Twin STC graduates honor father’s memory with support from McAllen Fire Department

South Texas College graduates and twins Rebekah and Robert Torres Jr. crossed the commencement stage on May 8 carrying more than their diplomas. They carried the memory of their late father, longtime McAllen firefighter Robert Torres, whose legacy remained present throughout the emotional celebration.

Surrounded by family, friends and firefighters from the McAllen Fire Department, the twins said earning their degrees was a moment years in the making and one they wished their father could have witnessed in person.

“It was a long time coming, a lot of late nights studying hard,” said Rebekah. “I’m excited. It’s bittersweet knowing that my dad isn’t here, but I know the fire department is here so support my brother and I, and we’re just so grateful.”

“Robert Torres Sr., affectionately known as “Bob T.” by fellow firefighters, served the McAllen community for 25 years after graduating from Class No.18 in 1986. He died in 2012 at the age of 48 after battling cancer, leaving behind his wife and young children including the twins, who were only 3-years-old at the time.

More than a decade later, the siblings said they have worked hard to honor the example their father left behind.

As the twins celebrated together, they said their father’s memory continues to inspire them every step of the way.

“I feel good. I know if he was here, he’d be very proud of us,” said his son Robert. “It just feels good to have all of his firefighting team and all of their support for us. We couldn’t be more thankful.”

Both graduates earned associate degrees in Interdisciplinary Studies from STC and plan to continue their education. Robert said he will attend the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley to study Kinesiology, while Rebekah plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin to major in Education.

For McAllen Fire Chief Juan Gloria, attending the ceremony alongside members of the department was a reminder that the fire service is built on family and brotherhood.

Gloria described Torres as an honorable firefighter who faithfully served the community and remained deeply committed to his family.

“We wanted to make sure that as their extended family, we were there for them,” Gloria said. “We want his kids to know that their father is definitely here in spirit, always. Their dad’s legacy and his life is still present with us here today.”
