Stepping stones towards a purposeful future

I aspire to secure a position as a registered occupational therapist specializing in stroke rehabilitation. By pursuing this degree, I will gain more knowledge and the proficiency I need to enter the field.

Student of the Week: Jaquelyn Moya

Jaquelyn Moya, 23, is diving headfirst into South Texas College’s Occupational Therapy Assistant Program.

In her pursuit of becoming a licensed Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA), Moya said she draws strength from a personal tale that stems from her youth.

“When my grandmother had a stroke and required to be placed in a nursing home, I developed a close bond with the nurses during my visits,” she said. “Even as a social and curious child, I unknowingly started forming connections with many of them. Little did I know that these early interactions would shape my future career.”

Even after earning her bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science from Texas State University in 2022, Moya still dreamed of a career in occupational therapy. With a focus always on learning towards therapy, she grew hungry for more. Not afraid to begin again, Moya bravely went back to school.

This decision brought her back to the Rio Grande Valley and to STC.

“I made the decision to enroll at STC after researching their programs and statistics, including graduation rates online,” she explained. “STC’s information was impressive, and I decided to apply to the program. Fortunately, I was accepted on my initial attempt, something that I am very proud of.”

In STC’s Occupational Therapy Assistant program, Moya stands out as she consistently tackles test and quizzes every week.

“I aspire to secure a position as a registered occupational therapist specializing in stroke rehabilitation. By pursuing this degree, I will gain more knowledge and the proficiency I need to enter the field,” said Moya.

She expresses her appreciation for the school’s excellent program and is grateful for the valuable learning experiences it provides.

“This experience is completely different than my previous degree,” she added. “In a program that only accepts a few students a year, building a close relationship with the professors has made the learning journey more manageable.”
