As a student in South Texas College’s (STC) Diagnostic Medical Sonography program, Reyes is passionate about women’s health and hopes to make a lasting difference by providing compassionate, high-quality care for every patient she serves.

“I want women to feel welcomed in receiving the proper healthcare," she said. "That's what inspired me to pursue diagnostic medical sonography.”

When it came time to choose a college, STC stood out because of its supportive, student-centered environment.

“I chose STC because of the welcoming environment and its close involvement with students,” she said.

During her time here, Reye’s found more than an education. Building friendships with classmates from diverse backgrounds has become one of the most meaningful parts of her college experience.

“My favorite part has been meeting students from different backgrounds with whom I have formed unbreakable connections,” she said.

The journey hasn’t been without obstacles. Balancing several demanding courses at once challenged her both academically and personally, but with the help of tutoring through the Center for Learning Excellence (CLE) and the encouragement of family and friends, she remained focused on her goals.

“My family and peers have been my biggest source of emotional support, and tutoring helped me stay on track,” she said.

Her greatest inspiration has always been her mother, whose work ethic and perseverance continue to motive her every day.

“She is very hardworking and persevering, and I hope to share those same qualities one day,” she said.

After earning her degree, Reyes plans to become both a certified phlebotomy technician and a diagnostic medical sonographer while continuing to expand her knowledge by learning new techniques in both fields.

She credits STC with giving her the confidence to pursue those goals by providing hands-on training, technical knowledge and the professional skills needed to enter the workforce.

“STC has prepared me through hands-on learning, professionalism and even teaching me how to prepare for job interviews,” she said.

With determination, compassion and a desire to continue learning, Reyes is preparing to make a meaningful impact in healthcare while representing the values of STC long after graduation.

Graduating this week from STC's Police Academy and earning his Basic Peace Officer Certificate, the 28-year-old Pharr native is preparing to begin a career in law enforcement after years of exploring different career paths. 

“I didn't always know that I wanted to be a police officer,” Flores said. “But I've always been told that I carried myself that way and had the traits to do this kind of work.” 

After high school, Flores attended STC and explored several fields of study, including Criminal Justice and the Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program. Although financial challenges prevented him from completing the PTA program, he continued building experience through careers in healthcare and youth services. 

Flores worked as a phlebotomist, laboratory technician and later as a youth care worker at a children's shelter. It was through those experiences that he discovered his passion for helping others and serving his community. 

“I felt like I belonged there,” Flores said. “I was serving, protecting and helping however I could. That's when I realized law enforcement was the next step for me.” 

While taking Criminal Justice courses at STC, Flores learned about the Police Academy and knew he had found the right path. Looking back, he said he believes every job and life experience prepared him for where he is today. 

“Everything worked hand in hand,” Flores said. “I feel like everything was meant to happen so I could be right here.” 

Known for his positive attitude and approachable personality, Flores believes law enforcement is more than enforcing laws; it is also about building trust and serving the public with compassion.

“You have to be approachable and genuinely want to help people,” he said. “You're there to serve your community.” 

As he prepares for graduation, Flores describes the academy as both challenging and rewarding. 

“It's been a roller coaster of emotions,” he said. “There are hard days, but as long as you stay focused on why you started, you keep going.” 

After graduation, Flores hopes to begin his career with the Pharr Police Department, fulfilling a long-standing goal of serving the community he proudly calls home. 

Reflecting on his time at STC, Flores said he is grateful for the opportunities and resources that helped him reach this milestone and begin the next chapter of his journey

A Vocational Nursing graduate, the 28-year-old is set to earn his Associate Degree in Nursing this December and hopes to build a career supporting patients and families while making a meaningful difference in their lives.

"I want to do my part and be the kind of nurse that patients and families can count on during their most difficult moments," Garcia said. "When people are at their lowest point, I want to help them get back to where they once were."

While Garcia always knew he wanted a career helping others, Nursing was not his original plan. After graduating from high school in 2015, he enrolled at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), where he studied Nursing and Biology while considering a future as either a physician or a nurse.

During that time, his priorities shifted when his grandmother's health began to decline. Following complications that led to the amputation of one of her legs and later a second amputation, Garcia stepped away from college to help care for her at home.

"My focus was with my grandmother," Garcia said. "She was my priority. I wanted to make sure she had everything she needed, so I would help her walk around the house, work through her physical therapy and support her however I could."

Caring for his grandmother gave him a firsthand look at the impact compassionate caregivers can have on a patient's quality of life and solidified his decision to pursue a career in Nursing.

He enrolled in STC's ADN program in 2023, but faced another setback when an illness caused him to fall behind and prevented him from completing the semester.

Rather than giving up, he enrolled in STC's Vocational Nursing program, a hands-on pathway that prepares students to become licensed vocational nurses through classroom instruction, clinical training and direct patient care experience.

"It really prepared me for the ADN program," Garcia said. “By the time I came back, I already had experience working with patients and understood things like medications and disease processes. Instead of learning everything for the first time, I was able to build on what I already knew.”

Garcia graduated from the Vocational Nursing program in 2025, passed the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN) on his first attempt and began working in pediatric home health while continuing his education through STC's LVN-to-ADN bridge pathway.

Throughout his journey, Garcia said one of his greatest sources of support was his family, especially his parents and his fiancée Ruth Frias, who recently graduated from STC's ADN program. The couple met in 2018 and later found themselves pursuing the same career path.

"My parents have always encouraged me to keep going, no matter what challenges came my way," Garcia said. "And my fiancée pushes me to do my best. She knows what I'm capable of, even when I doubt myself. I wouldn't be here without her."

Despite facing setbacks at different points in their academic journeys, Garcia said having a strong support system and someone who understood the demands of nursing school made all the difference.

"Having people who believe in you and encourage you to keep going means a lot," Garcia said. "Their support motivates me to keep working toward my goals."

Today, Garcia balances nursing school with his part-time work as a licensed vocational nurse and as a tutor at STC's Center for Learning Excellence, helping fellow Nursing students navigate many of the same challenges he once faced.

" I've been in their shoes before," Garcia said. " Seeing someone understand a concept or gain confidence in themselves is one of the most rewarding parts of being a tutor."

After earning his ADN this December, Garcia plans to continue his education by pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, with long-term goals of becoming a nurse practitioner or certified registered nurse anesthetist.

He also hopes to work in a cardiac intensive care unit, where he can care for critically ill patients while supporting their families through difficult circumstances.

"I like the idea of being in the ICU because you're not only caring for the patient, but you're also helping the family through a difficult time," Garcia said. "Families are worried and scared and being able to support them is something that's really meaningful to me."

The 20-year-old is now pursuing a path toward earning her associate degree in Nursing, hoping to one day provide the same compassion and care that helped her family through one of its most difficult times.

“Spending four months in the hospital with my brother changed everything for me,” she said. “I saw how the nurses cared for him and the other patients, and that’s what made me want to go into nursing. I love kids, and I want to help make them feel better.”

The Mission native initially dreamed of becoming a lawyer, but everything changed during her senior year of high school when her younger brother, then 2 years old, faced a serious medical condition that required extensive care.

When he was released from the hospital, Garcia’s path became clear. After graduating high school, she enrolled at STC and began taking the prerequisite courses needed to apply to the college’s Nursing program.

“I chose STC because I wanted to stay close to my family,” she said. “I had also heard really good things about the nursing program, so it felt like the right place for me.”

Though the journey has not been easy, Garcia said the experience has taught her patience and perseverance.

“The classes are not easy, 100%,” she said. “But I want to finish. I know it’s something I must push through because I want to help people.”

Since 2024, Garcia has also worked as a student worker with Student Activities and Wellness at the Health Science Professions campus, helping organize biweekly events that give healthcare students an opportunity to relieve stress and recharge.

“It has been so good. I love what I do here,” she said. “I enjoy helping students and being part of something that supports them. It has been an incredible experience.”

Beyond her work-study role, Garcia is actively involved in the Student Government Association and Student Leadership Academy, experiences she said have helped her build friendships and feel more connected to campus life.

“I love making friends and talking to people,” she said. “That’s basically what I get to do every day, and it’s one of my favorite parts about being at STC.”

Through her involvement, Garcia said she has built meaningful relationships that have helped shape her academic path and future goals.

Now, Garcia plans to apply to STC’s Vocational Nursing program as a stepping stone toward the Associate Degree Nursing program and eventually a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, all with the goal of one day working as a pediatric nurse.

“Through the relationships I’ve built here, I’ve learned that the Vocational Nursing program feels like the right path for me,” she said. “I’m excited for what’s ahead. I see myself being here for a long time and continuing to grow alongside this community.”

Weeks away from graduating with her peace officer certificate and becoming a police officer, the 29-year-old is turning a lifelong dream into reality through determination, higher education and hands-on experience.

“My dad would always tell me, ‘Choose a path where women are not always expected. If you want to make an impact, be a woman in uniform.’ That stuck with me,” she said. “If we are not part of the difference, then everything women went through to get us here does not mean as much. We must continue to be part of that change.”

