquo;m all in.&rdquo;</p><p>South Texas College has made a mission of boosting opportunities for female professionals in tech fields, through its Technology Campus. In February, the College hosted its annual &ldquo;Wonder Women in the Making&rdquo; event, which invited 170 fifth- and sixth-graders from local school districts to participate. The event included live demonstrations and speakers, covering tech-focused fields like welding, manufacturing, robotics, and more.</p><p>This month, STC will host its ninth-annual &ldquo;Women in Technology Expo,&rdquo; featuring guest speakers, entertainment, live tech demonstrations, and an awards presentation honoring industry leaders. The event will again incorporate the full resources of career education programs.</p><p>&ldquo;The purpose of the Women in Technology event is to promote careers that are not traditionally pursued by females,&rdquo; says Angelita Teniente, faculty member in the Information Technology department at STC. &ldquo;In addition to showcasing the various programs &hellip; another component of the event is dedicated to honoring and celebrating women from the community who exemplify the movement toward &lsquo;breaking the glass ceiling&rsquo; by excelling in careers normally dominated by their male counterparts.&rdquo;</p><p>Among the surprises for Expo attendees will be mini-cupcakes, baked by the Culinary Arts department, a 3-D printing demo, courtesy of STC Manufacturing Tech students, and even a career education &ldquo;fashion show,&rdquo; featuring Fire Science, Police Academy, and Welding students (among others) trolling the runway in full program gear. By seeing other young women succeeding in tech programs, Guerra hopes that the next generation of South Texas professionals will be inspired.</p><p>&ldquo;In order for women to be successful in these fields, they need to be introduced to the opportunities early enough to spark their interest, and they need to be shown that they have an entire support system to help them succeed,&rdquo; says Sara Lozano, Chair of the Architectural and Engineering Design department at STC. &ldquo;As a woman and a leader in this field, it is my responsibility to open those doors, especially for women.&rdquo;</p><p>&ldquo;It&rsquo;s an amazing event,&rdquo; adds Dr. Esmeralda Adame, Assistant Dean of STC's Business, Public Safety and Technology Division. &ldquo;We&rsquo;ve put a lot more effort into trying to raise the awareness, to educate local females on what tech really is.</p><p>&ldquo;Changing minds, little-by-little, we&rsquo;re getting there.&rdquo;</p><p>Aside from the obvious benefit of earlier exposure to tech-related opportunities, STC Technology Campus administrators see the annual Expo as a way to raise the profile of specific programs, particularly those seeing sharp increases in workforce demand. These programs include, among others: Computer and Networking Specialists (expected to see an 11% boost in job openings by 2026, with an average annual salary of $52,810); Architectural and Civil Engineering Techs (9% growth / $51,620 average salary); and Emergency Medical Technicians (15% / $33,380).</p><p>According to Dr. Adame, who works with local industries to hone her department&rsquo;s curriculum on an ongoing basis, the key to responding to workforce needs in these critical fields is <em>not being afraid to</em> <em>listen</em>.</p><p>&ldquo;We work very closely with our partners and we listen &mdash; they&rsquo;re the ones that are going to hire our students,&rdquo; says Adame, who has already seen evidence of the success of STC&rsquo;s efforts in local hiring. &ldquo;Everyone is asking: &lsquo;Did you go to South Texas College? &hellip; Because we kind of want you to have hands-on experience.&rsquo;&rdquo;</p><p>Every day, new success stories are surfacing. There&rsquo;s Christina Aguilar, graduate of the Electrician Technology program and prior Women in Technology Expo attendee, who is now a faculty member at STC, paying her knowledge and inspiration forward. From the Networking Specialists program, there&rsquo;s Veronica Gonzalez, a U.S. military veteran who has parlayed her tech-focused STC education into a career with a prominent network technologies company. And with more female students connecting to STEM opportunities through events like the Women in Technology Expo and Wonder Women in the Making, the future of South Texas industry will inevitably be driven by tech-savvy women.</p><p>&ldquo;We definitely feel a great responsibility to be part of the STEM movement for women,&rdquo; says Teniente. &ldquo;One of our core values at South Texas College is to provide opportunity through access and support for students to achieve their academic and career goals, so we are very committed to supporting and providing success to careers in the STEM fields.&rdquo;</p><p>Salazar agrees, but says there remains work to be done.</p><p>&ldquo;The next stigma that we as women should overcome is the &lsquo;female engineer,&rsquo; the &lsquo;female machinist,&rsquo; the &ldquo;female scientist,&rdquo; suggests Salazar. &ldquo;As proud as I am for being able to partake in a movement like this, I would like to see it just become a &lsquo;machinist,&rsquo; &lsquo;engineer,&rsquo; &lsquo;scientist.&rsquo;</p>]]></content:encoded><pp:quotes><pp:quote>

]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Students with South Texas College&rsquo;s Engineers Club brought home the gold following a whirlwind month of designing, manufacturing and ultimately testing their custom-made electric vehicle.</p>

<p>The students tested their expertise in STEM while working as a team and conquering challenges at the 2nd annual Green Power USA HESTC Electric Car Competition held at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley&rsquo;s Brownsville campus April 5-6.</p>

<p>STC&rsquo;s Future Engineers Club &ldquo;No. 28&rdquo; car earned first place in the Institution of Higher Education category beating out Texas A&M Kingsville and UTRGV after stiff competition.</p>

<p>&ldquo;For us to actually have a team that placed first feels really great,&rdquo; said Future Engineers Club President, Berenice Padilla, who is majoring in Civil Engineering at STC. &ldquo;It felt great to coordinate and motivate our team and to ensure we were on our way to success. We proved ourselves on Saturday.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Students used electric car kits from GreenPower USA, a national organization based in Huntsville, Ala., which includes as its mission, the advancement of education in the subjects of sustainable engineering and technology to young people.</p><p><span>GreenPower organizes similar races across the nation. In Brownsville, South Texas College was among 26 teams that presented their cars, which they then raced for 90 minutes around a track created at the UTRGV campus.</span></p><p><span>Competitors were judged in three areas including a video segment produced by the crew, a presentation about the improvements made to the vehicle, and the performance of the car during the race itself.</span></p><p><span>&ldquo;We put in a lot of hours in this, and we had to invest time in order to make mechanical, electrical and thermodynamic modifications to the car,&rdquo; said Adan Gonzalez, a student with the club who also assisted in putting the vehicle together.</span></p><p><span>&ldquo;It was quite a task because our team was formed maybe five weeks prior to the competition but we prioritized above all the temperature of the motor,&rdquo; Gonzalez said. &ldquo;The crew designed a custom-made heat sink that was manufactured at our own Technology Campus, and we saw a lot of improvement with that.&rdquo;</span></p>]]></content:encoded><pp:quotes><pp:quote>
