Learning today, inspiring tomorrow
Student of the Week: Darzy Torres
When I came to register for classes, I noticed how kind and connected the community was. It felt like a place where people genuinely want to see you succeed.
For Darzy Torres, 19, teaching is about making a lasting difference in the lives of others.
Torres is entering her second year at South Texas College (STC), where she is pursuing an Associate of Arts in Teaching while working as a student employee in the Valley Promise recruiting office.
Torres said she chose STC because of the opportunity offered through Valley Promise and the welcoming campus environment.
“I chose STC because of Valley Promise, which offers students, like me, an affordable path to higher education,” she said. “When I came to register for classes, I noticed how kind and connected the community was. It felt like a place where people genuinely want to see you succeed.”
Inspired by faculty members who made a positive impact on her own life, Torres hopes to provide that same encouragement to future students.
“I've always enjoyed working with children and helping others learn,” she said. “I want to become the kind of teacher who makes students feel supported, encouraged and excited to learn.”
One of her favorite college experiences has been working at STC, where she has gained confidence while developing professional skills.
“Working at STC has helped me build confidence, meet new people and develop skills that will help me in my future career,” she said.
Balancing work and school have been her biggest challenge, but she says staying organized and focused on her long-term goals has helped her succeed.
“There have been times when managing everything felt overwhelming, but I've learned to stay organized, ask for help when I need it and remind myself of my long-term goals,” she said. “Every challenge has helped me become more resilient.”
Torres hopes to become an elementary school teacher and create a classroom where every child feels welcomed, valued and encouraged to succeed.
“STC has prepared me by giving me both classroom knowledge and real-world experience,” she said. “I've developed communication, teamwork and leadership skills that give me the confidence to continue pursuing my goals.”
As she continues her education, Torres is building the foundation for a career dedicated to inspiring young learners and making a positive impact.
