Transforming dreams into healing

Student of the Week: Isaiah Jared Rodriguez

Entering college, I was set on a business career, but soon discovered that the health care field was my true calling. I enjoy connecting with people and I consider myself empathetic. Transitioning into hands-on work in health care was a no-brainer for me.

STC Student of the Week Isaiah Jared Rodriguez

Isaiah Jared Rodriguez, a 23-year-old Patient Care Technician program student, brings his journey to health care to life at South Texas College.

"Entering college, I was set on a business career, but soon discovered that the health care field was my true calling,” said Rodriguez. “I enjoy connecting with people and I consider myself empathetic. Transitioning into hands-on work in health care was a no-brainer for me."

It was during an initial meeting with an advisor, that he realized all the opportunities that STC had to offer, including health care, inspiring a career change The Patient Care Technician program emphasizes the fundamentals of nursing care, but also includes practical skills such as phlebotomy, EKG and monitor technician expertise.

Offering daytime and hybrid classes, the program can accommodate aspiring health care professionals year-round, commencing in fall, spring or summer, across various campuses including STC’s Nursing and Allied Health, Starr County and Mid-Valley campuses.

The curriculum's comprehensive approach also prepares students for a transition into the STC Vocational Nursing program after successfully passing the Texas Department of Aging Nurse Aide Competency Examination.

"This program will help us for our future transition into the nursing program. The curriculum ensures that everything we're learning aligns with the skills and responsibilities we'll come across in the next phase of our education,” he said. “The program moves quickly with an extensive amount of reading. I highly recommend completing all the reading assignments promptly and don't hesitate to ask questions—it's normal to feel uneasy about certain things, but this is all part of preparing us for the real world."

Rodriguez, an older brother hoping to motivate his brother and sister, and a younger generation said he draws strength and determination from them to persist in the program. The responsibility of setting an example for his siblings fuels his commitment.

"Back at home they see me as a role model; it's great to see their admiration when I wear the uniform. I take pride in sharing with them my journey and how I can help save lives,” said Rodriguez.