Growing up in Laredo, Rios said law enforcement was always a familiar topic at home. Her father, who once aspired to become a federal highway police officer in Mexico, often spoke about the profession with admiration and respect.

Although she initially pursued a career in medicine, Rios said the idea of law enforcement never fully left her. Nearing completion of a bachelor’s degree in Biology, she made the life-changing decision to shift toward Criminal Justice, seeking a more hands-on career inspired by the encouragement her father had instilled in her.

“I wanted to be a doctor, but it just did not feel right,” she said. “I always wanted something more hands-on and criminal justice is where my heart is.”

Determined to gain firsthand experience and develop “thick skin,” Rios began her career in Beeville as a correctional officer for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

“People always told me that if you want to be in law enforcement, you have to grow thick skin, especially as a female,” Rios said. “That is why I went into corrections, so I could learn firsthand how to deal with the people I would eventually deal with outside.”

After a year, Rios continued building experience as a detention specialist with the City of Edinburg before realizing her goals extended beyond corrections. She enrolled in STC’s Police Academy this past January, balancing full-time work for two months before ultimately leaving her job to focus solely on school.

“Everybody talked really highly about STC,” Rios said. “They told me it was the best place to start, especially because I could self-sponsor and focus on the academy without already belonging to an agency.”

Since joining the academy, Rios said the experience has challenged her mentally and physically through academics, training and hands-on instruction, helping prepare her for the next step in her career.

“STC gives you a little bit of everything,” Rios said. “You are mentally challenged with books, physically challenged because of training and it really shows you how much effort you are willing to put into this career.”

Rios also credits the academy’s experienced instructors for helping cadets think critically and prepare for real-life situations in the field.

“They do not just hand you the answers,” she said. “They want to see how you think because in this field, things are not just going to be handed to you.”

Now nearing graduation, Rios has already begun applying to agencies across the region and hopes to continue building a career in law enforcement while eventually pursuing a master’s degree in Criminology.

As the first of five siblings and the first child to an immigrant mother, to pursue an associate degree, Colunga is determined to turn her inspiration into impact, combining academic excellence with heartfelt commitment to patient care. 

“I chose STC as my college of choice because of their vast options of medical programs, as well as their many student support aids,” she said.  

Admission into the course required taking the Health Education Systems Incorporated (HESI) exam and submitting scores within a strict timeframe. 

“I was lucky enough to get the last class section available out of four,” she said. “It was competitive since a lot of other students who want to enter this program also applied.” 

Her drive to pursue cardiac sonography is deeply personal.  

“My mother inspired me to pursue sonography,” she said. “She has heart failure and because of that I want to pursue cardiac sonography in order to find early signs of heart disease in others, that could then help them take the next steps into improving their health.” 

A defining moment reaffirmed her calling during a routine heart checkup of her own. 

“The sonographer that was examining my heart made an experience that's usually unnerving and uncomfortable, one that was free of these negative emotions and atmospheres,” she said. “This experience made me realize I chose the right career because that was the exact impact I want to have on the people I encounter.” 

 Earning competitive grades has been one of the most demanding aspects of preparing for the program. While a minimum grade above a C is required, Colunga understands that earing straight A’s places applicants at the top of the selection list.  

“So far I’ve achieved those requirements, but it can take a toll with the studying and time that is needed,” she said. 

The academic rigor has transformed her personally. Once accustomed to completing tasks at the last minute, she has developed stronger time management and organizational skills. Much of her week is dedicated to studying for quizzes and exams, often sacrificing social activities to stay focused on her long-term goals.  

“One of the biggest and most noticeable sacrifices I’ve made in order to stay committed has been using my time wisely,” she said. “I always try to put my studies first.” 

Throughout her journey, her family has remained her greatest support system. 

My siblings have helped me numerous times to study for exams through flash cards and fact checks,” she said. “My mother has been there for me when I feel discouraged about certain topics I have trouble understanding. My family has without fail cheered me on for every good grade I have earned.” 

Colunga believes sonography plays a vital role in health care, particularly in monitoring new life and detecting health concerns early. 

“It has allowed us to view health of every new generation,” she said. “Being able to see development through sonography helps not only the medical staff, but the family, and to limit surprises that may come.” 

Colunga plans to continue her education even after completing her associate degree. After learning that STC offers bachelor’s degree options, she hopes to eventually return to pursue a Bachelor of Applied Science in Medical and Health Service Management. 

“The impact I hope to have on those I serve would be one that changes the usual setting that sonography appointments are put under -uncomfortable and nerve-wracking,” she said. “I hope to bring my patients peace, reassurance and validation.” 

Her advice to future students considering the Sonography program or any academic path is rooted in perseverance. 

“Never let yourself get discouraged enough to quit,” she said. “Keep going forward, work and study hard, see everything as an opportunity to grow and everything you do will be worth it.” 

For Colunga, her journey towards cardiac sonography is fueled by family, resilience and a passion to make patients feel safe and supported one scan at a time.

Now, he is set to graduate next year with an associate degree in Kinesiology and is considering a future in sports medicine.

“Seeing my family struggle with their health made me realize I could do a lot of good in this field,” he said. “My brother and I are some of the only healthy people in our family, and that motivates me to want to help others.”

At first, Hernandez planned to become a fitness trainer, but after speaking with a friend studying in Kinesiology, he learned more about sports medicine and the wide range of opportunities it offers. That conversation led him to change the direction of his career and sparked his interest in athletic training.

“You’re basically the doctor on the field before they get to the actual doctors,” Hernandez said.

Outside of his studies, Hernandez is active on campus. He recently graduated from the Student Leadership Academy (SLA), is a part of Student Government Association (SGA), and participates in intramural sports. He credits his friend for encouraging him to step outside of his comfort zone and become more involved.

“I had a friend who graduated who would push me to try new things, but I was hesitant because I was always in my own bubble,” Hernandez said. “I realized I actually enjoyed it, so I started pushing myself to get out more.”

Although he kept to himself during his first semester, things began to change after he started going to the campus gym during his second semester. There, he met new people, became more involved and felt more connected to campus life.

“That is when I started getting out of my shell,” he said. “It has been a wild ride with lots of ups and downs, but it has completely changed my life for the better.”

Now, Hernadez encourages other students to trust themselves and stay committed to their goals.

“If you’re passionate about your career, keep going,” he said.

In addition to Welding, Gloria has recently also discovered an interest in wood working thanks to a project he had the opportunity work on with the Student Government Association, where he helped build a picnic table from the bottom up. This experience, he said, had a strong impact on him. He said he didn’t realize he was capable of doing that kind of work.

“I only planned on doing Welding, but I’ve been working with wood and in construction, especially through this project. I made a picnic table,” he said. “I didn’t really know I could make that.”

In addition to school, Gloria is also involved on campus in different extracurricular activities, including SGA within the department of Student Activities and Wellness, rising through the ranks now serving as parliamentarian and he volunteers at the college’s student food pantry.

Gloria said his interest in getting involved on campus came from seeing a previous SGA officer in action. He recalled how the officer would talk to students and genuinely cared about what needed to be improved around campus, which inspired him to participate.

“I saw the previous officer running for SGA, and I respected the way he would talk to us and cared about improving things,” he said. “It got me interested to do it.”

He also credits his STC Academic Advisor Robert Alanis, for encouraging him to take advantage of the opportunities around him. Gloria said that traveling with the college as a student leader and being active around campus helped him step outside his comfort zone.

His advice for incoming students is to join campus organizations and be more open to new opportunities.

“Go beyond your comfort zone and join new clubs,” Gloria said. “You never know what might come from it.”

After graduation, she said she plans to work at a hair salon that specializes in updos and styling, with the long-term goal of opening her own business.

“My sisters would ask me all the time to do their hair, and I really enjoyed it,” she said. “My mom always told me I should try it out, so I did, and I fell in love with it.”

She says her motivation comes from within, where she is driven by her own desire to succeed.

“I just really want to do well and be proud of myself,” Zylmans said.

During her time at STC, Zylmans has been able to grow professionally, while gaining valuable hands-on experience. She explained that she was once very nervous about working with clients, but through practice, she has become more confident in her skills and communication.

“At first I was very nervous about working on clients,” she said. “But now, I’ve gotten a lot better and feel more confident.”

Zylmans is also an international student from Canada. She chose STC after learning about the Cosmetology program online and has enjoyed her experience since. Although the transition was difficult at first, she quickly found support in her new environment.

“My teachers and classmates make me feel very welcomed, and I ended up making friends pretty fast,” she said.

Despite her positive experience, Zylmans said she has faced financial challenges along the way. As an international student on a visa, she is unable to work in the United States and is not eligible for financial aid, making it difficult to cover tuition and living expenses. Even with these challenges she remains determined to continue her education.

“I hope to come back to school in the fall to become a kindergarten teacher,” she said.

