STC Student of the Week Annabel Renner

Annabel Renner, a 22-year-old McAllen native with a passion for education aspires to become a high school English teacher and South Texas College is helping her get her start.

“I have always had a strong connection with my English teachers growing up. I also loved reading. I knew I wanted to teach since a young age, and I am excited to see what the future holds,” said Renner.

Choosing STC was a no brainer for Renner. Her mom, Melissa A. Renner, also works for the college as a project manager for the college’s Research & Effectiveness department.

“My mom helped me through the whole enrollment process, I don’t what I would have done without her,” she said.

Educational roots run deep in the Renner family, creating motivation for her own academic journey.

“Both my parents went back to school later in life,” she said. “My younger brother also attends STC, and my younger sister is currently enrolled in dual credit classes at her high school.”

With her family’s dedication to education, Renner is inspired to contribute to the world of teaching and expects to graduate with an Associate of Arts Degree in Teaching.

Renner embraces a busy schedule as a full-time student balancing four classes this semester and working at the Educational Technology Department as a work study employee.

As a work study she said she plays a part in organizing technology for student activity events, making connections with fellow peers and recognizing the value of surrounding herself with goal-oriented students.

Renner added she finds inspiration in this environment, shaping her approach to both work and studies.

“Having the opportunities, I do at STC motivates me to keep going, even if I’m having a bad day,” said Renner. “Having friends who work for the college and enjoy learning like I do, hypes me up and helps me get back on track. I have found my encouragement system.”

With graduation around the corner in December. Renner is eagerly anticipating the next chapter in her journey.

“The future holds a certain excitement and I remain open to all possibilities. Education can lead to so many exciting paths,” she said.
