I want a life that’s creative and exciting. I know it’s a big dream, but STC is my first step.

Oscar Alfredo Fonseca , 27, is currently working toward his associate degree in Drama at South Texas College after recently switching majors from Graphic Design. He said this change came from reflecting and realizing what he truly wanted to do with his life.

“Acting has always been something I’ve loved,” Fonseca said. “My friends and I would film little scenes or make funny videos for fun. It just stuck with me.”

Before returning to college, Fonseca spent three years in the U.S. military and was even stationed in Japan. Once he came home, he gave graphic design a try, but eventually decided to chase what really called out to him - theater and storytelling.

“I’ve always looked up to people like actors Leonardo DiCaprio, Johnny Depp and Jim Carrey,” he said. “I know it’s a big dream, but this is my first step.”

Fonseca , with his recent program change, is set to start classes within Drama next semester. He said he is excited to jump into the program and grow as a performer.

Besides being a student, Fonseca is also involved on campus. He’s a Student Ambassador and has even had the chance to be Jerry the Jaguar, STC’s mascot.

“That was one of the best experiences I’ve had. It’s fun and makes me feel more connected to campus,” he said.

Fonseca said STC has helped him grow as a student and a person.

“I was just going through the motions—working, going home, repeat,” he said. “Now I’m learning, meeting new people and getting involved. I look forward to coming to school.”

He has three older brothers and one younger sister, most of which have also attended STC. In fact, one of his brothers is currently attending college with him.

Fonseca is on track to be the first in his family to graduate from STC. As for what motivates him, Fonseca said it’s about proving to himself what he’s capable of doing.

“I want a life that’s creative and exciting,” he said. “The biggest thing in my way is me, and I’m working on that every day.”

His dream is to one day act alongside some of his biggest inspirations, but for now, he’s proud to be at STC taking his first step toward that goal.