Zylmans continues to stay focused on her goals, by earning high grades and being recognized for her hard work. Her dedication shows her commitment to continuing her education and becoming successful.

For incoming students, she encourages them to keep going even when things feel difficult.

“Even if it’s hard, just keep trying,” Zylmans said.

Luna’s passion for nursing began at a young age. She grew up watching her father work as a nurse, realizing early on that she enjoyed helping people and that this was the right career path for her.

“I got inspired by my dad,” Luna said. “I got to see what he does, and I quickly became interested in it.”

In addition to her studies, Luna is part of STC’s work-study program, where she works in the Student Activities department at the Health Science Professions campus. Within this role, she helps organize student events that allow them to relax and make friends.

Aside from her work-study job, she is involved in Student Government Association (SGA), Student Leadership Academy and the Jag Unit, Social Media Club, where she enjoys connecting with others and building a safe community.

“I like putting myself out there and being able create new friendships through these organizations,” she said.

Her biggest motivation comes from her mother, who didn’t grow up with these educational opportunities.

“My mom didn’t have the chance to go to school,” she said. “So, I try to push myself, because I know how lucky I am for the opportunities that I do have.”

She credits STC for pushing her outside of her comfort zone and helping her grow while creating new experiences.

“STC has impacted me in a lot of positive ways,” Luna said. “It has offered me a lot of opportunities that I didn’t even know I could have.”

“I’ve been working with my mom since I was little, so I’ve always been around it,” he said. “That’s what made me want to go into this field.”

In addition to his studies, Flores is actively involved on campus. He currently serves as the Vice President of the Student Government Association (SGA), is part of the leadership program and works as a student ambassador. Through these roles, he has attended numerous meetings, events and galas that have helped him grow as a leader.

Flores is also an international student from Mexico who commutes daily from Reynosa to McAllen. Each day he wakes up before dawn to make the drive and arrive on campus by 10 a.m. He says his motivation comes from his passion and desire to succeed.

Flores credits STC for providing him with countless opportunities to grow both professionally and personally. He expresses gratitude for the doors that have opened up through his involvement on campus.

“I’m a student now with a lot of professional and social experiences,” he said. “So far, it has been amazing. I’ve been really involved and it has helped me grow a lot.”

Flores encourages future students to stay focused, remain determined and avoid procrastination to achieve their goals.

“It was the most fun I’ve ever had,” she said. “That’s when I knew I needed to switch my major.”

Now, she is on track to graduate next spring with an associate degree in Drama.

Wylie was homeschooled her entire life and had never experienced a traditional school setting, so starting college felt intimidating at first.

“I came into college and I was terrified,” Wylie said. “But STC has been a safe place for me to start my college journey.”

Throughout her time at STC, she has built a strong community within the Theatre department. The relationships she has formed with both faculty members and fellow students have played a big role in shaping her experience.

“The support system that I built here has made a huge difference,” she said. “We really function like a team, and that motivates me to keep pushing myself.”

After graduating from STC, Wylie plans to attend the University of Houston to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Theatre Education, where she hopes to one day work in an elementary school teaching students about theater.

This interest in education stems from her work at a local community theater, The Players Studio, where she works as an elementary theater coach.

“I love watching the kids discover their passion on stage,” she said. “It’s the best part of my week.”

For incoming students, Wylie encourages them to keep going, even when things feel overwhelming in the beginning.

“Its not as scary as it seems. It takes a minute to get used to it, but once you find your rhythm, it’s completely doable and fun,” she said.

At just 12 years old, Ryan’s interest in technology began when he first learned how to program computers. What started as a curiosity, quickly turned into something more, as he discovered a natural ability and a strong interest in the field.

“It came easy to me,” said Ryan. “Once I started learning, I realized this was something I really enjoyed and wanted to keep doing.”

As he learned more and grew his skills, Ryan developed an interest in cybersecurity, specifically in areas such as penetration testing and protecting systems from potential threats.

Ryan’s motivation comes from the opportunity to make a difference. He hopes to use his knowledge to protect individuals and organizations from cyberattacks, data breaches and other cyber risks that continue to happen in today’s digital world.

At STC, Ryan is appreciative of the supportive environment that has helped him continue to grow his skills. With the dedication of faculty members and the hands-on experience provided, it has allowed him to grow in ways he is most excited about.

“They’re very helpful and understanding,” Ryan said. “They give us different ways to learn, which really makes a difference.”

Ryan encourages students to stay focused and take advantage of the opportunities available to them. He believes success comes from consistency and putting in the effort to stay on track.

“Everything adds up,” he said. “Just stay focused and keep up with your assignments.”

Ryan hopes his journey shows students that with dedication and passion, turning an interest into a career is possible.

Her interest in teaching elementary-aged students stems from their enthusiasm and vibrant energy. Alanis says the excitement first graders have for learning, motivates her to continue pursuing a career in Education.

“That age is such a fun stage to teach,“ she said. “They’re curious, full of energy and are just starting to read and write. I want to be part of their journey of learning.”

In addition to her studies, Alanis has been involved in STC’s Student Government Association (SGA) since 2023. Starting as a member, she has worked her way up to hold the officer position of secretary.

Her involvement in SGA comes from her interest in law and advocating for others. Alanis said she hopes to be a voice for students and help express their concerns.

“Even before Education, I always wanted to become a lawyer,” she said. “I want to speak up for others and help represent students when something isn’t fair.”

Alanis also works part time as a work-study employee at STC in the Computer Science department. This role allows her to explore her interest in technology and gain professional experience.

“I chose to work in Computer Science because I’m interested in technology and how computers work,” she said. “I enjoy learning how to solve problems and create things using technology.”

Since the start of her journey at STC, Alanis says the support she has received from faculty and staff has made a significant impact on her college experience.

“There's a lot of support here,” she said. “From day one, teachers have been there for me and have helped me along the way.”

As Alanis prepares to graduate this summer, she encourages students to stay determined and seek help if needed.

“Don’t give up, even when things get hard,” she said. “Eventually you’ll find your way, and don’t be afraid to ask your teachers for help and support.”

Growing up in a family active in business, Borrego says her decision to pursue a degree in Operations Management came naturally. Watching her family work in the industry inspired her to explore similar opportunities.

“My family has always been into business, and I’m following the same path,” Borrego said. “I like the idea of being my own boss, while helping people expand their knowledge on what business can be.”

She commends her father, who owns a car lot, as one of her biggest motivations. She says he played an important role in guiding her and showing her different ways to achieve her goals.

“My dad took me under his wing and showed me different ways to be successful,” she said. “I’m doing this for my family, so I can make them proud and repay them back for everything they’ve done for me.”

Outside of academics, Borrego is involved in the Intramural Sports program at STC, where she often participates in trips and events that are organized through the program. She says sports have been an important part of her life, and she has been playing them since she was 4 years old.

“I have always been involved in sports,” said Borrego. “I run marathons and I am currently training for the IRONMAN triathlon.”

Borrego says being involved in campus activities has helped her meet new people, build friendships and discover new opportunities during her time here at STC.

“It has opened many doors for me,” she said. “I’ve met a lot of good people that I now can call my friends.”

For students starting their college journey, Borrego encourages them to follow their own path and be open to new experiences.

“A lot of people will tell you what you should do, but at the end of the day you have to choose the degree that’s right for you,” Borrego said. “Be open to different

opportunities, go to different events and keep your doors open to meeting new people.”

Born in the Rio Grande Valley, Espinosa lived most of her childhood in Mexico before moving back to the United States at the age of 14. She faced an immense amount of challenges in school, due to her only speaking Spanish, but it pushed her to work harder academically. Despite those challenges, she went on to graduate early from McAllen Memorial High School after completing her credits in only three years.

Although her college experience has not always felt traditional, Espinosa says STC has made her journey accessible and rewarding. She currently works in STC’s College Connections department, where she’s able to help students find the resources they need to succeed. Having this work-study role has allowed her to help students who face similar challenges as her.

“I like being able to help students realize they’re not alone,” Espinosa said. “Sometimes all it takes is someone guiding you in the right direction.”

Her biggest motivation comes from her parents, who are still living in Mexico. She talks about how their sacrifices and support encourage her to continue pursuing a higher education.

“My mom earned her master’s degree, so I always tell myself, ‘If she can do it, why can’t I,’” she stated. “She’s a big reason why I keep pushing myself.”

Espinosa encourages other students not to feel alone and to take advantage of the many opportunities available at STC. From networking at symposiums and conferences to seeking academic support, she believes growth happens when students are willing to step outside their comfort zones and ask for help.

Looking back, Espinosa knows every challenge has helped her grow stronger and more confident. She hopes her journey reminds other students that with support, dedication and self-belief, success is within reach.

“At one point, I didn’t know what I was going to do with my life,” Rosales said. “But with each exam and each semester, I’ve felt more accomplished. Nursing helped me change my life and how I see my future.”

