Affinity for math opens new career choices for IS student

Student of the Week: Evelyn Ventura

Harnessing a natural talent for mathematics and statistics, Evelyn Ventura says she looks forward to whatever the future holds thanks to faculty at South Texas College.

Originally from Virginia, Evelyn said she arrived to the Valley in 2018 to live with her grandmother, and decided to attend STC with the hopes of entering a career in business.

Evelyn is currently seeking her Associate of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies from STC, and is considering entering the accounting field. She plans to attend the University of Texas-San Antonio once she graduates in May 2020.

“I was always ahead in high school and received good scores in all my exams,” Evelyn said. “Most of my teachers were really nice when it came down to it. I would stay after school to receive help and get ahead. They would encourage that in order to do better in my classes.”

The Associate of Arts Degree field of study in Interdisciplinary Studies provides students with a broad-based education in "college basics" that promotes critical thinking skills and allows for an opportunity to make an informed choice in educational preferences.

“I have really enjoyed my time at STC. The classes are small, and I appreciate the one-on-one time with my professors here. To students, I would tell them to keep pushing forward and don’t let anyone try to stop you.”

The program offers transferable field of study selections in arts and humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, computer applications, and mathematics. This field of study is an excellent transfer program that can be used towards the successful completion of a Baccalaureate Degree in any field.
