Building a foundation for a career in law enforcement
Student of the Week: Weldon Smith
Anyone can do it, just as long as you believe in yourself.
For Weldon Smith, finding the right career path took some exploring. Currently pursuing an associate degree in interdisciplinary studies at South Texas College (STC), Smith originally started as a Kinesiology major before developing an interest in Criminal Justice through career fairs and college courses.
"I heard good things about it in high school," Smith said about choosing STC.
After learning about the college through a recruiter and visiting campus during a school tour, Smith decided to enroll and found the experience easier than expected, thanks to welcoming staff and helpful resources across campus.
Now, pursuing an associate degree in criminal justice, Smith plans to graduate in spring 2027 and hopes to transfer to the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) or Sam Houston State University to earn a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, with an interest in working for a federal law enforcement agency.
This semester, Smith also joined STC's Criminal Justice Club for the first time, volunteering to gain experience, build a resume and get more involved outside the classroom.
When it comes to studying, Smith said he prefers a quiet space, using flashcards and self-quizzing to prepare for exams.
“Studying at the campus library or a local coffee shop and going for a run after class also helps me maintain a balance between school and personal time,” Smith said.
While there have been moments when continuing school felt difficult, Smith credits his parents for providing encouragement and support along the way throughout his studies at STC.
"They've been really supportive," Smith said. "Even if I would find a class challenging, they'd tell me to retake it and not give up on school."
With graduation getting closer, Smith hopes to continue working toward a career in criminal justice and encourages other students to keep going, even when things become challenging.
"Anyone can do it, just as long as you believe in yourself," he said.