After graduating from high school, the 24-year-old McAllen native was originally on track to earn a bachelor’s degree in biology, but the COVID-19 pandemic changed his plans and led him to STC’s Vocational Nursing program.

“I originally planned to pursue Biology because I enjoyed science, but when the pandemic happened, I took a break,” he said. “After returning to school, I realized nursing would allow me to enter the workforce more quickly.”

After earning his Vocational Nursing certificate in December 2024, Rosales continued into the Associate Degree in Nursing program through the LVN-RN transitional track at STC.

“What made me choose the transitional track was the safety net,” he said. “After one year, I became a licensed vocational nurse and was ready to start working.”

Now in the ADN program, Rosales said he feels more confident and capable.

“I feel more knowledgeable and capable,” he said. “I understand patient assessments better, including why we assess and how to prevent deterioration. That’s when I felt confident I had made the right decision.”

Since August 2025, Rosales has worked at STC’s Center for Learning Excellence as a tutor, guiding both vocational nursing and ADN students.

“I tutor all VN levels and almost all ADN levels since I graduate soon,” he said. “I try to guide students and help them avoid the mistakes I made. Since I was just in their shoes recently, I understand where confusion happens. Sometimes faculty understand the material so well that they don’t see where students get stuck. I can relate better.”

He also credits STC for helping him grow both academically and personally.

“I’m grateful for the tutoring center. It’s given me a job, but more than that, it’s helped me connect with so many students on the same journey,” he said. “I’ve met so many people, and even just walking down the hall, people say hi. It’s built a community.”

After graduation, he plans to apply to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at STC, with the goal of becoming a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA).

“After earning my BSN, I’ll need at least one year of ICU experience before applying to CRNA school. The more experience, the better,” he said. “CRNA programs are very competitive. If accepted, it’s a three-year doctoral program.”

Beyond career advancement, Rosales said he is motivated by the opportunity to give back to his family and pursue a career he has grown to love.

“I’m excited to start working and give back to my support system, especially my mom and my sister,” he said. “I’d love to buy my mom a new car. Her car is very worn down and I have a nice one thanks to her.”

The Business Administration major at South Texas College discovered his passion early by selling vintage clothing online, and by 18, he had saved enough money to open his first store in Pharr, specialized in providing curated vintage apparel and hosting community markets for local sellers.

Although he eventually closed the storefront to focus on school, the experience solidified his decision to pursue a degree in Business.

“I’ve always liked talking to people and finding opportunities,” Valdez said. “Business just made sense.”

Now, in his fourth semester at STC, Valdez takes classes while balancing a work study job on campus and intramural sports. He recently competed in regional and national flag football tournaments and traveled to Austin with the STC intramural basketball team. Staying involved on campus has changed his outlook on college.

“Honestly, I didn’t even want to go to college at first,” he admitted. “But once I got here and met people at Student Wellness, everything changed. It made me want to try.”

Valdez says his biggest motivation is self-discipline and setting himself up for the future. As the oldest sibling, he feels a strong sense of responsibility to make his family proud, but especially himself.

Though he initially planned to stop at an associate degree, Valdez now hopes to pursue a bachelor’s degree. His advice to other students unsure about college is simple: “Give it a shot with an open heart. If you try, at least you’ll know.”

For Valdez, success is about growth both in business and in life.

Gonzalez said her interest in radiology began after learning more about the role radiologic technologists play in health care. 

Encouraged by her mother, Gonzalez researched the program and quickly became drawn to the idea of being “the eyes of medicine.” 

“I thought it was really cool that we’re able to see inside the body and help doctors identify injuries or conditions,” Gonzalez said. “Being able to take an image and immediately understand what’s happening is fascinating.” 

Currently in her second semester, Gonzalez expects to graduate next summer. She said the fast-paced nature of the program requires strong organization skills and discipline. To stay on track, she relies heavily on careful planning and time management. 

“My best friend is Google Calendar,” Gonzalez said. “Before the semester starts, I go through every syllabus and write down all my exams and assignments, so I know exactly what’s coming.” 

Gonzalez attends classes at the Health Science Professions campus, where she has participated in campus activities aimed at welcoming new students and encouraging involvement. While her schedule is demanding, she appreciates the supportive environment she has found in her program. 

She credits faculty members and classmates for creating a close-knit learning experience, highlighting her instructors in particular for making complex material easier to understand and for genuinely wanting students to succeed. 

“Even when classes are difficult, I know I can go to my faculty or classmates for help,” Gonzalez said. “It really feels like everyone wants you to do well.” 

Gonzalez said staying focused on her long-term goals helps her push through challenging moments. 

“It was hard getting into the program, so I remind myself that I earned my spot here,” she said. “That motivates me to keep going.” 

After graduation, Gonzalez hopes to work in a clinical setting, where she can build stronger relationships with patients and provide more personalized care.

Johnson is majoring in Kinesiology exercise science and is currently enrolled as a full-time student.  Johnson spent more than two years attending college out of state, where she originally pursued a degree in Criminal Justice. While she found the field interesting, she began to reflect on her long-term goals and career interests. That ultimately led her to change her academic path.  

“I realized I wanted to become a chiropractor,” Johnson said. “It felt like a big change, but it made sense for what I see myself doing in the future.”  

She said the transfer process to STC was manageable, though gathering transcripts from her previous institution caused some delays. Despite registering later than expected, Johnson said she felt supported throughout the transition.

Now in her third year of college, Johnson is still finalizing her graduation timeline as her transferred credits are evaluated. She said it was her mother, who graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice, influenced her initial academic interests and to even pursue college, but since then she’s discovered her strong connection to exercise science and she knows she’s now on the right path. 

Outside the classroom, Johnson works as a gymnastics coach, a job she has held for several years. She coaches young children and describes the experience as both rewarding and influential in shaping her career goals. Even while in Minnesota, Johnson worked at a gym, making coaching a consistent part of her life.  

Johnson is also interested in becoming more involved on campus. Encouraged by close friends who are active with STC Student Activities and Wellness, she plans to get involved as she continues adjusting to STC.  

When facing challenges, Johnson reminds herself to stay focused and keep moving forward.  

“Have faith and keep going,” she said.

Chavez chose engineering because of his interest in technology, electronics and problem-solving. He is particularly drawn to research and development and hopes to one day start his own company focused on consumer electronics that bring people together rather than pull them apart. 

While balancing a full-time schedule, Chavez is also the founder of a new student organization focused on addressing student loneliness and social isolation. After learning that more than half of college students report feeling lonely, especially following the COVID-19 pandemic, Chavez saw an opportunity to make a difference. 

“What stood out to me was how many students feel disconnected,” Chavez said. “I wanted to create a space that helps students get out of their heads and start talking to each other again.” 

An idea that began with one event, evolved into a full student organization after encouragement from college staff. Chavez spent two weeks writing the club’s constitution and developing its mission, which centers on teaching students practical social skills, conversation starters and confidence-building tools. 

The goal, he said, is simple: Encourage students to make eye contact, say good morning and engage naturally with one another. 

“Those small interactions can lead to real connections,” Chavez said. “Once students have the tools, conversations start to flow.” 

Chavez plans to remain heavily involved on campus while continuing his engineering studies and someday pursue a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. He credits his motivation to focus on long-term goals, rather than focus on the stress. 

“When things get overwhelming, I remind myself to keep the goal in mind,” he said. “When you’re excited about where you’re headed, the work becomes easier.” 

After graduation, Chavez hopes to launch a company centered on research and development, with a focus on creating technology that encourages curiosity, collaboration and real-world interaction. 

For Chavez, South Texas College has provided more than an education. 

“It’s given me flexibility, opportunity and the chance to grow as a person,” he said. “STC helped me realize what I want to build and who I want to become.”

Treviño said his passion for history and athletics developed early. Growing up surrounded by sports and discovering a love for history in school shaped his decision to combine both interests into a future in education.  

“History was always my favorite subject,” Treviño said. “As I got older, I realized I wanted to teach and coach so I could make a positive impact on students, both in the classroom and on the field.”  

Treviño learned about STC’s Education pathway during a college banquet, where a faculty member encouraged him to continue his studies through the program. He said the opportunity aligned perfectly with his long-term goals.  

In addition to academics, Treviño has been actively involved in student athletics. He joined STC’s intramural flag football team last year after previously playing basketball and went on to help the team win a national championship.. He credits the experience with building lifelong friendships and strengthening his connection to the college. 

 “That team changed my life,” Treviño said. “It introduced me to people who became like family.”  

Balancing school and work, Treviño currently takes online classes while working for the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District as a  teacher aid.  He said the flexibility STC offers has been essential. 

“STC gave me the opportunity to grow, meet new people and figure out exactly what I want to do,” he said. “The flexibility and affordability made it possible for me to keep going.”  

Treviño expects to complete his associate degree as early as this summer and plans to move directly into a bachelor’s program with STC. His goal is to become a middle school history teacher and coach, following in the footsteps of his parents, who are both longtime educators.  

