Determination against all odds

Student of the Week: Elizabeth Medrano Soto

It's not easy, but having the advisors guide me toward the correct path has made a big difference. Thankfully, I’ve also had awesome instructors that have kept me motivated to push forward.

STC Student of the Week Elizabeth Medrano Soto

Elizabeth Medrano Soto, a 23-year-old student at South Texas College, is on a mission to secure her spot in the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program. Navigating the challenges of college life, her dedication and love for the field shine brightly.

Reflecting on her childhood, Soto shared, "Growing up, I had lots of sonography appointments due to health concerns, and each time, my curiosity grew. Now, I can predict what they'll say during a scan because I am studying the field to understand myself better."

As a first-generation college student, Soto faces challenges, but she's thankful for STC for helping her every step of the way.

She adds, "It's not easy, but having the advisors guide me toward the correct path has made a big difference,” she said. "Thankfully, I’ve also had awesome instructors that have kept me motivated to push forward.”

Now, faced with the rigorous requirements of the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program, Soto is putting in the work to finish her classes and apply. Despite encountering some challenges with previous grades, she is determined to get better grades and ensure a successful admission to the program.

"This year, something I did differently that has been helping me is time management. I make sure to do my assignments before they're due, so I won't be stressed,” said Soto. “And of course, the most important thing is keeping track of assignment due dates so you can guarantee yourself a successful outcome."

Since she was young, Soto has faced dyslexia, but that has never stopped her. Every time she passes a class, she conquers dyslexia and becomes a symbol of determination.

"I'm here to prove people wrong. If you try hard anything is possible,” she said. “I'm here, and I'm going to get into this program, even if I have dyslexia."

Soto’s journey isn't just about overcoming challenges, but it's a testament to her grit, showing that nothing can stand in her way of reaching her goal of getting into STC’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography program.

STC’s sonography programs provides educational and clinical experience that result in extensive knowledge in ultrasound physics and instrumentation, use of Doppler imaging and cross-sectional anatomy and pathophysiology in the abdomen, pelvis, obstetrics, gynecology and superficial structures.