“I want to be someone who students remember,” Treviño said. “If I can help shape their future in a positive way, then I’ve done my job.”

She is currently working toward an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), completing prerequisite and required coursework before officially entering the nursing program at South Texas College. 

Moreno’s decision to pursue nursing is deeply personal. During her high school years, she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma (HL), a type of cancer that introduced her firsthand to the realities of patient care. 

Throughout her treatment, Moreno was surrounded by nurses who provided not only medical support, but also comfort, encouragement and strength during one of the most challenging periods of her life.  

“That experience changed everything for me,” Moreno said. “I was able to see how much of an impact nurses have on patients, especially when they are at their most vulnerable. After finishing my treatment, I knew this was what I wanted to do.”  

Moreno now plans to become a registered nurse in the oncology field, with long-term goals of gaining experience and eventually pursuing the nurse practitioner route. She views nursing as a way to give back to the same environment that once supported her and to serve patients facing difficult diagnoses with empathy and understanding.  

In addition to her academic goals, Moreno is highly involved on campus. She serves as secretary for the Student Government Association (SGA) and is an active member of multiple student organizations, including the Psychology, Biology and Criminal Justice Clubs.  

Balancing academics with extracurricular activities may be challenging for some, but Moreno sees her involvement as a source of motivation. 

“I like being on campus and being around people,” she said. “Being involved keeps me motivated. When I have a good day talking to people and feeding off that energy, it pushes me to go home and study, even if it’s late.”  

Moreno describes herself as a “people person,” a quality she believes aligns naturally with a career in nursing. She enjoys meeting new people, learning their stories and understanding that everyone she meets is working toward something meaningful of their own. 

One of her most memorable experiences this past semester came through her involvement with the SGA. Moreno attended officer training in South Padre Island alongside student leaders from across STC’s six campuses campuses. The trip allowed officers to build connections, share ideas and strengthen teamwork, creating memories, she says, she will carry with her throughout her college journey.  

“It was such a fun experience,” Moreno said. “Getting to meet officers from other campuses and growing closer as a team reminded me why being involved matters so much.”  

Moreno credits her family’s support as a driving force behind her success and determination. She believes her experiences, both personal and academic, have shaped her sense of purpose and reinforced her desire to serve others through health care.  

As she continues working toward her nursing degree, Moreno remains focused on growth, involvement and giving back, qualities that make her a standout example of perseverance and leadership.

Fuentes entered the Vocational Nursing program in August and quickly discovered the intensity of nursing education. While the semester moved fast and came with challenges, he said the experience reinforced his passion for the medical field. 

“I don’t see myself doing anything else,” Fuentes said. “This is exactly where I’m meant to be.” 

His interest in health care began at a young age, but became more personal toward the end of high school when his grandmother became seriously ill. Being present during her care strengthened his desire to help others through nursing. That motivation later evolved into a long-term goal of becoming a neurosurgeon. 

Fuentes said he chose the nursing pathway as a foundation for building strong patient relationships, something he believes is essential in medicine. 

“Nurses care for patients at their most vulnerable moments,” he said. “That connection matters, and it’s something I want to carry with me throughout my career.” 

In addition to coursework, Fuentes was elected class president, a role that requires him to act as a liaison between students, faculty and administration. He regularly assists classmates by answering questions, guiding them to campus resources and communicating concerns to faculty members when needed. 

“I like helping people,” Fuentes said. “If someone needs support, I want them to feel like they’re not alone.” 

Fuentes credits STC for providing accessible pathways to higher education, particularly during a challenging time for his family. 

After his mother suffered a stroke three years ago, financial considerations became a major factor in his college decision. 

“South Texas College made it possible for me to pursue my education without overwhelming financial stress,” he said. “The support here goes above and beyond.” 

He also noted opportunities within the nursing program that allow students to gain hands-on experience while earning income through a newly established apprenticeship program, an option that wasn’t not always available in the past. 

Fuentes plans to continue his education by earning an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), followed by a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at STC before attending medical school. 

While he hopes to complete a residency training in California, his long-term vision includes providing medical care in South America, where access to specialized health care is limited. 

“There are places where patients wait hours for emergency care,” Fuentes said. “I want to help reduce those health disparities.” 

A first-generation college student, Fuentes said he hopes his journey encourages others to pursue education in whatever form best fits their goals. 

As he prepares for the next level of nursing education, Fuentes remains focused on leadership, service and lifelong learning qualities that continue to define his experience at STC.

Reyna, who is currently completing his prerequisites for the Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), says helping others has always been at the center of his life.  

“Ever since I was little, I was fascinated by doctors and nurses,” Reyna said. “As I grew up, I realized helping people was exactly what I wanted to do.”  

That calling deepened during his senior year of high school when his grandmother became seriously ill. Reyna’s firsthand experience watching nurses care for her reaffirmed his desire to join the field.  

“Seeing the compassion and skill they had, made me want to become a nurse even more,” he said. 

Reyna first learned about STC nursing pathways through college fairs at Roma High School. Representatives from the college shared information about the program, and he immediately felt drawn to the college’s supportive environment and accessible resources.  

He plans to apply to the program this coming May or June, once the new application cycle opens. He is currently preparing for the Health Education Systems Inc. (HESI) exam, an admissions requirement for prospective nursing students.  

“My plan next semester is to pass the HESI with the scores I need,” Reyna said. “That way, I can take the Introduction to Nursing course and move forward.”  

Reyna credits his discipline and time management for helping him stay on track. He dedicates long hours to studying and says that staying committed especially when coursework becomes demanding is essential for future nursing students.  

His motivation comes from the people closest to him, including his peers and parents, who continuously support his academic goals.  

“My mom always tells me, ‘If you don’t pass the first time, it’s not the end of the world.’ That keeps me going,” he said. “But I do hope to pass things the first time.”  

At home, Reyna will be a first-generation college graduate. He is proud to set an example for his immediate family and hopes to inspire younger relatives to pursue higher education.  

On campus, Reyna is an active member of the Student Leadership Academy (SLA) at the Starr County Campus.   

As an advanced member, he helps facilitate meetings, assist new students and support campus events. He credits SLA for building his confidence and giving him opportunities to grow as a leader.  

“I like being involved,” he said. “Helping plan events and supporting other students has made my experience even better.”  

Looking ahead, Reyna hopes to become either an intensive care unit (ICU) nurse or a neonatal nurse.  

“My dream job would be in the ICU or working with babies,” he said. “I want to make a difference where it matters most.”  

When asked what advice he would give himself as he moves into a new semester, Reyna shared a simple but powerful reminder.  

“Keep trying your best. You’re going to get through it.”

Correas said her interest in Criminal Justice started long before college. Even in elementary school, she felt drawn to stories about fairness, justice and advocacy. That early spark eventually became personal as she grew older and saw her own family face challenges navigating the legal system.  

“I’ve seen my dad not get good representation or get, what I believe is scammed, by attorneys,” she said. “It made me want to help people who don’t have the resources or support to defend themselves.”  

Correas learned about STC’s Criminal Justice program after a friend told her about the academic options available. She immediately switched majors and has not looked back since. 

Today, she is on track to graduate in about a year and plans to continue as a full-time student next semester while transitioning into online coursework.  

Reflecting on this past fall semester, Correas said she has created unforgettable memories from campus events to her involvement with the Student Government Association (SGA).  

She also recently celebrated a special milestone on campus after becoming engaged during an STC student  event at the Pecan Campus.  

She said the moment made her college experience even more meaningful, as it happened in a place where she has built lasting memories and connections.  

“It was really special,” she said. “STC has given me a lot of great memories to be thankful for.”  

Motivation plays a significant role in Correas’ academic success. She credits her parents and close friends with inspiring her to continue pushing toward her goals.  

“My parents and my friends motivate me every day to keep striving for success,” she said. “My friends have really become like family.”  

Her advice for herself moving into the next semester is simple but meaningful: “Keep trying your best and you’re going to get through it.”  

Correas said STC has impacted her both academically and personally. She described the environment as supportive, encouraging and full of opportunities to grow.  

“STC has given me so much knowledge and motivation,” she said. “I know this college will continue helping me throughout my life.”  

Correas comes from a family that values education. Two of her sisters have already attended STC, and two more are currently enrolled. She said being surrounded by siblings who share similar goals helps her stay grounded.  

Her involvement in the SGA has also shaped her college experience. She joined after a friend encouraged her and now participates alongside her fiancé.  

“We’ve been having a blast with it,” she said. “It really creates a community on campus.”  

With a strong support system and a clear sense of purpose, Correas hopes her journey encourages others to keep moving forward  no matter the obstacles.  

“For anyone thinking about Criminal Justice, or just college in general, keep pushing,” she said. “Dedication makes everything possible.” 

Although he began his college journey in Welding, Arevalo eventually followed a growing interest that started long before he ever stepped foot inside an STC classroom or lab. 

Hours of watching engine builds, mechanical restorations and diagnostic videos sparked a curiosity that quickly turned into something more serious. 

“I would watch people build engines and explain how everything works,” Arevalo said. “The more I watched, the more interested I became. That’s really where it all started.” 

Before entering the Automotive program, Arevalo completed a certificate or associate degree in Welding Technology from STC. Once he finished, he felt ready to try something new and build additional skills that could eventually support his long-term goal of opening his own at-home shop. 

“I completed the welding program, but I wanted to do something else,” Arevalo said. “Learning both trades is going to help me in the future.” 

Arevalo expects to graduate again next semester and plans to remain a full-time student until completing his degree. He prefers taking afternoon classes and said the program works well with his schedule and learning style. 

Throughout his journey at STC, Arevalo has found motivation from someone near and dear to his heart -his father. 

“My dad is the person who has encouraged me to keep going to college,” Arevalo said. “He always pushes me to continue.” 

Arevalo comes from a supportive family with a strong connection to education. His oldest sister graduated from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, and another sister also previously attended STC. Arevalo said watching them succeed helped reinforce his own commitment to completing his degree. 

He added that STC has played an important role in helping him explore different fields and transition smoothly from one program to another. 

“Advisor and faculty members have helped me out with everything,” he said. “Switching majors and learning a new trade was easier with their support.” 

With graduation only a few months away, Arevalo already has a clear vision of his future. His dream is to own his own garage at home, a space where he can work independently, build engines and take on projects that combine his welding background with his automotive training.

Gloria is currently pursuing an Associate of Arts in Criminal Justice at South Texas College, a field she said she chose because she wants to make a difference in her community. 

“I decided on Criminal Justice because there is so much happening in the world with no justice,” she said. “I’ve always wanted to help and be part of solving those problems.” 

With the goal of becoming an investigator, her interest in investigations began in high school, where she discovered she enjoyed analyzing cases and learning how crimes are solved. 

This fall marked her first semester in college, and Gloria said STC has already played a key role in helping her adjust. She is involved in multiple clubs, including the Criminal Justice Club and the Student Government Association (SGA) and works on campus as a work-study employee. 

“At first, I thought it would be hard to make friends,” she said. “But joining clubs helped me a lot. I met people quickly and it made college feel less scary.” 

Gloria also praised the support she receives from instructors and tutoring services. 

“The tutors help me so much, especially with English essays. It’s good that STC provides all these helpful recourses,” she said. 

Being a full-time student and work-study employee keeps her busy, but she enjoys the balance. 

“It’s great that STC has these opportunities for students. I study here and work here, so everything is in one place,” she said. 

Gloria comes from a family of welders and is the only girl among four brothers. While her siblings pursued welding, she chose a different path, though she says she may still explore welding as a side skill through STC in the future. 

She credits staff members like Abdaly Avilez, a student activities specialist at the STC Pecan Campus, for guiding her during her first semester. 

“They’ve helped me a lot,” she said. “Meeting people like her really made an impact.” 

As she prepares for the spring semester, Gloria plans to continue as a full-time student and stay involved in student organizations. Her long-term goal is to build a career in the Criminal Justice field, where she can contribute to creating safer, stronger communities.

Garcia, a second-generation college student from Rio Grande City, said his passion for nursing began in high school when a dual credit course brought him to STC’s Nursing and Allied Health Campus, now Health Science Professions. 

“They took us on a tour, and I saw everyone in scrubs,” he said. “I remember thinking, ‘Yeah, this is what I want to do.’” 

Despite not having any family members in health care,  his parents work in education, and his extended family includes lawyers and professors, García always felt drawn to emergency situations and the challenge of saving lives. 

“I was never around hospitals or medicine growing up,” he said. “But I always wanted to know how to help during an accident or crisis. I wanted to be useful.” 

Garcia is currently completing Level 3 of the nursing program and is expected to graduate in May 2026. His final year will include a capstone rotation where students shadow a nurse for three 12-hour shifts, fully immersing themselves in real hospital environments.  

“I’m really excited for that part,” he said. “It’s one thing to learn in class, but it’s another to be hands-on.” 

Garcia’s motivation comes from within. 

“I want to be remembered,” he said. “I want to push myself to be the best version of myself. If there’s something I want, I’m going to work for it.” 

Outside the classroom, Garcia has taken strong leadership roles. He serves as president of the Student Government Association (SGA) at the Health Science Professions Campus and works as a tutor in the STC Center for Learning Excellence (CLE), helping fellow students break down complicated nursing concepts. 

“I love seeing that moment when someone finally understands,” he said. “It’s like the light switches on.” 

He believes campus involvement is essential, especially for nursing majors.  

“Students always tell me they don’t have time,” he said. “But there’s always time. You just need better organization. These events help you relax and get your mind off the pressure.”  

Recently, Garcia was hired as a nurse extern at Valley Regional Medical Center, a paid, learning role where nursing students work alongside hospital staff to gain real-world clinical experience before graduating.  

“It’s a huge opportunity,” he said. “I’m really grateful.” 

After graduation, Garcia hopes to work in the emergency department at McAllen Medical Center. 

“I like the chaos,” he said. “It’s an organized mess where everyone knows what to do. That’s where I belong.”

After initially majoring in Nursing, Ramirez realized her true calling was in the performing arts.  

“I had been doing theater since sixth grade,” Ramirez said. “I went into nursing because it felt like the safe choice, but I realized I was doing it for the money not because I loved it.”  

Her passion for drama reignited after reconnecting with her former high school theater teacher, who invited her to help with a production as an assistant director. That experience reminded her of how much she loved the stage.   

“I loved working with the students and helping behind the scenes,” she said. “I told myself, if I’m doing this for free and enjoying it this much, I must really love it.”  

Since switching majors, Ramirez has immersed herself in STC’s Drama program, learning every part of theater production from lighting and props to set design and stage coordination. She currently works as a theater department work-study employee, where she’s developed close relationships with staff and mentors.  

“Here, every day here is a new adventure,” she said. “Everything I’ve learned, I owe to Robert De Hoyos, our Theater Support Services coordinator. He’s taught me so much about the technical side of theater.”  

Outside of class, Ramirez serves as the prop master for STC’s upcoming production The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) a comedy that challenges her creativity as she helps design unique props, including stage-ready “fake pies.”  

A mother to a 7-year-old son, Ramirez said her biggest motivation is showing him the importance of pursuing education and passion.  

“I want him to see that even as a mom, I kept going,” she said. “Whatever he chooses to do, I want him to keep pushing forward and never stop.”   

Long term, she dreams of directing her own productions and opening a theater company.  

“STC was the perfect place for me to start fresh,” she said. “It gave me the flexibility and support I needed to reinvent myself and follow what I truly love.” 
 
 

Inspired by his mother’s remarkable survival after a heart and lung transplant, he wants to help other families like his own, and one day work at the same hospital where his mother healed.

“My mom had the surgery when I was 5, and ever since they saved her life, I’ve always wanted to go into the medical field. It’s always been something that interested me,” Mendez said.

Upon graduating this semester, the 20-year-old plans to apply to STC’s Radiologic Technology program to further his education and continue building his medical career.

“I’ve always been fascinated by radiology, especially anatomy,” he said. “More than anything, I’ve always been fascinated by the body as a whole.”

Born in Mission, Mendez moved with his family to Houston when he was 5 years old due to his mother’s health issues. They returned to the Valley during the pandemic to be closer to relatives. Back home, Mendez took the advice of friends who encouraged him to pursue a career in health care at STC.

“They all recommended STC to me, especially for health care and it has been an amazing experience,” he said. “The MAT program helps you gain tons of skills and certifications and it’s a great stepping stone into another profession.”

Through the MAT program, Mendez has earned certifications in EKG, medical office specialist and phlebotomy and will soon complete his associate degree. He’s also hopeful to begin his career right after graduation.

“I’m in talks with the doctor who owns the clinic where I’m doing my practicum,” he said. “He’s trying to see how he can hire me so I can keep working while I continue school.”

Grateful for the instructors who have guided him, Mendez said their support has been one of the highlights of his journey.

“Honestly, doing the practicums and meeting new people has been great, but probably the faculty are my favorite part of this program, they’re some of the best teachers I’ve ever had,” he said. “They’re very hands-on and explain everything so well.”

For Mendez, becoming a medical assistant has been deeply personal and rewarding.

“It’s been fun. I’ve enjoyed it,” he said. “When I see older patients with some of the same health issues my family has faced, I can relate to them. It feels like I’m helping my own family.”

Looking ahead, Mendez hopes to eventually work for Houston Methodist Hospital, the same facility where his mother received her life-saving care.

“As much as I love the Rio Grande Valley, my main goal is to work for Methodist because that’s where they save my mom’s life,” he said. “It would mean a lot to give back to the place that gave her a second chance.”
 

Rangel, 18, is in her first semester at STC and he chose Psychology because he wants to prevent others from experiencing what he went through growing up. 

“I’ve had a lot of challenges in my life,” Rangel said. “I feel like my personal issues can help resolve other people’s issues. I want people to feel free to talk and to know they’re not alone.” 

His first semester at the Starr County Campus has been “amazing,” he said. He has already made new friends, enjoys the staff’s support and is active in the campus Psychology Club, which he said has helped him feel connected. 

“Some people don’t agree with me, but my English 1301 class was my favorite,” Rangel said. “The way the instructor teaches this class made it enjoyable.” 

Although he may seem reserved at first, Rangel describes himself as approachable and easy to befriend. 

“People think I’m mean, but I’m super friendly once you get to know me,” he said. 

Rangel plans to complete his associate degree at by 2027 and then transfer to either the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley or Texas A&M International University in Laredo to earn his bachelor’s, master’s and eventually a doctoral degree. 

He hopes to work in a behavioral center as a social worker or manager and continue helping others. 

He credits the STC college environment for giving him confidence. 

“At first, I was nervous. I didn’t know if I’d make friends,” he said. “But I started talking to professors, participating in events, and it’s been great.” 

His advice for other students starting college is simple: “You’ve got this. Push yourself forward. Even in tough times, keep going toward the light and prosper.” 

When asked to describe his college journey so far in three words, Rangel chose “Fun, adventurous and learning.”

“My dream is to be a homicide detective, and I really wanted to have the brains of a forensic scientist and the skills of a police officer,” Tamez said. “I think that would really help me be as successful as I can be in that field.” 

Her inspiration began at a young age after watching crime shows and imagining herself solving cases. Over time, she said her desire to help others and her interest in the justice system pushed her to pursue the academic side of forensics. 

Tamez learned about STC through family connections. Her mother has worked at the college since it was South Texas Community College. She now serves as a transcript/graduation analyst. 

“I knew STC would be a good choice to kickstart my education,” Tamez said. 

She plans to earn her associate degree at STC before transferring to complete her bachelor’s degree. Her goal is to graduate by December 2026. 

Outside of class, Tamez works at the STC Bookstore, which she says has helped her build connections with fellow students. She also finds joy in working with her mom, making decorative mums for homecoming season. 

“We started back when I was in middle school,” she said. “It’s something fun we get to do together, and this year we’ve already made eight.”

At home, she shares a close bond with her mom, crediting her as a major source of motivation. 

“Senior year was a tough year for me, but it really helped solidify us into building a better relationship,” she said. 

In the classroom, Tamez says her professors have played a big role in shaping her perspective. 

“My ethics class makes you really think about who you want to be and how people can be more understanding,” she said. 

As she looks forward to a career in law enforcement, she hopes to start locally, in the Rio Grande Valley, before possibly moving to a larger city.

“She did it while raising me and my siblings,” Mendoza said. “It was really rough, but watching her overcome everything motivated me. I’ve always had a passion for the medical field, and now I’m excited to pursue it myself.” 

She is currently a full-time student completing her prerequisite courses and plans to apply to the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program in the Spring. Her long-term goal is to specialize in women’s health and possibly become an OB-GYN. 

“I want to open my own clinic someday,” she said. “There’s so many routes I can take in health care, but I know I want to care for women and families.” 

A first-generation college student, Mendoza considered multiple universities across Texas, but chose to stay local. 

“I applied to schools in San Antonio and Houston, but I’m a homebody,” she said. “STC made the transition into college smooth. I got to talk to advisors, go to orientation, and it just felt like the right choice. I don’t regret it at all.” 

In addition to her studies, Mendoza is active on campus and recently joined STC’s intramural flag football team. 

“I love sports. I did track and powerlifting in high school, so joining a sport in college felt right,” she said. “It helps me balance everything out and meet new people.” 

Mendoza appreciates the support she’s found at STC, especially from faculty . 

“Faculty are so kind and understanding,” she said. “I feel like STC truly cares about its students.” 

Her biggest motivator remains her goals. 

“I don’t want to wait for things to happen to me,” Mendoza said. “I’m a go-getter. If I want something, I’ll work for it. That’s what keeps me going.” 

She encourages others considering college to explore STC’s programs and take the leap.

“You don’t have to leave home to chase your dreams,” she said. “You can start right here.”

Perez discovered her passion for sports early on through an elementary school coach who she said believed in her and motivated her. 

“His name was Mr. Rodriguez. I was in second grade, and he gave me a chance to run track,” Perez said. “That small opportunity stuck with me. It made me feel seen, and that’s what I want to give to others someday.” 

Now in her first year at STC, Perez said she is determined to create a safe and encouraging environment for future student athletes.  

“I want to be a coach who is fair and pushes kids to grow, not tear them down,” she said. “My dream is to eventually start a program or club where all kids feel like they belong.” 

Though she initially considered other careers such as Engineering or Welding, it was a conversation with her aunt during her senior year that helped her realign her goals with her love of movement and motivation. 

“She reminded me how much I love being active and outdoors,” Perez said. “When she explained what kinesiology was, I knew right away it was the path for me.” 

While adjusting to college life has come with its challenges, Perez said her experience at STC has helped her build confidence and discipline. 

“There’s definitely a lot of work, but I like it,” she said. “I feel like I’m learning how to manage my time and responsibilities.” 

Perez hopes to transfer after graduation and continue her studies, while gaining experience through internships or youth programs like the Boys and Girls Club. As a first-generation college student, she said her journey is also for her family. 

“I want to make them proud,” she said. “They’ve supported me every step of the way.” 

Inspired by her cousin’s experience, Chapa saw nursing as a meaningful career path and STC as the right place to begin. 

Now in Level 1 of the program, she is balancing seven classes and weekly clinical hours. While the transition hasn’t been easy, she’s found comfort in her support system. 

She studies alongside two close friends, including Daniela Elizondo, whom she applied with. Together, they help each other stay motivated and on track. 

“We keep each other going,” Chapa said. “When it feels like too much, having someone next to you makes a big difference.” 

Her biggest motivators, however, are at home. Chapa credits her parents and younger brother, currently a University of Texas Rio Grande Valley student and athlete, for pushing her to stay focused. 

She is especially inspired by her mother, who recently graduated from STC with her bachelor's degree in (program) and now teaches kindergarten at a local elementary school. 

“My mom actually had to leave college when she got pregnant with me,” Chapa said. “She went back years later and finished what she started. That really motivates me.” 

Chapa’s long-term goal is to become a nurse practitioner, but right now, she’s focused on passing the semester and learning to manage the demands of the program. She’s learning how to speak with patients, build confidence in clinical settings and find balance outside of the classroom. 

Though only a few weeks into the semester, she says STC has already had a positive impact. 

“The professors are super supportive. They take the time to make you feel comfortable asking questions. That makes a big difference when everything is new,” she said. 

Chapa is active with her church and hopes to participate in future STC activities once her schedule lightens up. 

Her advice for future nursing students: “Take care of yourself outside of school, so you can succeed in class. Stay calm, stay focused and keep pushing.”

“I’ve always loved to work with my hands,” Garza said. “My mom encouraged me to look into the diesel program because she works in HVAC. She knew it would be a good fit for me.” 

Garza says STC was the clear choice. It was the only college nearby offering the Diesel Technology program, and he credits his family, especially his mom and his late father, as the reason he stays motivated. 

“My mom has so much patience, especially with six kids,” Garza said. “And if my dad were still here, I know he’d tell me to keep going.” 

He also draws inspiration from his grandfather, who never had the chance to see him graduate high school. Garza says this pushes him to work hard and be a role model for his younger siblings. 

“I’m trying to be more like my mom and grandpa,” he said. “My goal is to graduate by May next year and find something stable, something simple and close to home.” 

Inside the classroom, Garza says one of his biggest supporters has been Diesel faculty member Jonathan Davila, who teaches several of his diesel courses. 

“Mr. Davila has really helped me out,” he said. “He’s someone who makes learning easier and more motivating.” 

When asked about his favorite moments at STC, Garza says it’s the little things like sharing meals and talking with classmates that make the biggest impact. 

“It’s not just about school,” he said. “It’s the people around you that keep you going.” 

Garza recently signed up to be part of the Jag Unit, a new student social media club at STC, focused on building campus pride and community. Although he’s not involved in other extracurriculars yet, he’s looking forward to being more active this semester.

’Vera was first introduced to welding through his high school program and quickly found a passion for it. 

“It caught my attention,” he said. “Maybe I could see myself doing this in the future. As I went into college, it just kind of grew on me.” 

While Vera initially enrolled at STC to explore his interests, he found more than just a trade. He found a supportive community and a sense of purpose. 

Vera currently attends the college’s Technology Campus, where he appreciates the quieter, focused environment. He also takes part in the Student Government Association (SGA). 

“It’s probably one of the best things I could have joined,” Vera said. “It helped me break out of my shell. Going into college, I was shy.” 

Through SGA, Vera met peers and mentors who helped him grow more comfortable in leadership and social settings. This decision ended up offering him much more than he expected. 

“The friends you make along the way will definitely set you on the correct path,” he said. 

He typically takes four or more classes each semester and spends much of his time at the Technology Campus. Although he once considered transferring to a university, he said STC has grown on him and he’s proud of the hands-on learning and leadership opportunities it has given him. 

His long-term goal is to one day own a welding shop and create his own projects. Until then, he plans to gain as much knowledge and experience as he can. 

“I just want to take what I learn and use it to the best I can,” he said. 

Vera encourages other students to get involved and not be afraid to try something new.

“You never know where it’ll take you,” he said. “Just showing up and saying yes can change everything.”

Currently enrolled in South Texas College’s four-week Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) program, Ramirez is confident that he’s on the right path. 

Inspired by his uncle, who drove trucks for more than 20 years, and a friend who drove in the military, Ramirez said both had positive experiences and fulfilling careers. 

“I always thought it would be a great career to get into,” Ramirez said. “Ever since I joined the program, I’ve been having a lot of fun. It’s definitely been challenging, but I’m learning a lot, and I feel more confident every day.” 

Within just two weeks, Ramirez earned his permit, drove on public roads and learned how to parallel park an 18-wheeler truck. His goal is to complete the program, obtain his CDL and begin driving tankers with a hazmat endorsement throughout Texas. 

“I feel like I’m getting the best education here,” he said. “The instructors are incredibly helpful, they answer all my questions and I’ve already learned so much in a short time.” 

Before enrolling at STC, Ramirez worked in landscaping, plumbing and power washing. But with long-term goals in mind, he knew a career shift was necessary. 

“My uncle had a really good home life, and the trucking industry really took care of him,” he said. “That stuck with me, and I’m hoping to do the same.” 

Ramirez appreciates the pace and structure of the program, especially for someone who’s ready to enter the workforce quickly. 

“Getting my CDL in four weeks means I can start working and building my future a lot sooner,” he said. “It’s very important to me.” 

He also encourages others to take the leap if they’re interested in the field. 

“If you’re looking to get into bus or truck driving, I highly recommend STC,” Ramirez said. “They make sure you understand every part of the process. They don’t rush you. They really take care of you.” 

With his sights set on the road ahead, Ramirez hopes to one day expand his qualifications and possibly help future students in the same way his instructors have helped him.

Lopez , 19, is pursuing an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Welding at South Texas College. He expects to receive his welding certificate by December and his associate degree by next summer.

“It really started in high school,” said Lopez, a graduate of Palmview High School. “I took a welding class junior year, and I was pretty good at it. I stuck with it because I liked it, and the pay is good too. I want to be able to provide for my future family.”

Lopez doesn’t have a family background in welding, but he was encouraged by his older brother, who also graduated from STC.

Lopez said his decision to stay local was easy. He was already familiar with STC’s robust programs and knew he didn’t want to leave the Valley until he earned a degree.

Lopez said welding students work hands-on to complete individual projects, but there’s still room to connect and talk with others. Outside of the Welding program, Lopez found a whole new side of himself through the Student Government Association (SGA) at the Technology Campus.

“I was really antisocial in high school,” Lopez said. “But joining SGA helped me break out of my shell and become more social. It’s helped me grow as a person.”

Through SGA, Lopez traveled to Austin and connected with students from other campuses.

“One of my favorite memories was our Austin trip. We were representing STC, and I met a lot of people I’m still close with,” he said. “SGA advisors, especially Robert Alaniz and J.D. Miller, have been mentors to me. They’ve helped guide me and always make time to talk.”

Lopez encourages other students to get involved with campus life.

“Definitely join clubs if you’re thinking about it,” he said. “It helps you get out of your bubble, meet people and just be more involved. Plus, the trips and events are fun.”

Although he’s close to completing his welding program, Lopez doesn’t plan to stop there. He hopes to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Leadership and eventually get a job at STC, possibly in student activities.

“I love teaching kids,” said Dawkins. “I remember taking it upon myself when I was younger to teach the neighborhood children whatever I could, every Sunday evening. My passion has really been drawn from this experience.”

Her journey back to school wasn’t easy. After being out of school for two decades, Dawkins felt conflicted about starting college later in life. Growing up in a single-parent household with four siblings, Dawkins faced financial challenges, so after graduating high school she immediately started working to support her family. This put college at the bottom of the priority list.

Recently, it was her sister, who provided the encouragement she needed to return.

“Honestly, at the time, college wasn’t even on my mind,” she said. “But when my sister Marika, who also works in education, encouraged me, I started to consider going back to school.”

Even then, it wasn’t an easy decision. Dawkins said it took her more than 15 years of working and saving before she could afford to attend college. She finally enrolled at STC in 2024.

“I chose STC because of its affordable tuition, diverse culture and welcoming atmosphere,” she said. “It just felt like the right place to start.”

Leaving her home and family in Jamaica was one of the hardest parts of her journey. But Dawkins said her faith gave her strength.

“Starting college at 40 came with fears,” she said. “Would I be able to keep up? Would I be accepted? But I’ve weathered the storm.”

Today, Dawkins is thriving. She’s an honor student and has been invited to join several organizations, including Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, the Good Neighbor Scholarship Program and the Society for College Leadership & Achievement (SCLA) Honor Society.

Balancing school and work haven’t been easy, but Dawkins is motivated by a desire to make a difference in her community.

“I want to impact lives—not just in school, but at home and at work,” she said. “It’s not where you start or how you start, but how you finish.”

Escobar enrolled in the STC Dual Credit Programs Fire Academy after a classroom presentation at Mission High School from South Texas College faculty member Victor  Fonseca. The visit lit a spark in him that quickly turned into action. 

“I wanted to challenge myself,” Escobar said. “When I saw what the academy was about, I thought, ‘This is going to push me, and I want that.’” 

The STC Fire Academy, which recently began offering a high school-level program, demands more than just physical endurance. Students like Escobar are held to high standards academically and physically. But despite the pressure, Escobar says it’s the sense of teamwork that keeps him grounded. 

“Our group is small, just eight of us right now, but we’re tight,” he said. “We come from different places and didn’t know each other before, but now we’re pushing each other to be our best.” 

That support was especially important during their final exam. Escobar remembers how the group came together during late-night study sessions, encouraging each other through the process. 

“We all had each other’s backs,” he said. “Our lowest grade on the final was a 95. That shows how seriously we take this and how strong we are as a team.” 

Escobar credits the faculty and staff at STC’s Fire Academy for much of his motivation. He said one day he was struggling during a drill and a tutor stayed behind to guide him through it. That support meant the world to him. 

“I had gotten stuck, and he stayed with me until I got through it,” Escobar said. “That kind of support means everything.” 

While this is only the beginning of his journey, Escobar has big plans. His dream is to become a firefighter and eventually move up the ranks to become a fire marshal or inspector. 

“I want to use my youth while I have it,” he said. “But I also want to grow in this field and serve in other ways.” 

He hopes to be a role model for his younger sister and peers who might not see firefighting as an option. 

“I tell people the journey may be tough, but the reward is worth it,” Escobar said. 

For him, STC is more than just a place to earn a certificate, it’s a launchpad. 

“Everyone here wants you to be the best version of yourself,” he said. “And I’m just getting started.”

“I’ve always wanted to be a nurse,” she said. “My grandmother was diabetic, and I helped my mom take care of her. Seeing the way the nurses cared for her stuck with me. My mom would always tell me about how the nurses cared for me when I was a baby too.”

That early exposure helped her realize she had what it takes to pursue the profession.

“I have a really caring heart,” she said. “I tend to put others before myself, so, nursing just felt like the right fit.”

Currently completing her final two prerequisite courses, Garcia plans to take the Health Education Systems Incorporated (HESI) exam and apply to STC’s Nursing program next spring. She was drawn to the college’s strong reputation and affordability.

“STC checked all the boxes,” she said.

Garcia is also involved in the Student Government Association (SGA), where she found a sense of community that made a difference in her college experience.

“I’ve met so many amazing people through SGA,” she said. “I’ve grown socially and gotten to be a part of volunteer events that really matter.”

One of the things she appreciates most about STC is the support she receives.

“The resources and opportunities STC gives us, like the work-study program, have really helped,” she said. “They make it easier to stay focused and keep going.”

Garcia’s dream is to work with children, and she already has some experience.

“I worked at the Boys and Girls Club before, so I know I love working with kids,” she said. “That’s why pediatrics is my goal.”

As she looks ahead to her final classes, she reminds herself to stay grounded.

“It’s cliché, but I always say, ‘It’s not a bad life, it’s just a bad day,’” she said. “That quote has gotten me through a lot.”

For Garcia, it all leads to the moment she walks the stage with a cap and gown.

“That’s what keeps me pushing,” she said. “I want to get my degree and start my career. Even when it’s tough, I know it’s going to be worth it.”
